I checked on Raptors.com... all the pictures from the baseball game are of Chris Bosh.
All right already! He was there. He threw a great pitch. I get it. :lol
The TV broadcast of the game showed the Raptors a few times, but I don't know where there are any pictures. Sorry.

It's kind of strange the way the Raptors schedule is this week, with 3 days without a game. They got the day off of formal practice yesterday, although players still go in and work on their own stuff, then the baseball game last night. Today was back to work- Andrea went the whole practice- but then the party tonight. Last break before the push for the play-offs.

The Rebirth of the Raptors
By Anthony Smalls

April 12, 2007 -- Who knew?

The Toronto Raptors are headed to the playoffs for the first time in five years.

Who knew?

The 2006-07 Atlantic Division champions are, for the first time, the Toronto Raptors.

Who knew?

The Toronto Raptors have as good of a chance as any team in the Eastern Conference to advance to The Finals this year.

Who knew?

President and General Manager Bryan Colangelo did. And after what they have done this season, the rest of the league now knows, too.

Colangelo had a plan, and it has worked to perfection. He knew exactly what needed to be changed with the Raptors and was the one person who saw something that no one else could. He didn't hesitate to take on the challenge.

After 15 successful years with the Suns, Colangelo was hired by the Raptors in February of 2006. Just two seasons after being awarded the 2005 Sporting News Executive of the Year for engineering the third-greatest turnaround in NBA history when the Suns went from 29-53 to 62-20, Colangelo is up to his old tricks again in Toronto.

In a shorter amount of time, he has revived the team by keeping just six players from last season, transforming the Raptors to an up-tempo offense with international flair.

"Bryan Colangelo is one of the very best in the business,” Heat coach Pat Riley said. “He's got great experience. Once they got him away from Phoenix I think that sent a message to the players that they were serious about things.”

The savvy GM made four trades, acquiring point guard T.J. Ford from Milwaukee, forward Kris Humphries from Utah, center Rasho Nesterovic from San Antonio and, at the trading deadline, guard Juan Dixon from Portland. He also signed two free agents from Europe, forward Jorge Garbajosa and guard Anthony Parker, and made Andrea Bargnani the first European player selected with the first overall pick in the NBA Draft.

The transactions may not have sounded like much at the time, but those moves were essential to the Raptors' current success. With just one season under his belt and a great deal of salary cap room, one has to think that their future could to be even brighter.

Even though Colangelo is credited as the mastermind that assembled the team, head coach Sam Mitchell has managed to keep the team focused and driven throughout the season.

He was named the sixth head coach in Raptors franchise history on June 29, 2004. However, success was not immediate in his first two seasons; Toronto finished with a 33-49 record during the 2004-05 season and went 27-55 in 2005-06.

But Mitchell began laying the foundation of a more up-tempo style of play that has meshed seamlessly with the fun-and-run style Colangelo brought with him from Phoenix.

Of course it helps when you have an emerging superstar and All-Star forward, Chris Bosh, and a lightening-quick point guard, Ford, keeping the team's engine running at full throttle.

In just four seasons, Bosh has gone from the fourth pick in the 2003 NBA Draft to a franchise player to a starter in the NBA All-Star Game.

He is posting career highs with 22.8 points and 10.7 rebounds, and his play this season even has fans campaigning for him to win this year's MVP award.

“That's one of my goals that I want to attain in my career,” Bosh said. “I know I have a long way to go.”

He and Ford, who is also averaging career bests of 14.1 points and 7.9 assists, have helped rid the franchise of the negative mentality that seemed to linger over Air Canada Centre in recent years. But most importantly, they are sharing the ball and winning games.

“Last year we probably would get down by 20 and put our heads down and that's a wrap,” Bosh said. “That's the thing I like about this team. We keep our eyes on the prize. He (Ford) came to me and I came to him and we were like, ‘Look, as we go, the team goes and we have to take on that type of attitude.’”

The duo has taken the team from a 2-8 start to its current 45-33 record.

Nevertheless, two men do not make a team.

Bargnani has been compared to MVP candidate Dirk Nowitzki of the Dallas Mavericks. He is a good scorer and has accuracy from long range. Before undergoing an appendectomy on March 21, 2007, he was scoring at an 11.5 points per game clip.

