The Chargers agreed in principle to acquire quarterback Billy Volek (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=5339) from Tennessee on Tuesday, giving San Diego a veteran to back up first-year starter Philip Rivers (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6763).

Volek's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told The Associated Press that Volek was in the process of signing the form to waive his no-trade clause.

"It's a formality at this point," Rosenhaus said. "We just have to take care of that piece of paperwork, then Billy will be on his way back home to California."

The Chargers are believed to be giving up a sixth-round draft pick that could escalate to a fifth-rounder, depending on Volek's playing time.

The trade came two days after the Chargers routed Tennessee 40-7 at Qualcomm Stadium to improve to 2-0. The teams had been talking for days, but decided to wait until after playing each other to complete the deal.

Volek, who played at Fresno State, was chosen the Titans' starter in June after Steve McNair (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=3114) was traded to Baltimore. But when the Titans signed Kerry Collins (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=3115) on Aug. 29, Volek was dropped to third on the depth chart behind rookie Vince Young (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=7752).

Rivers, a third-year pro, began the season with zero NFL starts and one touchdown pass. In San Diego's two routs, he's completed 33 of 46 passes (71.7 percent) for 343 yards and two touchdowns.

San Diego's only other quarterback through two games was rookie Charlie Whitehurst (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=7830). He made his NFL debut in mop-up duty Sunday and scored on a 14-yard run with 1:53 left. His father, David, played for the Green Bay Packers (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=gnb) from 1976-83.

Volek is "awfully enthusiastic about joining a team with the quality that the Chargers represent," Rosenhaus said. "This is a nice opportunity for Billy to go to a team that is playing very well right now, and has a need for a veteran quarterback."

Officials from the Chargers and Titans didn't return phone calls seeking comment.

Rosenhaus said he anticipated Volek would fly to San Diego on Tuesday. The Chargers have their bye this weekend before facing their toughest test yet, at Baltimore on Oct. 1.

"It's very fortuitous that the club has a bye this week because it gives Billy a chance to learn the system and acclimate himself before the next ballgame," Rosenhaus said.

Chiefs should of went after Volek harder than the Chargers but I think he still might of choose San Diego as he is from there.

Rivers will be more than fine.

Name the veteran QB available that would help.

Kerry Collins? :lol

Volek will be fine, but HF3 is exactly right, the chiefs can't expect Damon freakin Huard to perform like he did last week time after time.

Volek >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> HUard.

jeff fisher made his first discouraging words about a player today when he went off on volek. volek sounds like a real tool:

Rivers sat behind pro bowl Brees for two years. He doesn't need his hand held anymore.

Fisher said Volek was told he was the starter and that Collins was brought in for his experience and to create competition with Volek. But Fisher said Volek came to his office and went to general manager Floyd Reese the same day asking to be traded.

Fisher said he met with Volek in his office Tuesday and was told the quarterback had no hard feelings.

Volek told several reporters on his way to the airport that he got a raw deal and didn't know why he went from starter to third-stringer before the season.

"He felt compelled to set a record straight, which is not accurate," Fisher said. "His record and his comments were not accurate."

Why does Drew Rosenhaus seek out all of the loser clients? Or, do they seek him out?

If Floyd Reese sucked any more, he'd be a Raider.

We will see how it all pans out halfway through the season
