Rodman unfortunately, IMO, still hasn't addressed his mental health issues.

DALLAS (AP) -- Flamboyant Dallas Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens denied a police report he attempted suicide, saying he became groggy after mixing painkillers with supplements.

He said Wednesday the confusion likely stemmed from an empty bottle of pain medication found by his publicist, who was with him at the time and called 911. He said the rest of the pills were in a drawer.

"I was non-responsive when she made that call," Owens said. "She made the call out of her judgment for my well-being."

Appearing in a news conference at team headquarters a few hours after leaving a hospital for what a police report described as "a drug overdose," Owens wore workout gear and no bandage on his broken right hand. The star receiver smiled and seemed more amused than peeved at the latest ruckus surrounding him.

Owens blamed a combination of hydrocodone, a generic form of Vicodin, with all-natural supplements for making him ill.

"It's very unfortunate for it to go from an allergic reaction to a suicide attempt," he said.

Owens was released from the hospital before noon. He flashed a thumbs-up to reporters as he left, went home, then made it to team headquarters in time to catch passes from quarterback Drew Bledsoe.

Rescue workers arrived at Owens' home around 8 p.m. Tuesday and took him to an emergency room. When word spread, publicist Kim Etheredge said it was an allergic reaction.

But the story shifted Wednesday morning when several media outlets received a police report -- that had yet to be released by the authorities -- saying Owens had attempted suicide by overdosing on the painkillers, even putting two more pills into his mouth after an unidentified friend, later identified as Etheredge, intervened.

The police document, first reported by WFAA-TV, said Owens was asked by rescue workers "if he was attempting to harm himself, at which time (he) stated: 'Yes."'
When officially released by police, about half the document was blacked out, including the phrases "attempting suicide by prescription pain medication" and "a drug overdose," as well as the details of Owens having two pills pried from his mouth and Owens saying "Yes" when asked if he intended to harm himself.

"I wasn't coherent as they probably thought I was," Owens said. "A number of people were asking me questions. I don't remember the police officers that were in there or the doctors that were in there."

Owens said he feels capable of playing Sunday in Tennessee, despite this incident and his broken hand. He added that he's "not depressed about anything" and that he expects to practice Thursday.

Etheredge also appeared at Owens' news conference, saying she "did not take anything out of his mouth."

"This is sad," she said. "Terrell had a reaction to different pills, and just to state he was trying to commit suicide it was unfair."

"Terrell has 25 million reasons why he should be alive," she added, referring to the $25 million, three-year contract he signed in March with the Cowboys.

"I'm just upset," Etheredge added. "I feel they take advantage of Terrell. Had this been someone else, this may not have happened."

Dallas police officials declined to comment on Etheredge's denials. "We can't discuss the police report because of privacy laws," said a spokesman, Sgt. Gil Cerda.

I see what you are saying, but again I don't think that anybody will try and make the preformance enhancing drugs connection to this story, the suicide BS is plenty for them to write about. Terrell Owens' longtime personal trainer said Wednesday that "a perfect storm" of physically and emotionally devastating events conspired to put the superstar receiver into a tailspin that resulted in a trip to the emergency room Tuesday.

Those events also generated what the trainer called "erroneous" reports of a suicide attempt.

"A lot of things were coming to a head anyway, and then this happened," said James "Buddy" Primm, 55, who until earlier this month, had been living with Owens in his loft on Commerce Street, in the shadow of Fair Park.

Primm said Owens underwent two traumatic events Monday involving his 7-year-old son and his fiancée, a woman he has dated for three years.

Owens' son, from a previous relationship, celebrated his birthday Monday, Primm said. Owens was distraught, he said, about not being able to be see the boy, who lives in California.

"He wanted to get together with the boy," Primm said. "But the boy could not come here, and Terrell could not go there."

Then hours later, a woman whom Primm described as Owens' fiancée broke off the relationship. Primm declined to give the woman's last name but said she and Owens had been dating for three years. She also lives in California.

"That's been coming on forever," Primm said of the breakup. "She's not a bad girl. She's cool, she's fine. He said, 'Can I take a break from the engagement?' And she said, 'No, let's just put a stop to it.' And that was a complete surprise to Terrell."

