The last couple of times I have ran Disk Cleanup my computer always restarts for no reason. My Compress old files is 5,380,830. It has never been that big. I have been trying to run disk clean up but it never works. It has worked fine in the past. When the computer comes back from restarting it some error... blah blah, It had all those symbols and numbers related to the error, I am going to try to run the cleaner again. If it restarts I will be sure to get those numbers and what not.

EDIT- I just ran the cleaner a few more times. It either freezes up or restarts. I haven't gotten the message that an error has occured like I did before yet, but I will try and jot down the numbers if it occurs. Also why would it freeze up?

I have gotten the file size down to 3 mil now.

Also, I wanted to see how long it took my computer to go on. So once I pushed to button on the tower, It took me 1 minute and 50 seconds for me to reach the desktop. Why does it take so long?

More than likely your HD is dying. I'm not a big fan of compressing files, better to just get a bigger HD.

Slave your main HD to another computer and run scandisk or use some HD utility to check the integrity of your HD.

My hard drive isn't even a year old.

I have seen them go bad after one week. Some are even bad fresh from the box.

Its 160 GB and I have 112 GB left.
You may have hit a bad cluster 48 GB deep in the HD . I had a 30 GB HD that would freeze after I went over 15 GBs.

That does not go so smooth with Norton. That shit is deep. Norton alone can add another 30 seconds to your start up. I find it hard to use norton it wants to control every move you make. It's a wonder he can have more than one spyware using norton.

Since this guy still has dial up? I am thinking he has an old motherboard, he could have some over clocking issues with a large HD and any upgrades he made if he has a POS pc.

Some folks forget your dial up modem can go bad and you can still get on line, If the modem is bad it will short out the system and may cause freeze ups.

Does your PC lock up when you click the add new hardware icon?

I would start from scratch.

Unplugg all cords to the PC phone line printer etc.. If you have a bad mouse or keyboard it can make you freeze up also.

Put in another HD to see if it is something else.

Take out your HD and place it in another PC.

or........

Put all your music/movies and porn on DVD and flush out your system start over.

go to run
type msconfig

I don't understand the last part.

On Bug Doctor I had 13 errors.
I need to register again..

I had to order a brand new computer last year. New everything except a monitor. MB everything. So the dial up modem is also pretty new.

Ok back

Do a system restore to the time before all the lock ups.

when your PC locks up, is it always the same time? like after you have had the pc on for 15 minutes? make sure the fan is working on the cpu

Do you have a disc in the cd rom when it locks up? If your cd rom is going out it will cause lock ups also.

Did you disable call notes? Since your on dial up ,any call you get while on the PC can cause a break in the system and sometimes lock ups.

Check your time and date if it is wrong everytime you boot up? you may need a new battery, Many folks have no idea how importaint the battery is. They can't figure out why they can't check thier account balance at the banks website. The date and time has to match up to get access.

what kind of HD do you have? Many of those brand types are known to all of a sudden flake out after one year.

So far this afternoon I have....

Unplugged everything and left if off for about 10 minutes. Then plugged everything back in.

I did what Ducks said to disable everything in the start up and run the cleaner... Well it froze again.

What do you want to do with my XP disk?

boot of the cd run chkdsk /r
do a repair then you will get a place to type that

I don't have a spare HD so I can't reinstall XP. Also, I don't think I have a virus, Disk Cleaner just freezes up when I try to run it.
Does any one have a username and all that for bug doctor?

So I don't know what to do now...

Oh the reason why I have dial up.... I live in the middle of no where. I can live with out high speed. It would be nice but its not like dial up doesn't work. It still gets the job done but slower.

Also I have tried or am going to try system restore. I downloaded some stuff that I don't want to go back in install.

When worm blaster hit did it effect ME? NO

Do you get that annoying warning messg window telling you about missing Dlls and urgent updates? NO

It's no big secrect windows ME was just made to keep the microsoft share holders happy. It's really windows 98 with a tint of windows 2000 thrown in for good measure, I know ''its windows 98 with an earl screib paintjob''

But If you take out a HD with XP on it and try to put in in another PC? It will just sit there and do nothing.

But if you take out a HD with ME and put it in another PC? it starts to look for the dirivers and has a better chance of booting up.

But the main reason ME is better than XP?
when you flush your PC or someone elses PC? do you have to activate it in 28 days or else no more windows? :lmao

Where would I see those errors? When I am shutting down my computer? As of right now, I haven't seen those.