Garbajosa, a Spanish Cup Finals MVP for two consecutive years, signed as a free agent last July. He also led Unicaja to the Spanish ACB regular-season championship and helped lead Spain to the 2006 FIBA World Championship along with current Raptor teammate, Jose Calderon. Garbajosa was averaging 8.5 ppg and 4.9 rpg when he suffered a displaced left ankle and fractured fibula on March 27, 2007.

Despite being injured, Bargnani and Garbajosa, who were selected to the 2007 T-Mobile Rookie Challenge during All-Star weekend, are both in the running for Rookie of the Year award.

Parker, a two-time Euroleague MVP, has won five Israeli Premier League championships, five Israeli Cups and three Euroleague titles and has had stints with the Philadelphia 76ers and Orlando Magic. As a Raptor, he brings a winning attitude and one of the league's most accurate 3-point shooting touches -- he ranks sixth in the league at 43.6 percent.

Nesterovic brings championship experience from his days as a member of the 2005 San Antonio Spurs.

Collectively, the aforementioned group, along with Calderon, Dixon, Humphries, Morris Peterson, Joey Graham, Darrick Martin, Pape Sow, Uros Slokar and Luke Jackson, have led the Raptors' revival.

But who knew?

What's up everybody! This year has been a great year so far and I'm enjoying it a lot. The city of Toronto is really excited and playoff fever is back. It makes me feel really good because the years in the past for me and the team has been a struggle, but that's behind us now. The best thing I like about it all is that we have a team made up of great guys. That makes it a lot easier to work and have fun.

I know that I seem like a quiet guy to a lot of people, but I'm actually not. I like to talk and I've been told I'm funny. That actually surprises people because I come off as a shy person most of the time.

I love basketball, but when I'm not playing I like to chill at home a lot too. I have every gaming system out right now, but my favorite is the XBOX 360. If I'm not doing that I'm on my computer. I'm kind of a computer geek. I'm always surfing the internet, reading, or downloading stuff. I'm also working on my website, www.chris-bosh.com, all the time. Me and my friend are revamping the whole thing.

I'm going to have a lot of cool stuff to check out. It's a chance for people to see what I'm like of the court. I have a Podcast called Max 'n' out too! Me and a radio personality named Devo Brown are on it just talking about current events, entertainment, movies, etc.

You should check out www.chris-bosh.com when you get the chance. I also like to read books. I try to read at least one or two a month. Right now I'm reading a book called the 48 Laws of power. It's a tough read because it's like 500 pages. I'm halfway through it so hopefully I'll be done soon.

Well, that's about it for now. I'll be back to tell you about my first playoff game. I'm really excited about it and I'm looking forward to it. Y'all be cool!!!!

Salami, Cheese ,and Onions--

OK. Chuck Swirsky, who calls the Raptors games on TV, had this story. Let's hope that I get it right. Some fan told him that he is so nervous during the games that he can't eat. He wanted to know at what point the game was in the bag, and he could bring out the salami and cheese to eat. So, Chuck started this thing when the game looks like it is sewn up, he says- bring out the Salami and Cheese, Mama! It has become such a thing that even now players willl ask about it. One game there was about a minute to go and Kris Humphries, I think, was walking past the table and stopped and asked Chuck- have you brought out the salami and cheese, yet? As to the onions- when someone hits a big shot or does something clutch, Chuck says he's got onions, baby, onions. Hope that makes sense. Maybe someday you will get to see a game on Raptors coverage.

Mitchell Silencing Critics

(TORONTO) -- These are the salad days for Sam Mitchell.

After the Raptors struggled to a 2-8 start and showed few early signs of improvement, Mitchell, 43, was on top of everybody’s most-like to get fired list. A decline in wins to 27 from 33 in his first two seasons seemed to make the decision easy.

But a funny thing happened on the way to the execution. The Raptors have won 43 of their last 67 games to grab first place in the Atlantic Division. They are 12 games over .500 and boast candidates for executive of the year in GM Bryan Colangelo, most valuable player in Chris Bosh, rookie of the year in Andrea Bargnani and yes, coach of the year, in the very same Sam Mitchell.

“I’d be disappointed if he didn’t get it,” Colangelo told local media this week.

