Record gas prices seen after Alaska shutdown
Expect to pay three to five cents more at the pump as 8 percent of nation's production goes offline.
August 7 2006: 10:46 AM EDT

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Gasoline prices could break all-time highs in the wake of the Alaska oil field closure, one analyst said Monday.

With a national average of $3.036 for a gallon of regular, prices are already within easy reach of the all-time record high of $3.057 set last September in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, according to the motorist group AAA.

"Prices are likely to rise three cents to five cents a gallon for the next few days," said Tom Kloza, an oil analyst at the research group Oil Price Information Service.

But Kloza said the runup in price is more psychological than anything else, as the amount being taken offline isn't that much and gas prices are more impacted by Mideast violence or tropical storms in the Gulf of Mexico, home to much of the nation's refining.

"We're talking about 400,000 barrels a day," he said "This is not the straw that broke the camel's back."

Kloza said to expect high prices until about mid September, then a fairly sharp decline as demand for gasoline drops at the end of the so-called summer driving season.

BP said Monday it was forced to shut off about 8 percent of the nation's oil supply after discovering "unexpectedly severe corrosion" in its pipelines in Alaska's Prudhoe Bay.

WOW $3.25? I've been paying anywhere from 2.89 to 3.03 ... although I did see a 3.19 out there a few days ago. (interestingly it was a BP station, and the Shell across the street was only 3.04)

The cheapest stuff in Houston has been bouncing around the 2.85-2.95 mark for most of the summer. Can we tell the middle east to keep the oil and just start sending us camels?

Problem here is, if you ride your bike to work in this 400-degree-no-rain-having summer, you're likely to die. :drunk

I didn't drive for a year and a half in California. It was awesome. Here I'd need a shower at work, and there just aren't many of those places around.

There is a reason why, prior to automobiles and air conditioning, Texas had a whole bunch of Comanches and only a few white people.

the worst thing about this gas shit, is that these oil companies are reapin in big profits yet we always hear about them talkin about new ways developin alternative fuels, yet they are not doin enough about it. Not every country has the capacity to accept and implement change with new technology....

in australia melbourne is chargin au$1.40 per litre and it kept on rising to nearly 1.45 in certain areas in australia.

the government gets 30-40cents for every litre sold at the pump fuel excise tax, and then they also get another 10% for good services tax....there was talk about fuel goin down to 1.15 which is probaly bs, since its all about supply and demand, and this has pushed up inflation rate and increasin the interest rate to stop spending....:(:(

anyway election is comin up and all i hear is politicians talkin about petrol price, interest rate........had they made the price for a daily fare to travel on public transport cheaper and improve sevices, then alot of ppl will be using the transport services, instead of drivin there cars. think about it a daily full fare ticket is nearly 4-6bucks, aka thats about 4litres of petrol = you can drive the distance of 40-60kms dependin on engine size and the driver.

anyway nothing to brag about, i usually walk or freeload :D

what is dumb is it is going to take 6 months for it to actually effect it
because it takes about that long for the oil they get today to be ready to be pumped in your automobile to drive

I'm pretty sure I paid the USD/gallon equivalent of $7 the last time I filled up.

But then, I don't drive very much. Airline fuel costs worry me more than autos.

last week the gas was $2.89 this week $3.05.Unless someone changed the prices while I wasn't looking this afternoon gas still isn't $3.05 in SA. There may be the occasional independent dealer or someone charging that for premium but overall the rates were still around $2.90 this morning on the north side.

Are you kidding me????

Is it higher in the suburbs, in Montgomery county????

Not to sound like an asshole, but Montgomery county is statistically the most expensive county in Pennsylvania.

Maybe the gas is more expensive here, I can guarantee that gas has been over 3 bucks for at least a year.

Gas prices are about $3.20-$3.60 in Los Angeles. Gas was as high as $4.00 last summer. I suppose the oil companies can exploit us as they wish.

airline fuel is usually bought in advance, where the prices are locked...and when you hear them talkin about rising ticket prices, it is bs.
