Hidayet Turkoglu named Most Valuable Player of NBA 2003-2004 season
CihanNews: 10/22/2004

ISTANBUL (CIHAN) - Turkish star player Hidayet Türkoglu was named as the MVP (most valuable player) of the NBA 2003-2004 season, in a recent survey carried out by expert Jeff Sagarin and professor Wayne Winston.

Hedo Turkoglu, who played for San Antonio Spur last season, ranked first, outshining all other NBA stars, to become MVP for the season, showed the survey carried out by Wayne L. Winston, a professor of decision sciences at Indiana University and his friend Jeff Sagarin, a professional sports statistician.

Sagarin and Winston have formulated a ranking that is similar to hockey's plus-minus system, in which players receive credits for being in the game when their team does well. Whether they actually score points or grab rebounds does not matter.

Hidayet was followed by Toronto Raptors' Vince Carter, by Minnesota Timberwolves' Kevin Garnett, by Sacramento Kings' Brad Miller and his old teammate Emanuel Ginobili.

Hidayet will play for Orlando Magic this season.

So, what the hell? According to Sagarin, Hedo was the best player in the league last year?

I can sort of believe it, if the stats were for the regular season only.

Above is a link talking about the the formula.

It sounds like an overall ranking of players by each category. I'm sure it's flawed but it makes some sense.

But don't get me wrong, Turkoglu sucks.

Why the to-do over Turkoglu?

Well, in the ratings system developed by Jeff Sagarin and Wayne Winston, a player's value to his team is measured by more than mere points. Factored in are stuff such as chasing loose balls, taking charges and playing off-ball defense, intangibles overlooked by most traditional stats.

Their 2003-04 rankings: 1. Turkoglu :wtf :lol 2. Vince Carter. 3. Garnett. 4. Brad Miller. 5. Manu Ginobili.

The system considers a lot of curious things, but there must be more too it. Hedo's ascendant value suggests that, along with chasing loose balls and playing off-the-ball defense, this system ensures that missed layups and the incalculable shrivel factor both play a huge part in the analysis.

And while its funny that Hedo is most valuable, it's even funnier to me that Vince Carter finished second. I mean, I wonder if the Sagarin system adds in a metric for bitching and moaning about being well defended and acting like a punk ass bitch when you get shut down? (no, that can't be it, because Ray Allen would have been more valuable than a stalwart like Hedo).

Perhaps the writers had stopped here whilst pondering the MVP...

Let me see a show of hands from the posters that finally jumped on the AntiHedo Sequ train after the season?

Come on, admit it, I was right. I told you that we would be a failure. Raise your hands and admit it and step into the light.

This formula is also known as the "taruky score".

Actually, Hedo was doing fine until he lost his shot vs. the Lakers, so statisically, over the season I can see how this could happen. Also, Hedo (I'm guessing here) was usually in the same time as TD, which would help explain why the Spurs did so well with him in there. Manu was often out there w/o TD to create by himself, so for Manu to be #5 is quite impressive.

I remember Bong Recreational Area; it's in southern Wisconsin, near Lake Geneva. Spent a weekend there once - camping, drinking, watching hang-gliders, and .... other stuff.

What happened inside the tent on the grassy knoll stays inside the tent on the grassy knoll!

Hedo #1, Vince #2?

They need to take away Sagarin's keyboard.
