The cuts dig deep
Rob Petitti started 16 games last year at right tackle as a rookie, playing every offensive snap, but the Cowboys waived Petitti Saturday, leaving Jason Fabini as the backup offensive tackle.

The other surprise move was the cutting of linebacker Rocky Boiman, who received a $1 million signing bonus. Boiman was impressive in training camp practices and came back quicky from a compound fracture to his right thumb.

Petitti shocked by decision
I just hung up the phone with Rob Petitti, who was released by the Cowboys a few hours ago. The club attempted to work out a trade before making the move.
Scouting chief Jeff Ireland broke the news to Petitti after he lifted weights and ran with the team this morning.

"It's as big a shock to me as anybody," Petitti said. "I can't tell you why it happened. ... I'm mad, but I guess it's the business. I played a lot better in training camp than I did last year, but that's decision."

Here's a little a tip for the future: When Bill Parcells starts bragging about a player's off-season, go ahead and cross him off your list. Petitti joins a list of off-season wonders, which includes Daleroy "The Professor" Stewart and Stephen Peterman.

One more mild surprise on the cut list: [B]Terrance Copper was a valuable special teams player last season. Apparently, Parcells thought rookie Sam Hurd and Miles Austin had too much upside to risk sending them through waivers. We're still trying to get clarification on how much playing time it takes to make a player ineligible for the practice squad

I never even saw Miles Austin, did he even play? I don't think he ever played WR in the pre-season. Did he play on Special Teams?

Yeah, Miles Austin played pretty well at WR. He caught a nice out-and-up from Romo for a touchdown in the New Orleans game.

Ahhh, I didn't get to see that game. I had to work when they played the Saints. I guess that would be why I never saw him.

I just looked at the stats through the 4 pre-season games. Austin has 1 catch 48 yrds 1 td in all of the games.

I don't know but I suspect that if Vanderjagt had done better on his kickoffs and FGs, Shawn Suisham would have been cut and Skyler Green might have hung on. The Cowboys may have to go to Suisham for everything if Mike doesn't get his head straight. The Cowboys basically had to waste a special teams slot to protect themselves.

Austin, had made alot of improvement from the mini camps on and the staff liked his speed and size on coverage and return units. They think he has a real chance at receiver and they like the fact that he works hard blocking in the running game. Copper was a willing worker and I was shocked that he was on the list of cuts but you can't second guess Hurd or Rector. Austin or Copper? I liked Copper but they see something according to Ireland and Haley in Austin.

Well said. He was drafted primarily for kick returns and did not do well. His decision making was horrible.

the 49ers punter screwed him over. he caught a ball at the 9, getting parcells angry, then let two others go, but they both took good bounces and were inside the five.

Pile and Copper deserved to be on the team but Greene was history after he fumbled vs. Vikings.

I was surprised Copper was cut over Miles. I thought Junior Glymph played pretty well and I was glad to see Abram Elam make it.

I guess Fabini really impressed Parcells during the later part of camp and during the P.S. games, because at the beginning of camp he was horrible. Surprised that Petitti got released, but I guess that speaks to the better depth at tackle this year over last year.

The New Orleans Saints picked up Terrance Copper and Rob Petitti.

Payton had them both last year. That adds to some other former Cowboys that are now on the roster, LBs Scott Shanle and Scott Fujita.

IRVING, Texas - After cutting down the roster to 53 players on Saturday, the Cowboys finalized their nine-man practice squad, which includes fourth-round pick Skyler Green.

The Cowboys also re-signed quarterback Matt Baker, defensive end Stephen Bowen, guard D'Anthony Batiste, cornerback Quincy Butler, running back Keylon Kincade, Swedish linebacker Carl-Johan Bjork and tight ends Tony Curtis and Jerome Collins, who was in training camp with the St. Louis Rams.

Aside from Collins, the other eight players went to camp with the Cowboys. Normally teams are allotted eight players on their practice squad, but Bjork counts as an exemption as part of the NFL's International Practice Squad Program.

The biggest name on the squad is Green, who was expected to bolster the Cowboys' return game this season. But not only was he rather average on punt and kickoff returns, but he failed to provide any kind of help as a wide receiver. Green did not line up at receiver in the final three preseason games, falling behind rookies Sam Hurd and Miles Austin and first-year wideout Jamaica Rector on the depth chart.

But just as Rector did last year, Green should get a chance to improve his receiving skills this season working with the scout team in practice.

Baker will be an important player on the practice squad, considering the Cowboys have just two quarterbacks on the active roster. In years past, the team has used its third quarterback to run the scout team, but Baker will likely handle those duties this year.

Baker, a rookie free agent from North Carolina, joined the Cowboys one week into training camp after Yale rookie Jeff Mroz was released. Baker, who never played in the preseason, started to get more practice reps than Drew Henson, who was released two weeks ago.

Along with Kincade, Curtis is the only other returning player from last year's practice squad.

The NFL changed the eligibility rules of the practice squad this year, allowing players to spend three years on a squad rather than just two. That gives Kincade a chance to stick around this year after spending the last two seasons on the Cowboys' practice squad.

Skyler Green is now back. For those of you who didn't think Vanderjagt's inconsistency didn't have anything to do with a ripple effect on other players, in particular special teams contributors, Parcells said it did today in his press conference.

Bill also said that he liked Copper and he had done everything he had asked of him but that Terrance wasn't going to play much and that Hurd, Rector and Austin had better upside.

IRVING, Texas - Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells didn't want two kickers on his 53-man roster, but Mike Vanderjagt's groin injury left him no choice but to keep second-year veteran Shaun Suisham as insurance.

That caused a "domino effect" on the rest of the roster, including the release of fourth-round pick Skyler Green and veterans Rob Petitti and Terrance Copper. Green cleared waivers and was signed to the practice squad Monday, while Petitti and Copper were picked up by New Orleans.