“I appreciate that, it’s very nice,” said Mitchell. “It’s always nice when your boss thinks highly of you and thinks you’re doing a good job.”

Colangelo is not alone. Under Mitchell, Bosh has grown from a kid with one year of college ball to a game-shaping big man and NBA all-star. The benefits of Mitchell’s often stern apprenticeship are on display nightly.

Mitchell unleashed T.J. Ford, who is enjoying by far his best NBA season and shrewdly deployed imports Anthony Parker, Jorge Garbajosa, Jose Calderon and Bargnani.

Most of all, Mitchell infused the Raptors with the court sense and toughness he garnered over 13 NBA seasons as a blue-collar favorite in Minnesota and Indiana.

“You learn,” he said. “The tough things about these jobs are you don’t get the opportunity to learn. I’m glad with all I’ve been through I’ve had the chance to learn from my mistakes and get better.”

Mitchell said there isn’t one single thing that has made him a better coach. Instead, a broad combination of experiences make him different.

“You learn how to communicate better. You learn when to back off, when to push, when to give them a day off, what to say to them. Even sometimes when we play bad, you just learn that sometimes you don’t need to talk about it. Just let it go.”

Rasho Nesterovic, the Raptors impish seven-footer, said Mitchell thrives on an attention to detail.

“He likes to control everything,” he said and “he really knows what the deal is on the court.”

Those who would count the club out after a slow start, Mitchell said, hadn’t considered the circumstances closely enough.

“I understood we were going to get better every month. The schedule was tough because of a West coast trip. I also understood that we had nine new players and we were getting better every day. Out of those nine new players, seven had never played significant (NBA) minutes before.”

The Raptors, Mitchell insisted, just needed time and points to the breakthrough sophomore season put together by guard Jose Calderon as proof.

“All the difference between Jose from this year and last year is that he has confidence and he believes that he belongs.”

Friday, the Raptors host Detroit, the number one seed in the East and the conference’s dominant power.

The Pistons represent a lofty challenge for the Raptors. Toronto is looking for its fifth consecutive win and there is something to be said for making out one’s territory, even though the Pistons have clinched and might be resting some regulars.

“This is one of the potential matchups later in the playoffs,” said Nesterovic. “We definitely have to play good against them to prove we are on the same level that they are.”

The Raptors don’t look to return Bargnani to the lineup for the Pistons game. Bargnani has missed 11 games after emergency surgery for an appendectomy but has contracted a case of the flu and has been in and out of practice.

“The chances of him playing are doubtful,” Mitchell said. “He practiced yesterday, didn’t practice today. Unless something happens between now and tomorrow, I don’t expect him (to play).”

David Stern Praises Raptors Success this Season

April 12, 2006

(Canadian Press) -- The Toronto Raptors got a shout-out from commissioner David Stern on Wednesday.

``The entire organization has rallied around (the team) and their marketing has been enormously effective, and it's great to see,'' Stern said in a conference call Wednesday from New York. ``They have a television network, they have the team succeeding, they're involved with soccer now (new MLS squad Toronto FC). I just think it's a terrific success story all around.

``I'm very proud of the entire organization.''

The Raptors have clinched the Atlantic Division for their first division title in franchise history. And with four games to go in the regular season, the Raptors (45-33) are battling for homecourt advantage for their first playoff appearance in five seasons.

Three more wins and the Raptors will set a franchise record for victories.

Stern had plenty of praise for the Raptors, singling out the squad in his opening remarks of his traditional pre-playoffs conference call with the media.

``It's just fun to see Toronto and Utah and Chicago, teams that have been playing very well of late, all of them enhanced and enriched by international contributions as well,'' Stern said.

The NBA commissioner credited both Raptors GM Bryan Colangelo and head coach Sam Mitchell for the team's turnaround this season.

``I think Bryan is an extraordinary basketball executive who is not afraid to take risks and who has a particular affinity for understanding and evaluating international players,'' said Stern.

``I think Sam Mitchell, who used to take advantage of me when he was negotiating collective bargaining agreements for the players association, is a very principled person and coach and his strong hand has also had a lot to do with the way that team has performed this year.''

The Raptors host the Detroit Pistons on Friday.

