All Things Considered, May 26, 2006 · The war between teens and authority figures has a new -- or old -- front: ears. British shopkeepers tired of teenage loiterers have turned to the Mosquito teen repellent, which emits a high-pitch frequency that most teenagers can hear -- but not most adults.

But now teens have struck back against the Mosquito: They are using the same sound to communicate without adults' knowledge.

At issue is a text-message ringtone that emits the same pitch as the Mosquito. Using it, students can learn about a new message while they're in class -- where they're not supposed to be using their cellphones. Most of their teachers can't hear the alert.

Inventor Howard Stapleton, creator of the Mosquito teen repellent, says only a few people over age 30 can hear the Mosquito's sound. He and his 16-year-old daughter Isabel talk to Melissa Block about the sound, which has been dubbed "Teen Buzz."
Can you hear it?

My parents, both in their mid-late forties both heard it....

I guess they retained their hearing sensibility (avoiding the usual suspects: loud concerts, heavy music, and airports :lol )

I've heard about that ringtone, no pun intended. And I can hear it, but I should since I'm only 28.

That's not it, it's far too easy to hear...It should be 17Khz, but it's possible that the compression used has changed it...

Try this one:

I can hear them, too, and I'm older than all of you put together.

But then, I can often tell there's a TV in the house, even if it's on mute.

Heard them all. I can also hear mute TVs. Family heard it.
Pets didn't seem to mind any of them cranked up all the way, it's ear-piercing to me though.

I only heard the second one, with the volume cranked up, and even then just barely.

You know, a lot of people have told me they think I'm deaf. This just proves it.

I CAN'T HEAR THEM !!!!!:flipoff My daughter assures me that they are coming across just fine. I have some hearing loss. On the very first link I heard a really low tone but my daughter said there is also a really high pitched frequency that I can't hear. On the other links I don't hear a single friggin noise, even with the volume jacked all the way up. Getting older totally sucks.

Okay, I don't get it.

So the phone rings but only the kids can hear it.

I would think the adults would be clued in when the kid picks up the phone and starts talking into it.

Now if only someone can invent a sound or something that repells morons/idiots... that way Kori could loop it on Spurstalk.com and we could get rid of all the Mavericks fans and Norcal :angel

no, it would be probably be used for text messaging.

Exactly! That way they can text each other back in forth during class and the teachers don't know it. Or when you're in the car yelling at your kid in the back seat they are actually texting back and forth with their friends instead getting an earful from you.:lol

Just put the phone on silent/vibrate...Sure that (vibrate) might be fun for me, but the teens are all about the risk. If there's not a chance to do something stupid and get caught, then why do it????
