(CNN) -- Two schools were evacuated Wednesday after a gunman claiming to have a bomb opened fire and took hostages at a high school near Bailey, Colorado, officials said.

Several shots were fired at the school, and the gunman is inside, Jefferson County sheriff's spokeswoman Jacki Kelley said.

The gunman was holding two hostagesin a second-floor classroom, said Kelley. Six hostages were initially taken, but four of them were released, she said.

The gunman told police he had a bomb, said Lance Clem, spokesman for the Colorado Public Safety Department.

Kelley said she did not know if the hostages were students, teachers or both. However, both are female, she said. She had no information on injuries, but said a bomb squad, SWAT team and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives had been dispatched to the scene.

Negotiations with the gunman were ongoing but "sporadic," Kelley said.

The Park County Sheriff's office would not provide further details, but said it is dealing with a hostage situation. Bailey is located in Park County, and Jefferson County authorities are assisting in the investigation.

The lack of information from police and the school system was concerning parents who have children at the school, according to the Denver Post.

"We've had no phone calls from the district. We don't know what's going on," said Pat Bramelette, who has two children, one attending the high school, one in middle school.

His wife, Susan, told the newspaper, "The most I got was off the bottom of the TV screen."

Sally Impson told the Denver Post that she hopes her 17-year-old son, Andrew, will find a way to contact her, although his cell phone doesn't work in the school and the road to the school is shut down.

"I'm so shook," she said. "It's just scary. You don't know what's going on. You hear shots are fired. I hope to God that everything is OK."

The 450 students at Platte Canyon High School and the 340 youngsters at the adjacent Fitzsimmons Middle School were evacuated, officials said. The students were evacuated to a safe place about 12:10 p.m. (2:10 p.m. ET), the Park County School District superintendent's office said.

Bailey is about 45 miles southwest of Denver. It also lies about 40 miles southwest of Littleton, Colorado, which is where two students killed 13 people at Columbine High School in 1999.

UPDATES:
• Duane Morrison sent suicide note to family member in Colorado
• Police aware of rumors Morrison may have researched MySpace.com
• Police say the 53-year-old molested all his hostages
• Slain student, Emily Keyes, sent text message to family during siege

BAILEY, Colorado (CNN) -- The gunman who shot and killed a high school student after holding her and five other girls hostage had asked for students by name, a Colorado county sheriff said Friday.

Duane Morrison, who killed himself after fatally shooting Emily Keyes, 16, molested all six girls, said Park County Sheriff Fred Wegener. The sheriff didn't know "how much or to what degree."

Morrison had gone up to a male student and asked about the identities of "a list of female students," Wegener said. He didn't know which, if any, of the girls he took hostage in a classroom were on that list.

Investigators were aware of rumors that Morrison may have researched his victims on MySpace.com, an online community that allows users to post personal pages and network with friends, Wegener said.

Morrison shot Keyes in the head as she tried to escape when SWAT teams burst into the Platte Canyon High School classroom where he were holding her and one other student. He had released the other four students one at a time Wednesday afternoon.

Wegener has said he ordered the classroom raid to end the three-hour standoff after hearing Keyes and the other hostage screaming.

Morrison was using Keyes as a human shield when the officers stormed in, Joe Morales, executive director of Colorado's Department of Public Safety, told reporters Thursday. After shooting Keyes, he killed himself. He had written a suicide note and sent it to a family member who lives in Colorado. The sheriff said that note may yield clues about what led Morrison to Platte Canyon High School.

Authorities found a semi-automatic pistol and a revolver on Morrison's body. U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives had traced one of the guns to that relative in Colorado, Wegener said.

Keyes was taken by helicopter to a Denver hospital where she was pronounced dead.

On Thursday police released her photo and the last text message she had tapped out to her family as she was being held: "I love u guys." (Full story (http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/09/28/school.shooting/index.html))
