6 days ago, they were 8 1/2 ahead of my Astros, now they are 2 1/2 ahead.

:elephant

If SD sweeps St Louis in the next 2 games and if Astros sweep the 4 against Pittsburgh, then Astros-Atlanta series could decide the pennant.

1 1/2 Games.

I want to see Rocket, Oswalt, and Pettite pitch in the playoffs one more year. Let's Get It Done.

MajorMike
09-27-2006, 07:25 AM
The strobes are playing their abosolute best of the season while the Cards play thier worst. Is what happened in NCLS last year. The thing I love is how all the media outlets keep saying how the Cards aren't a very good team right now (4 All Stars on the DL will do that to you) which is true.... and yet they are still better than the strobes. So what does that make them?

King
09-27-2006, 08:58 AM
I'm a huge Cards fan, too - but even if they do manage to salvage this, and clinch the central, it's usually the team that gets hot at the right time that rolls. Not the team that backs in.

They're simply not good enough to make any noise in the playoffs.

MajorMike
09-27-2006, 09:23 AM
I agree. They are way too injured right now to go anywhere. I see the same for the Mets. They are coasting and not playing good ball. Looks like will be one of the West teams in the WS against the Twins.

TheSanityAnnex
09-27-2006, 09:24 AM
Padres seem to be rolling at the right time, and if Giles gets hot, it could prove troublesome for other teams. Klesko and Greene are making their returns as well. We shall see.

T Park
09-27-2006, 03:37 PM
Yeah the Cardinals are in a tailspin, and there is no stopping it.

How I'm a bitch, I don't know.

Congrats to the Astros, they are getting red hot at the right time, and they are doing very very well.

I hope the Cardinals don't lose this lead, but the team looks so uptight and worn out that it doesn't look good.

Anthony Reyes going tonight vs red hot Chris Young.

I think the key point to last night's game, was they had bases loaded with 1 out, and Molina pops out.

If they pinch hit for him there, suicide squeeze, something, and turn that game around, then we are obviously talking about a totally different story.

Jimcs50
09-27-2006, 03:50 PM
TPark, the Red Sox do not choke. They have had more injuries this year than ny team in the MLs. They are the only team to come back from 0-3 in baseball to win a series....that is clutch.

The Astros are my team too, anyone can tell you that. I have one AL team and one NL team, just like most people.

Now, if St Louis does not win division, it will be the biggest fold in the history of sports. 9 games up with 2 wks to go and lose the division???? That would be horrible for the state of Missouri.

It will still be almost impossible for the Astros to catch them, but it sure make it fun to watch.

The homer by Pujols hit Big Mac land.

Third tier, about 480 490 feet more than likely.

Kind of a no doubter.

THE SCHNIDE IS OVER!!!!!!!!!!

WHEW!!!!!!!!!!!!

Magic number down to 4, and if the Pirates can help, its down to 3.

The bitch about the game tonight.

Tyler Johnson gets the win, when, hes prob the second worst pitcher out of the bullpen.

Reyes was absolutely nails tonight going 6 good innings.

Ok, I'm sorry. Generally, the team that runs the table in the playoffs is the team that gets hot at the right time. Not the team that backs in.

Although, there may be exceptions to this, such as the 2005 Chicago White Sox.

T Park

The Red Sox weren't exactly tearing things up going in.

The Marlins IIRC barely got the wild card.

T Park
09-28-2006, 11:32 AM
According to my Cardinal buddies, its supposed to rain all day in Pittsburgh.

If THAT happens, that really throws a wrench in the whole damn process.

ESPECIALLY, if they finish the season and the Cards only have a 1 game lead.

If the dudnals can finish 2 games up, then both teams wouldn't have to play the makeup, and there wouldn't be that stupid 1 game playoff tuesday, wich for some unknown reason would be played in Houston.

T Park
09-28-2006, 11:45 AM
Yeah its raining pretty darn good right now.

Supposedly once that moves through, they are gonna give it a shot.

What hurts the Stros, is if Oswalt goes and pitches only about 2 or 3 innings, then they delay again, and have to go to a really tired bullpen.

Wheeler went 3 innings, Lidge 2, Sampson went 2 and 1/3.

Guys available would be I assume Miller, Nieve, Qualls, and others that I don't know about.

But, rain has reallllly throw a wrench into this baseball season, two weeks ago with San Fran and STL, and now today.

leemajors
09-28-2006, 12:06 PM
the astros won a coin flip during the card/stros series in houston, that's why they get home field for the playoff (if it occurs).

MajorMike
09-28-2006, 12:52 PM
The Cards have a makeup; the strobes don't.

Therefore, the game-up will be a half. If StL is 1.5 up or more, there will be no make up game. If StL is only .5 up, there will be.

