View Full Version : Chad Ford Bashes Spurs' Summer League Team

Ford wrote an article breaking down all the teams' summer league play. He had the Spurs in the "bad" section and had this to say:

Spurs: The Spurs are famous for either trading their first-round pick or selecting some obscure international player. Two of the said mystery men showed up in Utah at the Rocky Mountain Revue and there wasn't much to like. Ian Mahinimi looks like he has the raw tools but looks to be years away. By the way Sergei Karaulov played, according to scouts, he might never play in the league.

Not sure who Mahinimi is but if he's talking about Mahinmi, Ford shouldn't have been surprised by his play. Mahinmi is still young and had no experience versus NBA quality competition, so it was expected that he wouldn't do much. And actually, he did a little better than I thought he would.

And Karaulov not playing in the NBA is no shocker. Rarely do last picks in the draft pan out. He wrote that as if it was a surprise that one of the Spurs' draft picks didn't become an All-Star.

Ford needs to stick to hyping up Euros who never amount to anything.

Keep in mind that we're the one's that drafted Manu Ginobili 57th overall. He just expects us to stike gold 100% of the time. :rolleyes

The same Chad Ford who proclaimed Maciej Lampe and Pavel Podkolzine as the best players in their draft classes respectively.

What he wrote isn't that horrible, but he shouldn't have put them in the "Bad" section. (He grouped the teams as Good, Bad or Muddy.)

bit of a misleading "bash" term on your title.

The "bash" is that he listed them in the "Bad" section.

Why didn't he pimp the undrafted guys on our team that played well?

Is he wrong, though?

Mahinmi is years off, and the other kid might not ever play in the league. So we dont' have a great summer-league team. Oh well. *counts rings on fingers*

Last year's was worse. Karaulov wasn't even that good then.

Ding, ding, ding. We have a winner. Our summer league team sucks ass most years. Mr. Ford needs to buy a fucking clue.

SpursWillOwn,

Just a question about your Manu/Ben Wallace picture ...

Did Manu actually score that basket, because it wouldn't be "ownage" if he didn't.

Also, it's pretty clear from the picture that Manu is using his off-arm to clear off Ben Wallace's arm. Also not "ownage."

Should use a better picture, especially if you have Manu actually scoring the bucket.

Oh well, though, Ben's a bull. lol.

Jamstone - I was just thinking the same thing... trying to figure out exactly who was getting "owned" in that pic.

When we selected Karaulov, we could have taken the undrafted Jackie Butler instead.

i think manu scored or miss... ben can't block that same elevation and they're a body width apart

One thing I don't get...

If a guy supports our team, we call him a 'lapdog' for the front office. If a guy criticizes our team well call it 'bashing' the Spurs. That's not directed at Timvp, just a general comment.

I guess it's human nature.

You realize the "lapdog" thread was being facetious, right?

Sorry, but Ian did not play well. He had one good game offensively and showed flashes of his athleticism but Ford was right in his assesment that Ian is years away...like 08-09 season.

Having said all that, the Spurs didn't need to have a great Summer League, because their roster is pretty much set and the real development happens overseas or in the D-League.

Gotta like Melvin Sanders going off though, sad that he didn't get to display that agressiveness and ability much in the season. I hope he's our 15th guy.

You can push off with your "thumb"?

Don't summer leagues inherently suck?

They're filled with guys that couldn't get a contract in the league, and are basically auditioning. It's like porn stars trying to get a gig in Hollywood. Ian has some nice tits, but he needs to develop other aspects of his 'game'.

Don't summer leagues inherently suck?Absolutely. Aside from your own players, you might be able to find one free agent that could make the team. I follow them more closely than most because I have seen alot of the D-League players present.