Primm, who lives in Duluth, Ga., near Owens' off-season residence in Atlanta, has known the Cowboys receiver for seven years. They met when Owens played for the San Francisco 49ers, "exactly 16 weeks before he stood on the star" during a game at Texas Stadium.

That happened during the 2000 season, and Primm says that since then the two have forged a father-son-like bond that Owens seems to need. Growing up in abject poverty in rural Alabama, Owens was raised by his mother and grandmother and, according to Primm, has long been in need of a dominant male figure in his life.

"He's getting to be like my son," said Primm, who returned to his home in Georgia last week. He plans to return to Dallas in the next few days to be with Owens.

Owens "doesn't have many friends," said the trainer, who contends that the public and news media have long misperceived a man he considers "a gentle soul" and a "caring, highly sensitive" individual with a fragile psyche.

"He's a good person," Primm said. "A very good person."

Primm said he had been in touch with Owens and members of the player's inner circle on Wednesday. He said that after hearing the chronology of Tuesday's events, he understood why and how the incident took place and that suicide wasn't an issue.

Before arriving at the Cowboys' practice facility at Valley Ranch on Tuesday, Owens spent the morning addressing students at a local high school about the perils of domestic abuse and how it's not their fault should their parents choose to fight.

"It's an issue he cares about," Primm said.

Owens reported to the Cowboys' practice facility at 11:30 a.m. and worked out "hard," Primm said, catching "bullets" from quarterbacks Drew Bledsoe and Tony Romo for the first time since last week's surgery on his broken right hand.

And for the first time since the surgery, Owens felt serious pain, the trainer said, noting that until Tuesday night, Owens had not been on a regular routine of taking pain medication "because he hadn't needed to."

The receiver left Valley Ranch around 4 p.m. Tuesday and drove home in rush-hour traffic, arriving at his Exposition Park loft around 5:30 p.m.

That's when the physical trauma began.

At Primm's direction, Owens had been taking about 30 supplements a day, up from his normal six, "to accelerate the healing process," the trainer said. The supplements included "all different types of calcium, all different types of magnesium ... a few different types of glandulars," Primm said. "Things for the immune system, to get blood to that area."

He said he had also been using a $40,000 laser device on Owens' injury.

"Five minutes on the bottom of the hand, five minutes on the top" first thing in the morning, Primm said. That had accelerated the healing process, he said, in addition to another device about the size of a breadbox, into which Owens inserted a gloved hand wrapped in a towel to help "dissolve scar tissue."

Primm said that under normal circumstances, the machine designed to remove scar tissue "just knocks you out. It makes you sleepy."

He said the machine has the dual effect of "getting rid of scar tissue and of cells the body isn't using." Such therapy is vital, he said, in allowing bones to heal as rapidly as possible.

It was Primm who introduced Owens to such devices and to the hyperbaric chamber, which he said enabled the athlete to play in Super Bowl XXXIX in February 2005 for the Philadelphia Eagles, despite suffering a broken leg only weeks before.

But the combination of this week's events was apparently too much, the trainer said.

As for what comes next, Primm predicts that Owens will play Sunday against the Tennessee Titans. And how will he fare for the rest of the season?

"Great," the trainer said.

1. This was a half-assed suicide attempt...which is what a lot of suicide attempts are...

2. He took a couple extra pills to try to "escape" or zone out and his publicist (who should be fired after yesterday!) over-reacted. She DID tell the police that he was depressed...she probably did try to get pills out of his mouth (or at least checked his mouth). Wait for the 911 tape to come out...

Regardless of which of those 2 it was, I believe that he was probably telling his sob story to his publicist and he probably did say that he was down or depressed.

100% of NFL players take pain pills.
100% of NFL players take supplements.
Nobody has ever had an "allergic reaction" to a combination of these...not that reported anyway.

"He wanted to get together with the boy," Primm said. "But the boy could not come here, and Terrell could not go there."

Then hours later, a woman whom Primm described as Owens' fiancée broke off the relationship. Primm declined to give the woman's last name but said she and Owens had been dating for three years. She also lives in California.

"That's been coming on forever," Primm said of the breakup. "She's not a bad girl. She's cool, she's fine. He said, 'Can I take a break from the engagement?' And she said, 'No, let's just put a stop to it.' And that was a complete surprise to Terrell."

