I'm thinking about buying a cheap telescope. Anyone here own one? I used to have one as a kid and I want one to take out into the country and look at all the standard stuff.

I have a couple, the Discovery store at NorthStar mall has a couple of good economical scopes you may be interested in. Go with the refraction type, cheaper than the other ones and good starter scope. Then if you get into it you can upgrade and selling yours will be a snap. Definatly do a bit of research, spend at least $200 or you will be disappointed with a kids scope if you dont, and dont get one from Radio Shack, toys r us or even walmart. Whole Earth Prov. at the Quarry has some nice starter scopes and so does Sharper Image. Also a good tripod will be essential to steady viewing.

I got a Galileo brand scope. About 125. Works pretty well.

http://meade.telescopes.com/products/meade-etx-80at-tc-astro-telescope-with-autostar-42229.html this is a good one. They make a step down for just under 200 buck but seriously anything less is pure shit. I've had telescopes from 100 bucks to 1k and once you get below 200 its all junk.At the moment, I'm seriously considering purchasing this one:

Manny, that is a great scope for the price. I bought the exact model for my godson and he loves it. He still hasn't figured out how to set it up with the computer but is learning and hopefully will keep him interested in astronomy. Me i'm just a weather geek and it is awesome to view distant storms or even see close-ups of lightning. i would definatly recomend that scope if ur seriouse about getting one, i paid over $300 for his.

Whenever I buy anything, I try to read up on peoples opinions of it. I don't like buying something and then finding out that there were long lists of problems with the item I could have found out about with some research.

That scope is giving me fits, because it seems like it is love/hate. People on some forums either love it, or they say it gives them a ton of problems. I don't know but it is a good price for the size and features it has so I'm thinking about taking a shot at it.

They are also selling 4.5 Inch tubes by themselves. I considred getting one because they are only 50 bucks and if I got a mount and tripod I'd be good to go and I could get a better one than they usually come with and still save a good deal of money.

Yes.....I do own a telescope.
It is an Edmond Scientific.....resembles a bazooka :lol
It is approx. 30 yrs old.
It is an f/10 4 1/2" reflector.
It has a heavy-duty tripod....unfortunaltely the clock drive doesn't work....the instructions I recieved with were one page.....have was in some other language (not sure whoch one)
I have a few lenses and the 2x barlow.

I haven't used it in agor so it seems.

The problem I have is is nearly as a long as my car is wide (Hyundai Accent)and it is impractical to really take anywhere.
And there are just too many lights where I live for it to be effective or enjoyable.
This is a stock photo....mine is similar only red in color.

I went ahead and purchased this:

http://i12.ebayimg.com/01/i/05/e7/88/68_3.JPG

Got it for 188 with free shipping. It wasn't refurbished but brand new in the box and it was the very last one the outlet had. It is the DS-2090AT-TC. It is a 90mm refractor so it should be very portable as well as have a decent appature. I decided against the larger reflectors for now, but if I get into it I can always buy a 8 or 10 inch Dob to have as well and use this one for planets and such.
