Wait... no money on your GF's bday, and yet you can afford a laptop to give as a gift?

Something is rotten in the state of Denmark...

Dell has had some smoking deals since their market share has gone into the shitter.

techbargains.com can keep you up on most of these deals.

Otherwise, the dal you found was pretty good. I got an Acer for a friend for only $50 less but I added some memory to it anyway. Check the sites and weekly ads for BestBuy, Circuit City, OfficeMax and Office Depot to make sure.

Try Sam's Club and Walmart.

Walmart has an Acer 1.6 Celeron-40G HD-Combo drive-512 ram- $499

Also check out Fry's and TigerDirect

Tiger has some good deals ... if you can go the ebate route. I will mention though that I have read many people bitch about TD rebate procedures...

They also tend to do alot of buisness w/ refurbished items...

Fry's may be the best bet of all.

W/ a $30 mail in rebate they have a Compaq w/ Sempron 3300+ - 512 ram - Combo DVD/CD - 80G hd for 499.99

Just got a new credit card.

It's love if you ask me.

Not to mention I'm getting her a basic comp, but she doesn't have one, and doesn't expect it, so even if it sets me back some, I think it will be worth it. It is, however, definitely more than I should and wanted to spend.

You'll want at least 512MB memory on it.

If the rebates come back, that is definitely the best one for that price. The main thing is the screen size. Most notebooks at 499 have a 14.0 or 14.1 inch display.

A couple things to keep in mind are (1) Mail-in rebates, (2) After purchase service
Certain places have done away with the complicated mail-in rebates that have plagued computer purchases for so long.

For after-purchase service, I don't know your level of laptop experience (or the person who will be receiving the laptop as a gift), but the problem with places like Wal-Mart is that they are not equipped to handle if your laptop breaks. If something stops working on it, what is Wal-Mart going to do? Certain places have Service Centers, in-home repair and on-site repair options - believe me, that's important!