Primm, who lives in Duluth, Ga., near Owens' off-season residence in Atlanta, has known the Cowboys receiver for seven years. They met when Owens played for the San Francisco 49ers, "exactly 16 weeks before he stood on the star" during a game at Texas Stadium.

That happened during the 2000 season, and Primm says that since then the two have forged a father-son-like bond that Owens seems to need. Growing up in abject poverty in rural Alabama, Owens was raised by his mother and grandmother and, according to Primm, has long been in need of a dominant male figure in his life.

"He's getting to be like my son," said Primm, who returned to his home in Georgia last week. He plans to return to Dallas in the next few days to be with Owens.

Owens "doesn't have many friends," said the trainer, who contends that the public and news media have long misperceived a man he considers "a gentle soul" and a "caring, highly sensitive" individual with a fragile psyche.

"He's a good person," Primm said. "A very good person."

Primm said he had been in touch with Owens and members of the player's inner circle on Wednesday. He said that after hearing the chronology of Tuesday's events, he understood why and how the incident took place and that suicide wasn't an issue.

Before arriving at the Cowboys' practice facility at Valley Ranch on Tuesday, Owens spent the morning addressing students at a local high school about the perils of domestic abuse and how it's not their fault should their parents choose to fight.

"It's an issue he cares about," Primm said.

Owens reported to the Cowboys' practice facility at 11:30 a.m. and worked out "hard," Primm said, catching "bullets" from quarterbacks Drew Bledsoe and Tony Romo for the first time since last week's surgery on his broken right hand.

And for the first time since the surgery, Owens felt serious pain, the trainer said, noting that until Tuesday night, Owens had not been on a regular routine of taking pain medication "because he hadn't needed to."

The receiver left Valley Ranch around 4 p.m. Tuesday and drove home in rush-hour traffic, arriving at his Exposition Park loft around 5:30 p.m.

That's when the physical trauma began.

At Primm's direction, Owens had been taking about 30 supplements a day, up from his normal six, "to accelerate the healing process," the trainer said. The supplements included "all different types of calcium, all different types of magnesium ... a few different types of glandulars," Primm said. "Things for the immune system, to get blood to that area."

He said he had also been using a $40,000 laser device on Owens' injury.

"Five minutes on the bottom of the hand, five minutes on the top" first thing in the morning, Primm said. That had accelerated the healing process, he said, in addition to another device about the size of a breadbox, into which Owens inserted a gloved hand wrapped in a towel to help "dissolve scar tissue."

Primm said that under normal circumstances, the machine designed to remove scar tissue "just knocks you out. It makes you sleepy."

He said the machine has the dual effect of "getting rid of scar tissue and of cells the body isn't using." Such therapy is vital, he said, in allowing bones to heal as rapidly as possible.

It was Primm who introduced Owens to such devices and to the hyperbaric chamber, which he said enabled the athlete to play in Super Bowl XXXIX in February 2005 for the Philadelphia Eagles, despite suffering a broken leg only weeks before.

But the combination of this week's events was apparently too much, the trainer said.

As for what comes next, Primm predicts that Owens will play Sunday against the Tennessee Titans. And how will he fare for the rest of the season?

"Great," the trainer said.

IRVING, Texas (AP) -- Stretching, running routes and catching passes, Terrell Owens was back at practice with the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday -- an indication he could play Sunday in Tennessee.

Owens wore receiving gloves with bandages under the right one to protect the broken bone leading to his ring finger. He broke it in a game a week ago Sunday and had a plate screwed in the following day. This was his first practice in pads since.

Pain pills prescribed following the surgery were at the root of what Owens called a big misunderstanding that unfolded between the time he was taken by ambulance to an emergency room Tuesday night until he was released Wednesday. Owens gave his side of the story at an afternoon news conference.

"It was just an allergic reaction," Owens said. "It's very unfortunate for the reports to go from an allergic reaction to a definite suicide attempt."

Much of the confusion stemmed from a police report that reached media outlets Wednesday morning, before sections about a possible suicide attempt, drug overdose and depression were blacked out. None of that was visible once it was officially released, prompting Owens' publicist -- who was the person that called 911 -- to lash out at authorities.

"I am just upset that I just feel they take advantage of Terrell," she said. "Had this been someone else, this may not have happened."

Authorities did not immediately respond, citing privacy laws, but on Thursday the president of the Dallas Police Association -- which represents Dallas police officers -- demanded an apology from T.O. and his publicist.

