MIAMI (AFP)

A millionaire activist opposed to Cuba's Communist government pleaded guilty to stowing an arsenal of weapons and munitions, according to court documents.

Santiago Alvarez, 64, a prominent member of Miami's Cuban exile community who made a fortune in real estate and spent some of it backing suspected bomber Luis Posada Carriles, pleaded guilty along with an employee, Osvaldo Mitat, 63, of conspiracy in helping caring for an arsenal of automatic weapons, grenades, grenade launchers and munitions.

In exchange for the guilty pleas, prosecutors dropped more serious charges. :rolleyes :rolleyes

Both men face as much as five years in prison.

Unknown outside Miami, much of Alvarez' appeal among Cuban-Americans stems from his friendship with Posada Carriles, wanted in Cuba and Venezuela for the bombing of a Cubana airliner in 1976 that killed 73 persons.

Posada Carriles is a former CIA agent who was sentenced in Panama for an attempted bombing of Cuban leader Fidel Castro while attending a summit in Panama in 2002.

Alvarez paid Posada Carriles' legal fees.

Posada Carriles has been in custody in Miami since last year for entering the United States illegally. A US judge ruled on Monday, 9/11/06 that he should be released, because no country is willing to host him and because the US Supreme Court ruled that immigration violators cannot be held indefinitely

A Department of Homeland Security judge ruled that Posada couldnot be deported because of alleged threat of torture in Venezuela.

According to Cuba's official newspaper on March 22, 2006, the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) informed Posada that he would continue to be detained on the grounds that he continues "to present a danger to the community and a flight risk" and claimed that he has "a history of engaging in criminal activity, associating with individuals involved in criminal activity, and participating in violent acts that indicate a disregard for the safety of the general public.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luis_Posada_Carriles
However: US judge ruled on Monday, 9/11/06 that Posada should be released, because no country is willing to host him and because the US Supreme Court ruled that immigration violators cannot be held indefinitely,
the CIA takes care of its own.
