Zach Randolph: Building Around Randolph

Update: Blazers coach Nate McMillan said the organization chose to build around Randolph instead of Sebastian Telfair, leading to the decision to trade Telfair to Boston, the Boston Globe reports.

Recommendation: "Sebastian is a Ferrari and Zach is an 18-wheeler," McMillan said. "And that Ferrari is running while the 18-wheeler is saying, `Hold up.' Even though they were two young guys and the core of our group, it really wasn't working. We had to make a decision: build around Sebastian or build around Zach. And the decision was to build around Zach." We're still not sold that Portland is looking to Randolph to lead the team. In addition to his exorbitant contract, Randolph's character issues and bouts with insubordination make him near untradeable.

Who are the Blazers fooling?

Randolph's big contract makes him difficult to move. Telfair just wasn't showing any progress in being the guy the Blazers wanted to build around while Randolph has put up decent numbers despite an attitude that leaves a lot to be desired.

I think the correct answer will ultimately be the Blazers will build their team around Brandon Roy. He looks to be an impact type player that Randolph isn't.

If Portland is going to build around Randolph they should of just stuck with Sheed. At least Rasheed almost got them past the Lakers.

Telfair never had microfracture surgery. Bad choice by Portland, if it was a choice and not forced by lack of ability to move Randolph.

to be fair, it would be hard to build around a guy who couldn't win the starting job from steve blake.