"The officers reacted because they were called to this location to do this job. Now they're being put under a microscope by some fancy little football person," Senior Cpl. Glenn White said. "Give me a break. Those officers are 10 times better than this man."

Publicist Kim Etheredge could not immediately be reached for a response. The voice mail on her cell phone was full, and she did not respond to an e-mail from The Associated Press.

According to Owens, the problems began when he mistakenly mixed his prescription pills with supplements he ordinarily takes.

The combination left him woozy, and Etheredge, who was with him at his Dallas condo, became worried when he couldn't respond to her questions. Having also discovered an empty bottle of pills, she called for help.
The unreleased police report stated that a suicide attempt was called in, that Owens was described as being depressed and that Owens said he was trying to harm himself.

Owens made it to team headquarters in time to catch some passes from quarterbacks Drew Bledsoe and Tony Romo. He then showed up to a packed news conference wearing workout gear and his usual wide smile.

T.O. seemed more amused than peeved. He apologized for being a distraction, thanked his friends for worrying about him and said he is "not depressed by any means."

"I am very happy to be here," said Owens, who received a $25 million, three-year deal from the Cowboys in March, four days after the Eagles released him. "My thing is I have come here to help this team get on a roll, get on the track of getting into the playoffs and winning some ballgames."

He's especially eager to play a week from Sunday, when Dallas plays at Philadelphia, offering him his first chance to beat the team that gave up on him midway through last season.

Owens has been stirring things up for years, from in-your-face touchdown celebrations to mean-spirited comments about his quarterbacks and cries of being underpaid. Yet the drama was always about football, never matters of life or death.

The police report, which WFAA shared with the AP, said rescue workers were called because Owens attempted "suicide by prescription pain medication."

"The rumor of me taking 35 pills, I think is absurd," Owens said. "I don't think I would be here if I had taken 35 pills."

Owens said a bottle of hydrocodone, a generic form of Vicodin, was indeed empty, but the extra pills were in a drawer. He said he had taken two or three, along with some all-natural supplements, and he believes the combination made him groggy.

"This is a very strong human being," Etheredge said. "When I ask him a question and he is not responding and I know he is not feeling well, I used my judgment to call 911."

The report said Etheredge saw Owens pop two more pills, then "attempted to put her fingers in (Owens') mouth to retrieve the pills."

"I did not take anything out of his mouth," said Etheredge, equally adamant in denying that she told anyone Owens was depressed.

Owens is listed in the report as saying, "Yes," when asked whether he'd emptied the pill bottle and whether he was trying to harm himself. He said he doesn't know what he told emergency responders.

"I was kind of out of it," Owens said.

Police group upset with statement by T.O.'s publicist

DALLAS (AP) -- The president of the Dallas Police Association demanded Thursday that Terrell Owens and his publicist apologize for statements disputing portions of a police report related to the star receiver's trip to a hospital emergency room.

"These officers, contrary to what Mr. T.O. Owens and his publicist Miss Etheredge alluded to or insinuated or whatever, those officers out there did the job they were supposed to do and did a good job of it," said Senior Cpl. Glenn White, who leads the largest police employee group in the Dallas department with more than 3,500 active and retired members. "We police officers don't go out to these calls and make stuff up."

Owens spent Tuesday night in the hospital after what he later called a big misunderstanding, saying he became groggy after mixing painkillers with supplements. The police report, later redacted in part, referenced an attempted suicide.

Owens' publicist who made the 911 call, Kim Etheredge, said Wednesday that entries in the police report were inaccurate. She said she did not say he was depressed and "did not take anything out of his mouth," as the report said.

Owens said he could not remember what he said to officers.

Etheredge couldn't be reached Thursday because her phone mailbox was full, and she didn't immediately respond to an e-mail seeking comment.

Dallas police officials have declined to comment and calls to Police Chief David Kunkle's office weren't returned Thursday. On Wednesday, police released a heavily-edited version of the police report but declined to discuss it further because of privacy concerns.

"It's a shame that the department doesn't stand up for the officers and say they did everything right," White said. "They haven't, and that's my biggest gripe now."

IRVING, Texas (AP) -- Dallas police have classified Terrell Owens' case as an "accidental overdose," not an attempted suicide, closing their investigation Thursday of the Cowboys receiver's hospitalization.

