You live in the USA, USA should be your number one team. The USA is about multticulturalism. To be in the USA even you are from an another country and root for a team from another country over the USA is acually a form of racism. I think this really hits home more in soccer than basketball.

Manu's my favorite Spurs player but I've got too much pride in the USA to root against them. I love this country, go USA!

Now, if the USA team fucks up like they did in the 04 Olympics, I think it's free game to root against them. But Colangelo and Coach K probably know what they're doing, plus Bruce Bowen will be there. I'd love to see Bruce put the brakes on Manu in the Championship game, that'd be sweet.

I agree with you. France is filled with black players, but they all speak French. Argentina has Ginobili who was even called Italian at some point in his career...But they all speak Spanish. Slovenia has players who speak Slovenian and Serbo-Croatian and English, but obviously only USA is about multiculturalism. No other country is that advance - melting-pot-wise - as the old USA.

USA is so national/aknowledged that African-Americans judge Latino-Americans while Native Americans steal casino-wise from other Americans, but there was an effort for more than 8 years just to put together an ALL-Stars-American team for a major national tournament. Yes, it is racist not to cheer for a team with such character. (BTW, I really hope USA will be better this year).

At this point, I'm rooting for everyone. (Interesting that this thread topic didn't include France.) For example, if Argentina is playing China at some point, I'll be rooting for Argentina in that game. If France plays Lithuania, I'll be rooting for France. When Argentina plays France in the first game, I'll be rooting for Argentina. (Sorry, Tony.)

The only point where a question like the thread topic should come into play is if the US plays Argentina, France or Slovenia in the elimination rounds. If and when that time comes, I'll be rooting for no injuries to our Spurs boys above all else, but I will be happy with the outcome for whoever of them takes home a medal.

What an ignorant statement. Sports should transcend racial AND national divisions but of course it's completely understandable for one to root for one's own country IF THEY WISH and not because someone wants to lay down a race-based guilt trip. Please explain how rooting for another country is a form of racism. My family is Italian and Mexican so it would make more sense for me from an ethnic standpoint to root for Argentina, a country full of Italians and latinos. However, watching sports is a form of entertainment and I like rooting for the underdog, I'm not going to innject this whole nationalistic fervor or racial connotations to something I love. Your last statement about soccer doesn't make any sense. What are you trying to imply about soccer, a sport embraced by almost every country on earth...something that cannot be said about basketball.

That said, like the World Cup, I'm rooting for several teams, no injuries to all NBA ballers and good basketball. I'll probably favor Germany and if Argentina/USA matchup I'll probably go with Argentina but I just want it to be exciting above all else.

The first time I saw Ginobli play was the world b-ball championships in Indy. Was that 02"? The way the Argentinian team played was a thing of beauty. I found myself rooting for them just because of the way they played the game. Back-cuts, down screens, sharing the ball and playing perfect team basketball. The American team was outclassed and played stupid, one on one and they lost. I don't think it had anything to do with not being patriotic or racist, I just appreciate good sportsmen playing the right way.

This about Americans who root for other countries. If you are from another country then this does not concern you. You should root for your own country first and then every one else second. In this world today sports has an impact on the world stage. Any American who wishes to root for another country to defeat America should simply go live in that country. If you think it does not matter then you have lived a very sheltered and shallow life.

Something tells me this thread is going to end up being transferred to the political forum.

One of the main reasons I love international competitions is that it transcends, most of the time, the hell that is going on in the rest of the world. While there are so many countries that hate America right now for political reasons, they are able to separate American athletes from their government and welcome them with open arms. During a time when so many are at odds, it will be wonderful to see so many countries coming together and exhibiting the kind of humanity and sportsmanship on the court that I so wish could be the standard by which we live.

http://www.clarin.com/diario/2006/07...m-01243249.htm

Can anybody translate what this says? It's about Manu Ginobli.

To everyone else who roots for the country of allegiance, That is what you are suppose to do. Some of you have suggested that sports should not be that important and your right. The problem is the propoganda that occurs make it a bigger issue than it should be. The issue of Hilter and Jessie Owens had huge ramifications to the morale of Germany. The actions of Muhammad Ali was instrumental during the years of the civil rights movement. And yes, even the Spurs helped the NBA to advance in the world market because of our players.

