PORTLAND, Ore. -- Forward LaMarcus Aldridge, the second overall pick in the NBA draft, will undergo surgery to repair a small ligament tear in his right shoulder, the Portland Trail Blazers said Tuesday.

The surgery will be performed Wednesday by Dr. Neal Elattrache in Los Angeles, the team said.

Aldridge is expected to miss the next six-to-eight weeks of action. Such a timetable would have him missing the start of training camp which begins the first week of October. His recovery time will be determined following the surgery.

Aldridge, 21, averaged nearly 12 points and seven rebounds for the Trail Blazers' team in the Las Vegas Summer League in July but complained of shoulder pain upon resuming workouts in Dallas afterward.

On draft night, the Trail Blazers acquired Aldridge, who played at the University of Texas, and a future second-round draft pick from the Chicago Bulls for forward Viktor Khryapa and the draft rights to Tyrus Thomas, who was fourth overall.

The 6-11, 240-pound Aldridge left Texas after his sophomore season, in which he averaged 15.0 points, 9.2 rebounds and 2.0 blocks.

The biggest problem for him is not missing the first few days of training camp, its missing a weightlifting and conditioning program for the next few weeks. The kid really needs to put on weight this offseason and this isn't going to help. He is going to get eaten alive in the post this year.
