Looking at various descriptions on Hoopshype for a defensive backup to Bowen one player's description jumped out.

A defensive role player... Able to play both forward spots... Can guard multiple positions... Brings intensity... Not much talent on the offensive end... His shot lacks consistency... A locker room leader.

Most of the options are only able to play SF/SG, are smaller at 6-5 to 6-7, are poison in the locker room or can't play defense.

Williams has just a 1 year deal, Rightl? I know he has stated he wants to be closer to Home. I.e. NJ, but he might just be happy to stay the whole year for a ring or just a few months to show his stuff and look good if we trade him.

Actually, it's about NOT keeping him at ALL, but using his expiring contract as trade leverage to get pieces we NEED. Where did I say "past this year" anyway? Oh yeah, I DIDN'T.

Eric Williams has very little outright basktetball value to this team. We have the swing spots covered with BB, Manu, Barry, and Finley. There is no point in having a vet just sit there and brood.

Well, maybe Pop has the intention of playing Bonner and Williams earlier in the season with the hope that they play better than people expect and therefore their expiring contracts become more attractive for a trade midseason. I really don't think we should move them unless we can get "value" & "need" out of it. i.e., long 3. I think it is just best to keep them here this season and then just not resign them next year. Who knows, they may prove to be more valuable to us this season? You never know what could happen in a season and I don't think it's a bad thing to have insurance on your bench. Williams, Bonner, and Vaughan are the Spurs "insurance".

Williams will be a nice fi for a season I think. He is long, and from what Ive read a really good defender and a decent rebounder for his size. He is a little long in the tooth, but one more forward with versatility cant hurt.

Eric Williams got 12th man playing time in Jersey and spent most of his time on the Inactive List in Toronto, one of the worst teams in the NBA. I highly doubt he's good for any minutes off the bench no matter what Buford says...remember Pop still runs the team.

The Spurs are trying to get more versatile and younger, and Williams solves neither problem. The last thing we need to do is duplicate talents. We already have two 35 yr old shooters (Barry, Finley) and we've been trying to get rid of Barry for a while. So why would we need two defensive specialists?

Bottom Line: Eric Williams was included in the Rasho deal for salary-matching purposes and he will be IL material until he's dealt to a "seller" at the trade deadline for a young, athletic swingman.

Eric Wiliams can really help us (especialy against Dallas) if he is in good shape and if he is motivated.
BTW, I agree with most of posters : I think that Williams will never wear a Spurs jersey and will be traded or waived.