Raptors win. 5th straight, 8-2 in last 10 (will be 9-1 after they beat New York at home), 46th win. 29-10 at home, which includes 5-5 at the very bad beginning of the season (will be 30-10 after NY). This team is tough to beat at home.

That was an embarassing game, we had good looks in the first half, but kept bricking open shots. Having to make a 4th quarter comeback against the Pistons scrubs just to win is just a terrible way to win.

TORONTO (CP) -- Chris Bosh had 18 points and 16 rebounds to lift the Toronto Raptors 87-84 over the Eastern Conference rival Detroit Pistons on Friday night.

Anthony Parker finished with 21 points, while Joey Graham and T.J. Ford had 13 points apiece for the Raptors (46-33), who took another big step toward securing home-court advantage in the playoffs.

Kris Humphries grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds, for the Raptors, who rallied from a 15-point deficit in a final few dramatic minutes of a frenzied fourth quarter.

Richard Hamilton scored 24 points to top Detroit (51-28).

Detroit had already clinched the East's best record with Wednesday's 104-99 win over Orlando. But in a battle of teams that could eventually meet in the post-season, the Pistons certainly weren't mailing in this game _ despite the absence of Chauncey Billups, who didn't dress.

The Pistons took the lead midway through the first and barely looked back, taking a 69-58 advantage into the fourth.

The Raptors rallied in the fourth, using a 17-4 run to take their first lead since early in the quarter. Parker gave the Raptors the lead in dramatic fashion, hitting a three-pointer as the shot-clock sounded to put the home team up 81-79 with 1:44 left, bringing the capacity crowd of 19,800 _ the 17th sellout of the season _ to its feet.

With the Raptors holding onto a one-point lead, Ford stole the ball, then scored on a running jump shot with 12 seconds left. Hunter threw up an air ball on the Pistons' final possession and that was the game.

With three contests remaining, the Raptors, who've won 10 of their last 12 games, have already locked up their first playoff spot in five seasons and first division title in franchise history. It's all about securing home-court advantage now for the post-season, and the Raptors need to finish ahead of the Miami Heat for that to happen. A Miami loss Friday to Indiana would give Toronto homecourt.

The Raptors, who need just two more wins to set a franchise record, shot 37 per cent but outrebounded the Pistons 52-47.

The Raptors raced out to an 8-0 lead but it was short-lived, plagued by poor shooting. They shot just 32 per cent in the first and the Pistons took a 20-14 lead into the second.

The second was more of the same as Detroit, shooting 48 per cent in the first half, stretched its lead to 15 points midway through the quarter. The Pistons were up 50-37 at halftime.

The Raptors ate away at the Pistons' lead in the third, a jumper by Juan Dixon cutting it to five points with 1:36 left. But consecutive three-pointers by Hamilton to end the quarter put the Pistons up 69-58 heading into the fourth.

NOTES: Vince Carter's mom Michelle was seated courtside. . . The Raptors' No. 1 draft pick rookie, Andrea Bargnani, is expected to play Sunday when Toronto hosts New York. The forward has missed 12 games after undergoing an appendectomy. . . Jorge Garbajosa got a standing ovation when he was shown on the Jumbotron. The Raptors forward was making his first appearance on the team bench since suffering a season-ending ankle injury March 26.

Raptors played in the first half like a team that hadn't played in four days- and had been to a baseball game and a cocktail party fundraiser! Oh wait, ...

While a shallow victory over the Pistons bench, at this point a victory is a victory and helps to secure that 3rd spot.

And Anthony Parker is the secret weapon for the play-offs!

Bosh was subpar (amongst others) today, but you wouldn't know it by looking at the numbers.

I'm telling you, 2-3 years and Bosh will be top 3 player in the league (Reggie Miller already thinks he's top 5).

Together in Toronto and Having a Few Laughs

Sam Mitchell tossed perfect spirals toward his starting point guard, T. J. Ford, who dropped one to the hoots of teammates and coaches lingering in the Toronto Raptors’ practice gym last week. Mitchell then punted the football to the ceiling.

No matter that this is hockey-obsessed Canada, that Mitchell is the coach of the N.B.A.’s most improved team and that half of his players think of football as soccer. Such silly sporting juxtapositions seem perfectly natural to the Raptors; they were rebuilt to defy convention.