In that situation, if StL wins, they win. If StL loses, it's a tie.

TPark, how can I tone it down???

My team has underachieved all year, they made no moves before trading deadline to add pop to their anemic lineup, they totally disappointed all of us Astros fans all year, they were DEAD in the water just 10 days ago. But they actually have a good chance to not only make the playoffs, they have the best chance to make the World Series, if they do get in post season, given the Mets' problems, especially the season ending injury to Pedro.

I think we are a better team. I think our injuries are dragging us down. Can't be a contender when your #2 and All Star pitcher has been hurt all season and is now out, your All Star closer has been suffering from complecations of hip surgery all season and is now out, your All Star, Golden Glove, and 2-time reigning Defensive Player of the Year Center Fielder has been out for 2 months with post-concussion syndrome and is still having vertigo issues, and your All Star and Golden Glove Short Stop has been out for 2 months with injuries.

No excuses, just facts. Our pitching sucks and we have relied on offense and outstanding defense. Our 2 best defensive players are gone, and we have no offensive continuity.

This team will have at least a top 2 in each of MVP, Cy Young, and Comeback Player (Rolen) and also a top 5 Rookie of Year (Duncan) and likely 2 Gold Gloves (Al, Rolen) and yet is going no where. Its a tuff call... do you want to win the Central and get blasted in the playoffs or just go home? On a side note... I listened to the Atl game and I couldn't help but hear about how Berkman was having the best season ever for Houst. I just thought it was weird that the best ever strobe season won't even get the poor guy in the top 3 in MVP voting.

The Cardinals have yet to have any discussions with free agent Jeff Suppan on a new contract.

Suppan probably priced himself out of the team's range with his success in the playoffs. There's now talk of him getting at least $32 million over four years, setting him up as a potential bust. He's a fine bet to stay healthy and put up reasonable numbers if he remains in the National League. However, it needs to be remembered that he had a 1.45 WHIP despite a remarkably easy schedule last season. Also, his career ERA in the AL stands at 4.96. The Yankees are among the AL teams believed to have some interest in him.

Not Timlin.

Timlin has been very good for the Boston Red Sox.

Not really. 24-17 with a 3.6 ERA for a middle reliever isn't great. He also has a 7+ ERA in the post season. No matter, he was only with the Cards for 1 full season.

By the way, the Cards will not pickup Jimmy Hollywood's team option 10+ mil contract. However, I hear (from a little Red birdie) that they are currently restructuring a 2-year deal that will give him around 6-8 each year, allowing him to stay 2 more years with us.

1st on the agenda, however, is signing Carp to an extension. The Cards have an 8 Mil option in '08. They are looking to lock him up, long term.

2nd is Jimmy's contract.

Next is figuring out what to do with Suppan.

Trying to sign Spezio, believe it or not, is high on the list. Tony makes a living off his role players, and having someone to fill in for not only the oft-injured Rolen but able to play left, plus being a legacy Card, makes him a high priority.

Common wisdom is Miles has earned a spot for next year, and supposedly he wants to stay. May be our everyday 2B.

Weaver made 8+ Mil this year and didn't pitch like it until the playoffs. If he wants anything near 8, he won't be back, tho it is VERY difficult to see anyone offering him that.

2 names I hear that I don't understand are Wilson and Radke. For some reason, the Cards really want to keep Preston. He had a nice run, we should just let him go. They are talking to Radke, who is contemplating retirement.

So Taguchi will have to compete with Skip Schumaker for the outfield utility spot. Tony loves So, but Skip is young with lots of promise, while So has been around a few years and not done much.

Mulder - doesn't get along with Duncan - bye. Too bad because we gave up so much for him, but if he is the worst decision Walt makes,I'm good with that.

Belliard - bye. Back to Cleveland. Thanks for letting us rent him for the post season.

Marquis - bye. Don't let the door hit you in the ass. Woody and Matty get million dollar contracts after some great years... hate to see what Jason is, or I should say isn't going to get.

Bigbie (who?) - bye.

Flores, Hancock, Bennett, Rodriguez, Sosa - all will be back unless someone offers some mad money to Flores or Sosa.

Here is an interesting note:
$18 million earmarked for Izzy, Encarnacion and Looper next season.
With the way Wainright pitched, some speculate Izzy could be traded. Looper is good but not worth the money coming to him (4.5 Mil '07, 5.5 Mil '08). Walt is also likely to dump Juan and eat some of his salary. Also possible that if he brings back all the above mentioned pitchers (Flores, Sosa, Hancock) and keep Suppan, which will allow Wainwright to stay in the pen (speculation he will be a starter next season) that Walt packages Izzy and Juan for a real left fielder (Duncan will start in RF next year).
