Even though a football game is played on a 100-yard field, the Trinity Tigers only needed about 60.
Trinity's "Black Flag" defense held the East Texas Baptist Tigers to 163 yards of offense in its 41-0 victory in front of 2,100 fans at E.M. Stevens Stadium on Saturday night.
Blake Barmore threw for three touchdowns on 21 of 30 passing in Trinity's 15th consecutive opening-game victory.
Trinity scored on its first three possessions with field goals of 22 and 28 yards by Peter Licalzi and a 36-yard TD pass from Barmore to Matthew Weldon.
"That was what I call a quality win because that's a good football team," Trinity coach Steve Mohr said. "I didn't know how we were going to react because they're definitely the toughest opener we've had here in at least 10 years."
Barmore and Jacob Cannon combined for 308 yards among 11 receivers for Trinity, compared to 58 yards passing for fellow Division III-team East Texas Baptist.
Quarterback RoShawn Johnson led the visitors on the ground with 72 yards on 16 rushes.
Trinity took a 20-0 lead into halftime, and Mohr said the turning point of the game was Anthony Hicks' 64-yard kickoff return to begin the third quarter.
Late in the game, Trinity was the beneficiary of a missed down call.
After an incomplete pass on third-and-11, Jacob Cannon's pass on fourth-and-11 was incomplete, and a defensive pass interference penalty was waved off because Cannon's pass was ruled uncatchable. At that point, the ball should have been given to East Texas Baptist with a turnover on downs.
On the next play, Cannon completed a 30-yard touchdown pass to Chris Coleman to give Trinity its final score.
"That was strange," Mohr said. "I said to my coaches, 'that's fourth down, right?' and they said, 'No, we're lining up.'"
No protest was made by the East Texas Baptist coaches.