Police Chief David Kunkle said he had "great confidence" in the initial police report, which said rescue workers responded late Tuesday night to an attempted "suicide by prescription pain medication."

"The report, in my opinion, reflects what the officers were told and represents their best interpretation of what happened," Kunkle said Thursday. "But that doesn't mean it's the definitive account of the incident. Like all these situations, we're dealing with incomplete information and facts that change."

The report, obtained by media outlets Wednesday, said a friend described Owens as being depressed and indicated that Owens said "Yes" when rescue workers asked whether he had tried to harm himself.

Owens said Wednesday he mistakenly mixed the painkillers for a broken hand with supplements he ordinarily takes, causing him to become groggy while at home Tuesday evening. His publicist, Kim Etheredge, called 911, and Owens was taken by ambulance to an emergency room.

Within two hours of his hospital release Wednesday morning, Owens was catching passes at team headquarters. He went through a full practice Thursday, his first since breaking his right hand on Sept. 17, and might play Sunday in Tennessee.

At a news conference Wednesday, Owens denied the strongest parts of the police report, and Etheredge lashed out at authorities, saying, "I am just upset that I just feel they take advantage of Terrell. Had this been someone else, this may not have happened."

Earlier Thursday, the president of the Dallas Police Association, which represents Dallas police officers, demanded an apology from T.O. and his publicist.

"The officers reacted because they were called to this location to do this job. Now they're being put under a microscope by some fancy little football person," Senior Cpl. Glenn White said. "Give me a break. Those officers are 10 times better than this man. ... We police officers don't go out to these calls and make stuff up."

Reports of an empty pill bottle is a good example of the difference between what officers were told and the story that emerged later. The report indicated that 35 pills were unaccounted for; Owens later said that Etheredge became concerned when she saw an empty bottle, but she didn't know that the medicine was in a drawer.

"There was initially a belief of more (pills) that he might have taken," Kunkle said. "Further investigation leads you to a different conclusion."

Kunkle said at his news conference that Owens and Etheredge were welcome to file a report against the officers if they believe anyone acted inappropriately.

"There's no reason for the officers to do anything inappropriate," he added.

Etheredge could not immediately be reached for a response. The voice mail on her cell phone was full, and she did not respond to an e-mail from The Associated Press.

Although Owens looked fine in practice, Cowboys coach Bill Parcells said he might not decide until Saturday morning whether Owens makes the trip to Tennessee, and he'll probably wait until that night to determine whether to use him in the game.

Parcells wants to evaluate all the medical information he can get. That includes details about Owens' broken hand and possibly a mental evaluation. Owens is expected to practice again Friday.

"I have to, as the coach, rely on other people to keep me informed as to really what's going on," Parcells said. "I can't form my own independent opinion other than those involving, `Is his hand functional and can he play on Sunday?' If my medical people tell me those things are in place, and then he looks like he's (OK), we'll make that consideration then."

He pointed to the fact that Owens was released from the hospital after being checked out there.

"If they deemed it appropriate to release him, there must be a reason why they did that," he said.

Owens wore receiving gloves Thursday with bandages under the right one to protect the hand bone he broke in a game a week ago Sunday. A metal plate was screwed into the bone the following day.

"He was running fine," backup quarterback Tony Romo said. "I thought he caught the ball pretty good. I expect him to be ready to go this weekend."

Said fellow receiver Sam Hurd: "I asked him how he felt and he said, `I feel good to go. All good.' He didn't say nothing about his hand hurting."

Owens declined to speak with reporters, saying he did his talking Wednesday. But he sure was visible while media was allowed in the locker room.

Wearing a small bandage over the scar on his right hand, and a black T-shirt that read "U Big Dummy" above a picture of TV character Fred Sanford, Owens walked into the locker room, sat on a sofa and unwrapped his lunch, then decided to take it into an adjacent, off-limits dining area.

When he returned, Owens shooed away reporters, then Owens went back to the same spot on the sofa where he'd been before. He grabbed a copy of the Cowboys Weekly newspaper to occupy his time.

Among the articles that caught his attention: "Young Receivers Have Opportunity To Step Up After Broken Finger Sidelines Owens," and a scouting report of the Eagles, next week's foe.