Players from six nations surround the selfless star Chris Bosh and the blustering but compassionate Mitchell, a third-year coach. (Mitchell, he will have you know, was a highly recruited high school tight end from Georgia before enjoying a productive 13-year career in the N.B.A.)

Somehow, these diverse personalities and voices (representing Italy, Spain, Slovenia, Senegal, Israel via Illinois and Texas) blend seamlessly rather than form a basketball Babel.

Returning to the playoffs after a five-year absence, the new-look Raptors — who share the ball as freely as they do jokes — may be the most refreshing team in the N.B.A.

In the same way that Bosh saw no contradiction in being selfless and a star, he embraced his team’s uncanny chemistry. “It’s not weird because it’s fun,” Bosh said in an interview Thursday. “I think every team should try it.”

But not every team has Bryan Colangelo as its architect. In the year since Colangelo arrived from Phoenix, where he had resurrected the Suns to win executive of the year honors, he has taken the right risks (under favorable conditions) to revive a moribund franchise in Toronto.

The change is obvious in the standings: The Raptors have won 19 more games than they did last season, the biggest jump of any N.B.A. team, and captured their first Atlantic Division title. The change is more subtle in Colangelo’s redesign of the locker room, his first step in conveying that this would be a first-class operation.

“I hope that the culture changed immediately when I got here back in March,” Colangelo said in an interview in his corner office at the Air Canada Center. “I think the perception was a cloud had been lifted off the Raptors. Everything across the board needed to be revamped.”

Not everything or everyone. Mitchell is still here. And now Colangelo wants him to stay.

Rather than firing a struggling and emotional Mitchell last season, Colangelo waited. Rather than give Mitchell an extension before the season, he vowed to discuss it only after the season. Rather than fire Mitchell as the Raptors started 2-8, Colangelo worked with him.

In trying to find comfort with the nine players Colangelo initially brought in, Mitchell was reluctant to give playing time to the No. 1 overall pick from Italy, the 7-footer Andrea Bargnani, or the free-agent forward Jorge Garbajosa of Spain.

After prodding from management, Mitchell grew more confident in them, and Bargnani responded with accurate shooting and aggressiveness befitting a rookie of the year. Garbajosa provided versatility and energy until he broke his leg and ankle last month.

The Raptors were able to stay afloat when Bosh missed 12 games in December with a knee injury. Now, despite losing Bargnani to an appendectomy last month (he may not return until next week because of minor illnesses), the Raptors have won eight of their last nine games.

Colangelo had been modest in his praise of Mitchell, but last week he applauded him publicly for the first time as worthy of coach-of-the-year honors. When asked if Mitchell was worthy of an extension, Colangelo smiled and offered his strongest backing yet.

“I have every intention to keep Sam Mitchell,” Colangelo said.

Mitchell waved off questions about the extension, saying it violated his team-first mantra. “I’ve been asking all these guys to make sacrifices,” Mitchell said after “football” practice. “Now that we’re winning, I’m going to jump up and down and say, ‘I want mine now’? If I do my job, in return, I’ll get taken care of.”

Mitchell may have tripled his market value and will be in demand for coaching vacancies elsewhere. It is apparent that while Mitchell still rides players hard, they respect him and he feels comfortable with this group.

“I love coming to practice, I love being on the bus with them,” he said. “This team is special because we’re winning.”

Or are the Raptors winning because they are special? Having players with international experience lends a more mature perspective, said guard Anthony Parker, who starred for five seasons with Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Now better known as the brother of the Tennessee star Candace Parker, he said he was grateful to Colangelo for bringing him to the N.B.A. at age 31. (Colangelo created a buyout when his contract did not have one.)

“You realize that this is a privilege to play here, not a right,” said Parker, who wears 18 on his jersey, the number that symbolizes life in Hebrew.

The mind-set of a European player, Colangelo said, tends to be different because basketball is taught with more of a team emphasis than in the United States. But that was not the sole reason for the Raptors’ foreign influx.

