SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Spurs announced today that they have signed Francisco Elson. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Elson, a 7-0 center, has spent the past three seasons with the Denver Nuggets. Last year he appeared in 72 games, averaging career-bests in points, 4.9 ppg, rebounds, 4.7 rpg, minutes, 21.9 mpg, and shooting percentage, .532 (151-284). He started in 54 games, averaging 5.6 points and 5.4 rebounds in 24.7 minutes while the Nuggets posted a 32-22 record (12-16 when he didn’t start). Elson posted a career-high 21 points vs. the Los Angeles Lakers on April 6 and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds vs. Atlanta on December 18. For his career, he has appeared in 201 games, including 79 starts, averaging 4.1 points and 3.7 rebounds in 16.9 minutes per game.
Originally selected by Denver with the 41st overall pick in the 1999 NBA Draft, Elson played four seasons in Spain before joining the Nuggets in 2003. During the 2002-03 season he played for CSF Sevilla, averaging 9.7 points and 8.2 rebounds. From 1999-2001 Elson played for FC Barcelona before joining Valencia Basket for the 2001-02 season.
A native of the Netherlands, Elson played two seasons of college basketball at Kilgore (TX) Junior College before completing his collegiate career at California. In two seasons with the Bears he averaged 5.4 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.8 blocks in 59 games. As a senior he helped lead Cal to the NIT Championship.

Did you know that the Netherlands is often referred to by the name Holland? This is, however, misguided, since the provinces of North and South Holland in the western Netherlands are only two of the country's twelve provinces
Now see, who said this thread wasn't interesting? :smokin

Rasho put up better stats in Europe. Sean Marks put up better numbers when both were at Cal.

And the Spurs don't play in Europe and Randolph Childress put up better stats than Duncan when both were at Wake. I'm not saying he's going to be great, but given the track record at the position, it won't take much for him to at least keep the status quo.

That's my main beef with getting Elson.
I wanted the Spurs to improve at the center spot.

Me too, but for the exact same money Elson and Butler are statistically an improvement from Rasho and Nazr. For a third or a quarter of the price, they at very least bring the talent to dollar ratio back where it belongs and allow the team to improve at other positions. With the upside both possess, Elson to a lesser degree, they could become a giant improvement at the position.
Considering the long-accepted belief that if you could get the same production Robinson gave the center position in 2003 in order to be successful, that's not a reach, especially if either or both actually are allowed to see minutes in the playoffs, which will be a bigger factor in the team's success IMO.
I definitely understand the apprehension, but I gave Sidney Green more chances than some of you are giving to a dude that hasn't even gotten a team jersey yet.

This is still possible, Elson + Butler could be better than Rasho+Nazr possibly.

Is Butler or Elson going to have a "press conference" in which they're given a jersey?

This is still possible, Elson + Butler could be better than Rasho+Nazr possibly. At least we hope so. Elson at least has the height to alter some shots. Even if we dont get much offensive production from him, I hope he can at least play some D.

My #1 reason for liking him, admittedly not that great, but I'm irritated how finesse the Spurs can be on defense.

That's what drove me nuts about Nazr/Rasho. Admittedly, it's not just those two that have that problem. But damn...you're gonna get called for a foul in that situation 99% time anyway...so why not just lay the wood to them.

I don't think Elson will be any kind of enforcer/hard fouler that people here think he'll be.
He fouls less than Rasho, isn't known as an enforcer, and is basically a guy who can run the floor really well and knock down some jumpshots.
People shouldn't expect much more.
Mr. Body
08-02-2006, 04:38 PM
I don't think he'll be a Charles Oakley enforcer, but he has 'enforced' in the past, i.e. closed off the lane in a bruising way. It's not his M.O. but it's far better than the Gentle Souled Rasho could ever offer.

He might have delivered a hard foul in his NBA career before -- so yes, that's more often than Rasho. But it's definitely not his MO like so many people think it is.
People keep using "enforcer" and "banger" when referencing Elson and it makes me wonder if they have him confused with someone else.
He's a skinny 7 footer who doesn't enforce or bang very often. He has a decent jumpshot and he'll be able to run the break.

Poor Rasho just didn't have it in him. If this guy lays one person out in the lane it will be an upgrade in terms of enforcement of the lane. Nazr looked half asleep at times and hardly touched anyone.

Oh, okay. I don't mean that, either. I mean more, when he wraps someone up who's driving the lane, he'll just as soon let him hit the ground than anything. Pull him down (legally) and make him think about driving again. That can be frustrating to players -- and I'm especially thinking of the lilting daisies of Dallas.

Agreed....I have liked Elson for sometime. I believe the entire Denver coaching staff wasted a valuable opportunity. I would take Elson over Evans anyday. Just wait and see.....Our guys will turn this guy into a beast.....It just never materalized with Rasho or Nazi.....The phsycological aspect of the game.....David even had trouble with this until later in his career.....He is physically and mentally tough....That's the word I was looking for.....He is somewhat reminicient of David.....The later part of his career of course.....Good pickup.

People keep saying they wish that the Spurs would have upgraded at the center position, but realistically, what center was available that we could have afforded?
I'm not saying that Elson or Butler are going to be the saviours of the team, but for the price & the amount of years that we got them for, I really dont think the signings were all that bad...
If anything, their signings give us some flexibility in the future to make moves that will have more impact..these signings are more of a stop gap than anything..we get a look at Butler on the cheap & if he works out, then it will probably make these two signings all worth it.

None of it makes sense. The Germans call their country Deutschland and themselves Deutsch while I think the Dutch call themselves Nederlands.
Nether- meaning 'low'; Netherlands meaning "the low countries", i.e. basically sea level.
