FBI: New York was safest big city in 2005, Dallas least

NEW YORK — New York remained the safest of the nation's 10 largest cities in 2005, with about one crime reported for every 37 people, according to FBI statistics.

The annual report "shows that our innovative efforts to reduce crime and increase New Yorkers' quality of life are working," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said in a statement Monday after the agency released the figures.

The large city with the highest crime rate was Dallas, with about one crime reported for every 12 people. Los Angeles, the nation's second largest city, ranked third safest, with about one crime for every 26 people.

San Jose took the no. 2 spot, while San Diego ranked fourth. Chicago, Philadelphia, Houston, San Antonio and then Phoenix followed.

The number of reported crimes in New York fell 4.3 percent last year, while the number nationwide dropped 1.2 percent. Police statistics show crime in the city has continued to fall this year, down 5.04 percent by Sept. 10 compared with the same period in 2005.

The national figures showed that violent crime rose 2.3 percent last year, the first increase since 2001. But in New York City, violent crimes — which include rape, murder, robbery and aggravated assault — fell 1.9 percent.

This is true. I'll give them that, but they still suck.

So do the Mavericks.

And the Stars.

Hell, if I know...I like Dallas, but will always love San Antonio.

Now Houston, well, there's a city that can fall in the Gulf for all I care.

Them being the only pro football team in Texas does not make them suck any less. Don't be silly.

Granted, I didn't know.

But still, at least here, the funny/stupid comments come with the quickness and I don't have to deal with that douche Yonivore.

You and your wife are smart, you would have left before.

Seriously, though, I know a lot of people from Houston, I just dislike the city itself.

And the Rockets.

You think it sucks from a distance try living here!

It will be interesting to see where Houston lands on this list next year after a full year of the Katrina Krimewave, especially with FEMA checks stopping soon.

No. When it comes time for it I'll just steal one. When in Rome, ya know?

What are the Rangers?

And I have a sneaking suspicion that Memphis, Tennessee doesn't exactly qualify as a "big city" for the FBI any more than it does for me.

Style. Defined.

It's only a small part of Dallas that accounts for the crime. As long as you stay away from Deep Ellum and Oak Cliff, you will be fine.

I never go outside of the University Park/Uptown area unless I'm being flown somewhere.

Amen.

So if the Cowboys suck and they are 1-1, since the Broncos have the same record, by the same logic, they would suck too.

I had no idea that San Antonio, San Jose, or San Diego were among the ten largest cities, really suprising.

San Antonio passed Big 'D' a few years ago. What you need to take into account is that San Antonio is pretty much just San Antonio, while Dallas is part of the Metroplex. There are probably more people in the Metroplex NOT in Dallas than IN Dallas.

I would have figured Detroit, Indianapolis, Denver, Atlanta, D.C., Seattle, Boston, Milwaukee, San Fran, and Oakland were bigger than the three Sans in the top 10. Probably is just strictly the cities themselves and not the population of the suburbs and surrounding area.

You guys can quit hating on my Cowboys and Mavs. Talk bad all you want about the city of Dallas though. We used to play all Dallas schools in our district and they are nothing but trouble, always looking for a fight.