Maurizio Gherardini, the Raptors’ assistant general manager, who was the top basketball executive in Italy, said, “I think that the decision was based on what we needed, on the players’ talent and what we perceived of their ability to melt into a group, not necessarily because of what was on their passport.” Colangelo hired Gherardini, who was Bargnani’s boss as Benetton Treviso’s general manager, to be the N.B.A.’s first senior executive from Europe, giving the Raptors an advantage in the expanding international market.

Colangelo credits the former Raptors general manager Rob Babcock for signing point guard José Calderón from Spain. It was Calderón who helped persuade Garbajosa, his national team teammate, to go to Toronto, selling him on the city’s cosmopolitan nature and on the ease of playing with Bosh.

“He’s like one of us,” Calderón said. “We love him. That’s the best thing about this team: We love everybody. Everybody knows their role.”

Rasho Nesterovic, from Slovenia, acquired in a trade last summer with San Antonio, is the old soul in the locker room, while Ford is seemingly the origin of all team jokes.

After Colangelo acquired Ford in an off-season trade with Milwaukee, he gave him a contract extension, perhaps one reason Ford has played so fast and loose this season.

Ford’s breakout season, combined with Bosh’s emergence as a franchise player, has helped make the Raptors’ offense one of the more dangerous ones. The backup guard Juan Dixon also gives the Raptors more firepower. He was acquired when Colangelo jettisoned the disappointing Fred Jones to Portland by getting Jones to waive the final year of his deal to go home to Oregon.

Two advance scouts described Toronto’s offensive sets as simple yet finely executed. Still, the Raptors are the N.B.A.’s fourth-worst rebounding team and their weak team defense could hurt them in the playoffs.

A victory Friday over Detroit, which had clinched the top spot in the East, showed they are nearing the elite. Morris Peterson, the only remaining player from the Raptors’ 2002 playoff season, credited Colangelo for the turnaround. “Even though we weren’t winning, he gave us a new sense of hope,” Peterson said.

Isiah Thomas, the Knicks’ coach and general manager and Toronto’s first general manager, also played a role. By taking Jalen Rose from the Raptors last February (Wayne Embry made the trade as interim general manager) for Antonio Davis, Thomas saved Toronto $17 million. The flexibility helped entice Colangelo to take the job because he had cap room to sign Bosh to a long-term contract and lure free agents.

The Knicks and the Raptors meet tonight in Toronto, going in decidedly different directions. That hit home for Bosh when he attended the team’s season-ending party for loyal fans Wednesday. “It used to be called the RapUp party and we were wrapping up the season,” Bosh said. “We had three games left and it didn’t go past there.”

Now, Bosh realized with a grin, the real party has just begun.

TORONTO A+
The sum of this team is much greater than its components. Kudos to Sam Mitchell for integrating nine new players into a well-balanced ball club. He masterfully apportioned playing time so as to maximize the strengths of Chris Bosh, T.J. Ford, Andrea Bargnani, and Jorge Garbajosa, and to minimize their considerable weaknesses. He appreciated the subtle value of Anthony Parker, and coaxed unexpected mileage from Rasho Nesterovic.

Forget about sentimentalism (Jerry Sloan) and automatic repeats (Avery Johnson). Sam Mitchell is hands down the Coach of the Year.

Now the bad news: Andrea's sinus infection must be pretty bad. He probably won't play until Wednesday.

And the good news: Luke Jackson has signed for the rest of this season and NEXT! :)

Luke Jackson, signed by the Raptors on Saturday for the remainder of the season plus the 2007-08 season, has done a bit of travelling around in his three seasons, and says Canada's lone NBA franchise had a distinctly different atmosphere than he's experienced on other teams.

"I've seen superstars all over the league, and I don't think there's any classier guy than Chris Bosh. . . the way he handles himself in the locker-room and on the court," said Jackson. "It really surprised me (arriving in Toronto), just the group of guys, how they treat everybody. I think this is a first-class organization, and I really mean that."

Jackson spent time with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Clippers, then the Idaho Stampede of the National Basketball Development League before joining the Raptors initially on a 10-day deal on March 25.

The one negative from an upbeat Raptors practice Saturday was the absence of prized rookie Andrea Bargnani. The big Italian was originally expected to play his first game Sunday after missing 12 following an appendectomy. But he's been suffering from the flu for most of the week.

