On birth pangs..

What we're seeing here, in a sense, is the growing -- the birth pangs of a new Middle East and whatever we do we have to be certain that we're pushing forward to the new Middle East not going back to the old one.

Condi Rice on July 21, 2006, during a Q&A session of her Special Briefing on Travel to the Middle East and Europe

6 You will hear of wars and rumours of wars; see that you are not alarmed, for this is something that must happen, but the end will not be yet. 7 For nation will fight against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8 All this is only the beginning of the birthpangs.

Are you a man or sheep?

Colorado Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob Beauprez probably has a headache right about now. He picks Mesa County Commissioner Janet Rowland to run with him as the lieutenant governor candidate, and then an interview she did earlier this year on Rocky Mountain PBS’s “Colorado State of Mind” surfaces, with her interesting comments about gays and marriage (Denver Post):

The host asked whether polls showing support for domestic partnership and a ban on gay marriage were “irreconcilable.”

Rowland began her answer by noting that she has gay friends and respect for gays. (Uh, oh.. you know what's coming..)

“But I believe marriage is between a man and a woman. Homosexuality is an alternative lifestyle,” she said. “That doesn’t make it a marriage. Some people have group sex,” she said. “Should we allow two men and three women to marry? Should we allow polygamy with one man and five wives? For some people, the alternative lifestyle is bestiality. Do we allow a man to marry a sheep?

“I mean at some point you have to draw the line,” she said.

Man accused of telling airport security penis pump was a bomb
ASSOCIATED PRESS

CHICAGO (AP) -- Cook County prosecutors say a 29-year-old man traveling with his mother desperately didn't want her to know he'd packed a sexual aid for their trip to Turkey.

So he told security it was a bomb, officials said.

Madin Azad Amin was stopped by officials on Aug. 16 after guards found an object in his baggage that resembled a grenade, prosecutors said.

When officers asked him to identify it, Amin said it was a bomb, said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Lorraine Scaduto.

...

He's been charged with felony disorderly conduct, said Andrew Conklin, a spokesman with the Cook County state's attorney's office.

Amin faces up to three years in prison if convicted.

Ironically, or not, high oil prices have been good to the ruskies too..

Russia's red-era debt put to rest
Correspondents in London and Moscow
August 23, 2006

RUSSIA has wiped out its Soviet-era debts with a repayment of $US23.7 billion ($31.1 billion) that symbolises the country's transformation from economic basket case to powerhouse. The dramatic display of Russia's new-found economic clout comes just eight years after it defaulted on more than $US40 billion in debt.

...

The move knocked about a third off the country's foreign debts, which previously stood at $US70 billion. Russia had been due to pay off the debts by 2020, but the sharp rise in the price of oil has engineered a dramatic improvement in the country's fortunes. That enabled it to bring the repayment forward, at an estimated saving of $US12 billion.

...

In July, Mr Putin said: "We used to live with our hand held out for many years ... but now the Russian economy cannot only repay debts, but do so ahead of time." The Finance Ministry said the repayment would reduce Russia's foreign debts as a share of GDP to just 9 per cent.

...

Christopher Green, senior economist at the Moscow Narodny Bank in London, said the move had political implications, as well as making economic sense. "It reflects the emergence of Russia as an economy on to the global stage," he said.

US commander says militias hard to spot in Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Aug 23 (Reuters) - Militias blamed for much of the sectarian violence that has pitched Iraq towards civil war may have melted back into the population to escape a major security crackdown, a U.S. military commander acknowledged on Wednesday.

"The militias are within the people. They blend in with the people. It is very difficult to identify them when they lay down their arms," Colonel Michael Shields told reporters in Baghdad.

He was responding to questions about the relatively low number of arrests and weapons seized during a two-week-old operation to stem a surge in violence between majority Shi'ites and minority Sunnis that has killed thousands in recent months.

The possibility that the operation, which has focused on the most volatile districts of Baghdad, had simply displaced death squads to other areas was also "a concern", he said.

I don't think his statement indicates ignorance of the concepts but an explanation of them.