America is struggling with its identity because of how many of you think. You have no allegiance to anything but your selfish selves. Americans need to have a little pride. Be a part of the solution not a part of the problem. Sports and politics should not mix. I agree. The problem is in the real world that is not the case.

When it comes to players competing because of nationality then it is simple. Who do you have allegiance to?

You should root for your own country first and then every one else second. In this world today sports has an impact on the world stage. Any American who wishes to root for another country to defeat America should simply go live in that country. If you think it does not matter then you have lived a very sheltered and shallow life.

I love basketball… plain and simple. FYI, I am supporting my boyfriend's team in the WC, although I have no plans to relocate to his native country. I am thrilled about attending the Group D games in Sapporo City not only to support him, but because I am a fan of the game.

With all the issues going on in the world today, I don't think the WC cheer squad matters at all. Perhaps it’s people such as yourself, that gives way to shallowness with your own pettiness…

Do you know?

Dude... Pepe Sanchez schooled most of college point guards during his time in Temple. John Chainey LOVED him.
He developed as a great pass-first point guard but then his NBA chances were few since his outside shooting is not dependable.
He commands Argentina's NT since the year 2001 and lead them to a WC 2nd place and a Olympic Gold medal.
His defense is great. He will own TP. I tell you what... mark 2 blocks for Pepe Sanchez already. After Argentina-France, we'll see if those were over TP or not.
He doesnt score much but doesn't need to. Imagine the rest of his game for the starting point guard of the WORLD CHAMPION. (We are, if we consider WC and Olympics at the same level)

Yes, he's not becoming any younger.
He's not 22 anymore, and Prigioni is playing great, but i think he's our man.

What about your boy TP and his country?

Pepe Sanchez is a solid PG, but please settle down a little bit. I don't know if he can "own" TP. TP is one fast fucker.

I loved Pepe when he was in Temple, and was happy when he got drafted by the Sixers, but only played 4 minutes a game or so. He basically got garbage time. He finished 2nd all time in steals in the NCAA, would have finished 1st but he missed about 8 games of his senior season to an injured ankle, at least that's what I remember. He came 11 steals short.

It's always interesting when someone calls someone an idiot but the best they can do is come up with four letter words. I am sure you can soliloquize better than that. Oh, by the way here is the correct spelling forl "repetitive".

SANTA FE - Venezuelan star Hector Romero will be out of the 2006 FIBA World Championship after suffering a severe injury to his left elbow in the first game of the Super 4 Tournament against Argentina.

Romero will travel to Caracas and after some evaluations it will be determined if he needs surgery.

He suffered the injury at the start of the game when Manu Ginobili fouled him hard when he tried to penetrate.

After he fell to the floor, he was carried in a stretcher to a local clinic where they inmovilized his elbow.

He will miss at least one month due to injury after suffering a trauma.

Other injured players in the team are Herbert Bayona with a groin injury and Richard Lugo who has problems with his back.

The coaching staff will name a new player for their final trip to Europe prior to the FIBA World Championship.

The funny thing is Pepe had 2 blocks yesterday. Granted, he played opposite Leandrinho Barbosa most of the time.
Ohh.. the fun he's gonna have against TP.
Let's make 3.
3 blocks from Pepe in Argentina - France

Do you have any money or do you need to ask your mother some, loser?

What does me having money have to do with your ridiculous statement of Pepe owning Tony Parker? :lol

I don't even care about Argentina or France but I'm fairly confident that TP can handle Pepe. Makes me laugh just writing "Pepe" :lol

Pepe Sanchez is cool. He was one of my favorites from the 2004 competition.
I also liked Walter Hermann- his story was so touching.

Of course Gino is my favorite. Fabri is cool too though. :)

I was just trying to get you to actually propose a bet that Pepe :lol will own Tony Parker. I'm not sure how you would do that, but I'm fairly confident that you wouldn't be willing to bet as much money as I would & can.

Pepe :lol

I'm from the Philippines. I would be cheering for U.S.A, France, Argentina, Slovenia, playing against other teams BUT I WOULD LIKE THE U.S. BASKETBALL TEAM TO WIN the GOLD.

Go! Go! U.S.
It's time for you to get back to the TOP where you belong!
