Which model, Sequ? It takes us to three choices.

And what do you want/need on it?

The cheap one. What else?

SpursWoman

What are you going to use it for? Just messing around?

SequSpur

Yeah, FSP, some surfing, wordprocessing, a few games, etc. etc... nothing big...

Do the games you play require controllers that would use a parallel/serial port...or are they USB?

I'm guessing they're all USB by now...as well as any printers these days.

If so, I'd go for the middle one. But technically, you should buy the best you can afford...so it's not totally obsolete in 6 months. :)

Actually if it's just for goofing around like he said, he should get the cheapest one. It has enough memory and speed to handle just about anything he would do. There's no need to pay for more than the cheapest one because it's just an extra computer for their household, it's not for his job or their main computer in their house. And there's nothing on it that would become obsolete if he's just using it for those purposes.

Cool, so Dell is a good laptop product?

I want one with a wireless system to go with the system I have in my house already. I will give this computer to my youngest daughter and use the laptop from now on. I think I am going to order one tomorrow.

Doesn't the wireless system work in certain places now? Like Starbucks... etc.

You know, the title of this thread mislead me.

I heard on the radio that lap dances are only $5 at the Wild Zebra on Thursday...Of course, you can probably get an STD just from breathing the same air as those crackhead bitches there...

Get A Mac

Getting a Mac would stink if you already have a PC.

ducks

WHY?

I use a mac and a pc all the time
one is a mac
and my other computer is a pc
I use my mac more
I only use the pc since my quicken bookkeeping can not work on the mac and the pc.
which quicken sucks because of that
but I cross platform all the time
I save excel files in my appleworks and open them and print them out on work's printers all the time.

besides if you want windows on your mac you can install it to

If it works for you so be it. Running Windows on a Mac is a last ditch thing. It is NOT good for regularly working with Windows. Having both is not as handy as having all of one type of hardware/software. This is especially true if he already has a wireless network setup with the other PC.

Cool, so Dell is a good laptop product?Good enough. The thing about notebooks is to have someone around who can work on them, since alot of the stuff isn't user-serviceable. Dell is at least better than most in that regard.

Doesn't the wireless system work in certain places now? Like Starbucks... etc.Yeah, though there and other places you have to pay for the access. Other places like Schlotzsky's have free access. Here's a link that can help you find access points -- free and pay:

RIght now that link shows no laptops, so now it's a good deal ($0) if you're not planning to buy one.

Generally, cheaper laptops will be heavier, bulkier, smaller memory and disk space and screen, older processor and memory technology, CD reader instead of a CD or DVD writer, no wireless, less upgradable. USB and 100mb Ethernet is fairly standard. Be sure you can upgrade the amount of memory to a reasonable size in case what you get is well short of not enough. I would recommend a 3-year warranty as laptops are more fragile. I wouldn't get the extra warranty for dropping it or throwing it around unless you plan to be really hard on it.

Whatever you do, don't buy an IBM Thinkpad.

My husband has had a few Toshibas and has had no problems with them.

Hewlett-Packard is a good brand as well. I have had my HP laptop since 2002 and it works perfectly with my home wireless network.

Still running my eMachines lappy with no problems, but the model I have is more than you need.

The low-to-mid end HPs are good (Compaq, too) and the Toshibas are good, but a little pricey.

I bought a Compaq laptop -- the *cheapest* version when 7 GB was a shitload of memory. A year later I had to run a lot of programs off disks and kept having to uninstall things because of all the new goodies available (ie, my extensive music collection)....paying the extra $100-$200 or so originally would have been cheaper and more convenient than having to go back and upgrade. Adding memory to a laptop is a way bigger PITA than adding to a PC.
