Football: Trinity's game plan played to perfection

Even though a football game is played on a 100-yard field, the Trinity Tigers only needed about 60.

Trinity's "Black Flag" defense held the East Texas Baptist Tigers to 163 yards of offense in its 41-0 victory in front of 2,100 fans at E.M. Stevens Stadium on Saturday night.

Blake Barmore threw for three touchdowns on 21 of 30 passing in Trinity's 15th consecutive opening-game victory.

Trinity scored on its first three possessions with field goals of 22 and 28 yards by Peter Licalzi and a 36-yard TD pass from Barmore to Matthew Weldon.

"That was what I call a quality win because that's a good football team," Trinity coach Steve Mohr said. "I didn't know how we were going to react because they're definitely the toughest opener we've had here in at least 10 years."

Barmore and Jacob Cannon combined for 308 yards among 11 receivers for Trinity, compared to 58 yards passing for fellow Division III-team East Texas Baptist.

Quarterback RoShawn Johnson led the visitors on the ground with 72 yards on 16 rushes.

Trinity took a 20-0 lead into halftime, and Mohr said the turning point of the game was Anthony Hicks' 64-yard kickoff return to begin the third quarter.

Late in the game, Trinity was the beneficiary of a missed down call.

After an incomplete pass on third-and-11, Jacob Cannon's pass on fourth-and-11 was incomplete, and a defensive pass interference penalty was waved off because Cannon's pass was ruled uncatchable. At that point, the ball should have been given to East Texas Baptist with a turnover on downs.

On the next play, Cannon completed a 30-yard touchdown pass to Chris Coleman to give Trinity its final score.

"That was strange," Mohr said. "I said to my coaches, 'that's fourth down, right?' and they said, 'No, we're lining up.'"

No protest was made by the East Texas Baptist coaches.

I saw that today but didn't make the connection. Nice job amigo! Glad to see the EN recognizing your skills.

That fifth down was weird.

It seemed everybody in the box knew except the officials on the field (and there was at least one game official in the press box).

Thanks, Mikey.

Thanks. I was following it on Gametracker.

Chase is trying to replace Barrick in more ways than one running the ball so damn much.

Good job on the story, JB - a improvement over the E-N's normal TU game coverage. The team is 118-20 since '94 but most people in SA don't even realize there's a team there. I heard the RB from Shiner (Chris Baer) may have suffered a season-ending knee injury, anything there? Was Barmore getting the ball downfield? One of their problems the last few years is that the passing game hasn't been terribly vertical, so the opponent's defense didn't really have to worry about deep pass patterns. Hopefully you will get to cover next week's game against Texas Lutheran, which should be a much better game. I was expecting more from ETBU, to be honest.

You might want to talk to Bob King (AD) to see what the plans are for updating the stadium. Supposedly they are putting in turf and expanding the anemic home bleachers some but I haven't heard anything since the end of last season. Last I heard the work was going to be done after this season. Included will be a new press box - which from experience I know is badly needed.

I agree.

Trinity, as a Division III school, might lack some of the immediate pizzazz that other, bigger schools might have. That's not terribly unusual in San Antonio, because Trinity is often lost in the shuffle for any number of reasons. But for having rolled up a 10+ year record measured in annual conference titles and playoff appearances and a couple of deep playoff runs (even the production of an NFL player), the most publicity that Trinity's football program has gotten is the uproar over Roy Hampton's arrest the weekend before the Tigers played in the Stagg Bowl. That seems shameful to me.

Good to see that the E-N put a reputable journalist on at least one game. Maybe it can become something of a beat for JB and reporting will improve substantially.

Those of you seeking better coverage of Trinity should e-mail or call the editors.

Baer went down on a tackle where he seemed to get jerked down along the sideline, so I can imagine that knee giving out.

It was on the other side of the field, though, so I couldn't really see how it happened, only the tackle. It was clean, but rough, from my angle.

He had to be helped off the field by two trainers and stayed on a table behind the bench for the rest of the game, even after it was over and the players' families were on the field (which I thought was very cool).

I don't know what's next for me as far as coverage goes. I'm a part-timer now who will pretty much do whatever is asked of me.

Barmore's passes, while not downfield a whole lot, were pretty much on target. He seemed to find the open man very well. The passes he did go downfield on were 30-40 yards and his receivers caught them...very few drops, if any.

You don't get your picture next to the byline? :madrun

(Guess the E-N has some standards!)

Hell, we're lucky the E-N deigns to cover Trinity at all. They're not about to waste any column space on things like pictures.
