We changed the look and format of the FullSportPress.com front page.

I just wanted everyone to check it out.

Thanks.

With the original content, live basketball news, archiving features and the rest ... hopefully the daily viewership will continue to grow.

Looks better. Better structured. Definitely an improvement.

If I had a criticism it would be the quality of the thumbnails in the central section. Do you use a lot of compression to save space on the server? or is it a resizing problem?

Agreed. It's a lot better than before. Things are easier to get to and it isn't cluttered. Good job.

I'll bust out a criticism though, but it really doesn't have anything to do with functionality: the top banner is ugly. I think the site could gain a ton of life if it was replaced. But again, that doesn't have anything to do with the site's functionality, which is great.

Well, for me, the top banner is slightly cut off within the window. It's about halfway through the orange circle and 1/3 of the way down in the "FullSportPress" lettering.

Other than that, it's a hell of a lot cleaner. Me likey.

Nice. It looks a lot cleaner and better organized. I agree with Slomo, though -- those thumbnails are a bit rough.

No direct link to the forums from the main page? Maybe I missed it but it didn't seem obvious.

They look fine on my computer and they are perfectly clear. What's wrong with how they look to you -- maybe you see something that we don't see.

Is it like that for everyone? Again, that's not how it looks at all for me.

It's at the top of the page, but maybe that's cut off for you?

The top is cut off for me too when I use Firefox. I tested with IE and it was fine.

Ditto on the banner and looking a lot cleaner.

Good job!

Yeah, it's fine in IE, but not Firefox. The only thumbnails that are smooth and clear are Wally and Stern.

Can you check the banner now? We made some adjustments for Firefox, Netscape, etc users.

The problem with the pictures is probably due to the fact that I used Paint Shop Pro instead of Photoshop. Next time stories are added, we'll use Photoshop and make sure it is set to the highest level.

Thanks for all the feedback. It is still a work in progress over the next couple days as we iron everything out.

For those who said the picture quality wasn't great, check out the latest pictures. Hopefully those will appear at a higher resolution for you.

Thanks.

Pierce, Marbury, and Hinrich still look a little rough, but the others look great (if you've uploaded new versions, though, it may just be my cache).

We didn't re-do those, but just added new ones.

The new thumbnails look a lot better. The problem was the edges between dark and light parts were jagged. I noticed that the new pics are twice as big than the old ones (kB wise) so it was probably a too agresive compression setting.

I've recently had the opportunity to test Macromedia Fireworks, its not great for editing but has a fantastic export utility that does a great job of optimizing the pics for web publishing - but if you already have Photoshop I wouldn't switch to anything else.

Which sotware do you use for the website design&publishing (I'd guess Frontpage since your Apache server has the Frontpage extensions installed)?

I just use notepad 99% of the time. I hate frontpage ... the rare times I use software, I use Cofee Cup or Macromedia Dreamworks.

There is an article manager software in place now for FullSportPress.com that handles all the creation, deployment and storage of all new articles.

WAAY too much focus on the Spurs! It's like you're from San Antonio or something...

Slomo

That's good to know since Frontpage handles code for other browser really bad. I share your hatred for that software. I use Dreamworks myself and correct things by hand when I find a problem in different browsers. But I do not do a lot of web designing anyway (animations and video are my forte).

Notepad is by far the best page editor.

It looks outstanding! Very well done.

My only suggestion would be regarding the banner. I agree with Brodels. I think it could be improved to draw attention to it; let new visitors know where they are. My eyes are immediately drawn to the articles with the color pics. Maybe changing the grey background to a shade of blue? There is no doubt the content will keep people coming back but adding some pop to the banner could be advantagous.

Just my $.02

Again, great look. I appreciate the hard work!

From the "eyes just got too old crowd":

The format is nice, but size=-2 on the font puts it at difficult to read. Generally, I try to put my browser at the lowest comfortable size (same for most people I would guess), so going a lot smaller than that will be a problem. Below is how part of it appears.

Thanks for the input, blackbucket. I'll come up with some changes later today.

Spurster, what browser are you using? It should be verdana font ... and that looks like something else.

I'm using Mozilla on Linux, which doesn't have a verdana font. I'll compare it to WIndoze later today.