Steve Perry

The problem is with ram fact,....
any file (error) related to mini dump is ram related,
so its possible it could be a ram virus, a cute ram virus possibly unable to be removed from the hard drive, possibly if so this virus shields a couple of fragments of your drive,so it cant be detected, but yet runs in the memory. (ram) formating the drive wont work, just damaging your drive by overwrithing it, mmmm... Well
my idea is if im correct then if it is running in memory and if it a type of virus, take out ram and put in a shity stick you wont use again start computer wait till it reboots itself, and dont let it start again then, change your hard drive, bingo the virus has no where to go so put origioal ram back in and your shity stick be infected now i hope.

here try this seems microsft have d awnsers... no surprise they caused it

That's why this is taking long. If you had your XP disc? we could replace any Dll's or drivers you may have lost. If you still have unwanted freeze ups after that? Then I know what steps to take.

If you take the cover off your tower, or if you know the model of your PC?

I need that number off the motherboard so I can see if I have the right RAM for your PC

see if you see a # that says PC-100 or PC-2700 etc........

I tired pressing F9, but I got this at the bottom...

"please install express recovery from gigabyte cd title" Um yah. I think I have a gigabyte cd on it that came with the MB? I put it in and I couldn't find anything that had to do with express recovery....

How else do i boot from the cd?

You have to change your CD/DVD drive to your primary bootable drive in your bios. Press either delete or f1 depending on your MB to get to the bios at startup.

Sorry for the late reply. I made a house call last night and this dude was all jacked up. I had to bring his PC to my place and when I got on line RoadRunner sent me a warning page to call them. His PC was being used to spread some trojan e mails.
RoadRunner only gives you so many warnings then they cut off your www access for a few hours.

Just tell them you work on PC's from your home and you will get some slack.I even know the the Tech boss's name we have chatted many times. He gives me 25.00 bucks off each month since I told so many DSL users to change to cable. It's supposed to be 50,00 dollars off your bill each time, but you have to go to thier website and put the customers name in first. So I told some asshat (trust me he was a real anal dude) on the phone one day how am I going to know when I go to someone's house if they want RoadRunner? I told him If I knew that? That means I would know the funture and I would be in Vegas making sports bets. He said as soon as they want to change just use thier PC to go to the website. I told them how can I use thier PC if they don't have www access yet? Many folks who call me are getting on line for the fist time. I do alot of old folks around the medical center area. You don't make much money but you go home with a shit load of pills :smokin

Anyway I told them I will stop telling folks to change from DSL to Time Warner in the future , it's to much trouble. and that's when I met Richard. He says they give the Bounus to best Buyworkers but only Austin let's private contractors get the Bonus for hooking folks up.

For some reason San Antonio does not have that luxury. Anyway short story long, this dude has worm Blaster and a few other turds I picked up using his HD as my slave drive. His PC has been in storage for a few years. He still has Rotten.com links.

I would use the phone from now on to further fix your PC ,It's faster and I hate the fact I am spaming this forum as it is, Trust me I can go w/o another warning from Manny, I may want to go to another GTG some day.

spurs_2108

I went ahead and got the cd to boot. I pressed R when it was time, then I got this message..

Which windows installation would you like to log onto

1 C:\Windows
(to cancel press enter)

So I guess I had to press 1. The first time I ran this I didn't press anything and my computer froze I guess and my tower was making a loud constant beep noise. So I tried this again, pressing 1 this time and it made the same noise, then I tried it again and I didn't press anything and it froze I think.

What is the computer suppose to do after I press 1? Am I suppose to press 1?

To run the Recovery Console from the Windows XP startup disks or the Windows XP CD-ROM, follow these steps:
1. Insert the Windows XP startup disk into the floppy disk drive, or insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.

Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted.
2. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
3. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you must access from the Recovery Console.
4. When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
5. At the command prompt, type the appropriate commands to diagnose and repair your Windows XP installation
The following list describes the available commands for the Recovery Console:
• Attrib changes attributes on one file or subdirectory.
• Batch executes commands that you specify in the text file, Inputfile. Outputfile holds the output of the commands. If you omit the Outputfile parameter, output appears on the screen.
• Bootcfg modifies the Boot.ini file for boot configuration and recovery.
• CD (Chdir) operates only in the system directories of the current Windows installation, removable media, the root directory of any hard disk partition, or the local installation sources.
• Chkdsk The /p switch runs Chkdsk even if the drive is not flagged as dirty. The /r switch locates bad sectors and recovers readable information. This switch implies /p. Chkdsk requires Autochk. Chkdsk automatically looks for Autochk.exe in the startup folder. If Chkdsk cannot find the file in the startup folder, it looks for the Windows 2000 Setup CD-ROM. If Chkdsk cannot find the installation CD-ROM, Chkdsk prompts the user for the location of Autochk.exe.
• Cls clears the screen.
• Copy copies one file to a target location. By default, the target cannot be removable media, and you cannot use wildcard characters. Copying a compressed file from the Windows 2000 Setup CD-ROM automatically decompresses the file.
• Del (Delete) deletes one file. Operates within the system directories of the current Windows installation, removable media, the root directory of any hard disk partition, or the local installation sources. By default, you cannot use wildcard characters.
• Dir displays a list of all files, including hidden and system files.
• Disable disables a Windows system service or driver. The variable service_or_driver is the name of the service or driver that you want to disable. When you use this command to disable a service, the command displays the service's original startup type before it changes the type to SERVICE_DISABLED. Note the original startup type so that you can use the enable command to restart the service.
• Diskpart manages partitions on hard disk volumes. The /add option creates a new partition. The /delete option deletes an existing partition. The variable device is the device name for a new partition (such as \device\harddisk0). The variable drive is the drive letter for a partition that you are deleting (for example, D). Partition is the partition-based name for a partition that you are deleting, (for example: \device\harddisk0\partition1) and can be used instead of the drive variable. The variable size is the size, in megabytes, of a new partition.
• Enable enables a Windows system service or driver. The variable service_or_driver is the name of the service or driver that you want to enable, and start_type is the startup type for an enabled service. The startup type uses one of the following formats:
SERVICE_BOOT_START
SERVICE_SYSTEM_START
SERVICE_AUTO_START
SERVICE_DEMAND_START
• Exit quits the Recovery Console, and then restarts the computer.
• Expand expands a compressed file. The variable source is the file that you want to expand. By default, you cannot use wildcard characters. The variable destination is the directory for the new file. By default, the destination cannot be removable media and cannot be read-only. You can use the attrib command to remove the read-only attribute from the destination directory. The option /f:filespec is required if the source contains more than one file. This option permits wildcard characters. The /y switch disables the overwrite confirmation prompt. The /d switch specifies that the files will not be expanded and displays a directory of the files in the source.
• Fixboot writes a new startup sector on the system partition.
• Fixmbr repairs the startup partition's master boot code. The variable device is an optional name that specifies the device that requires a new Master Boot Record. Omit this variable when the target is the startup device.
• Format formats a disk. The /q switch performs a quick format. The /fs switch specifies the file system.
• Help If you do not use the command variable to specify a command, help lists all the commands that the Recovery Console supports.
• Listsvc displays all available services and drivers on the computer.
• Logon displays detected installations of Windows and requests the local Administrator password for those installations. Use this command to move to another installation or subdirectory.
• Map displays currently active device mappings. Include the arc option to specify the use of Advanced RISC Computing (ARC) paths (the format for Boot.ini) instead of Windows device paths.
• MD (Mkdir) operates only within the system directories of the current Windows installation, removable media, the root directory of any hard disk partition, or the local installation sources.
• More/Type displays the specified text file on screen.
• Rd (Rmdir) operates only within the system directories of the current Windows installation, removable media, the root directory of any hard disk partition, or the local installation sources.
• Ren (Rename) operates only within the system directories of the current Windows installation, removable media, the root directory of any hard disk partition, or the local installation sources. You cannot specify a new drive or path as the target.
• Set displays and sets the Recovery Console environment variables.
• Systemroot sets the current directory to %SystemRoot%.

Did you ever burn your music/porn/ and favorite files to disk? Just in case you need a flush.

there have been hundreds of updates to windows since then. that's why he asked if you have run windows update. XP service pack 2 was basically a collection of updates and drivers released since service pack 1. you would want to keep windows updated so you don't have problems with newer hacks and virii.

Pressing R will only get you the recovery consol. If you want to boot of the disk to reinstall Windows you have to change your boot sequence (the way I posted earlier). It sure sounds like the HD is dying. Slave it to another computer, save your data, and try reinstalling windows after reformatting.