"He's still feeling poorly," said Mitchell."Hopefully we can get him through a couple of workouts Monday and Tuesday and play him Wednesday (regular-season finale versus Philadelphia)."

The Raptors sorely need a healthy Bargnani for the playoffs. With his accuracy from three-point range, he's a headache as a bigman to guard and helps spread the floor. And he can spell off Bosh, who's been logging major minutes in his absence.

But how much he can contribute after such a lengthy layoff - not to mention, he's returning at a time when the intensity of the games will be shifting into high gear - remains to be seen.

"Obviously we need him, and that's concerning that he may not be as sharp as he was before he had the appendicitis and then got sick," said Mitchell. "But what can you do? Nobody tries to get hurt or sick, it's unfortunate that it happened at this time of year but that's how it is sometimes."

Raptors prove doubters wrong (http://www.tsn.ca/nba/news_story/?ID=204157&hubname=nba)

Yes, Malik played very well. He did a very good job defending Bosh- probably from all that practice against TD in SA.

Raptors clinch the # 3 seed and home court in the first round. They also tie a franchise record 47 wins! Rasho has never played on an NBA team that has won fewer than 47 games. :D

Ugly, ugly second quarter again. Great game from Jose. Graham played and tied his career best in points even though he was sick.

What's with Bosh? PFs aren't supposed to be shooting free throws like that.

Honestly, Bosh should drive on every posession (when he isn't double teammed). Nobody can stay in front of him, so it's a guaranteed foul.

April 15, 2007

(TORONTO) -- Jorge Garbajosa was back at his locker, Sunday night, taking calls from visitors in the media for the first time since a shocking leg injury, March 28.

Garbajosa was injured late in a game against the Boston Celtics when he lunged at a player and his full 245 pounds came down on his leg.

Garbajosa said he no longer feels any pain from the dislocated left ankle joint injury which was set in Boston before surgery the next day in Toronto.

As for the play, there are no regrets there either.

“I did what I had to,” Garbajosa said yesterday. “I was doing my job. I think anyone would do the same.”

The prognosis of a return, about six months from the time of the injury, hasn’t changed for the 29-year-old Spanish rookie.

“The first week is hard,” he said. “You are wondering what happened to you, but now I am just trying to be positive. This is what happened. Now what can I do to come back as soon as possible? I have to be ready and I have to be positive."

He expects to shed his cast from four to six weeks and begin his rehab in earnest then.

In the meantime, Garbajosa, a starter in 60 of his 67 games who contributed an average of 8.5 points and 4.9 rebounds a night, will follow the club, often in person.

“You have to be in this locker room to know what is going on, to feel what kind of relationship we have with each other,” Garbajosa said. “The first thing I wanted to do was come here and see my teammates. I love them. When the injury happened, they were coming to my home to see how I was, calling me, sending me messages. I can say that they are more than my teammates, they are my friends.”

As for videotape of the injury, Garbajosa has seen it…once.

“I saw it the night I was in Boston. At the hospital it was on TV. I knew everyone was going to ask about it and I preferred to know. I’m not going to watch it any more.”

Garbajosa remains positive (http://www.nba.com/raptors/news/ulmergarbo_041507.html)

After a couple of weeks on the couch, Garbajosa is now able to sit on the team bench for games, and is at the Air Canada Centre every morning to receive treatment and lift some light weights. He hopes to be able to travel with the team through their playoff run.

His Raptors teammates, who presented him with a PlayStation game console and a team picture signed by all the players in his first appearance back at the ACC, have been a constant source of support. Jose Calderon, his good friend and teammate on the Spanish national squad, even took him out for his first spin in his wheelchair a couple of weeks ago.

Raps would outrebound them 1000 to 10.

Raps will put AP on Vince, our fast PGs on slow Kidd, and beast Graham will lock Jefferson down.

Now how will Nets defend Toronto? Vince can't even defend air. Richard can barely defend fart. Mikki more will get raped by Bosh. Kidd will get raped by TJ.

Nets will win 1 (or MAAYBE 2 games) if Vince has a ridiculous scoring night with a decent FG%.

Considering who the Raptors suited up, I was actually pretty happy with tonight's game. They only had 10 guys total and 2 starters. The makeshift starting line-up that included someone who was in the NBDL 6 weeks ago held their own in the first quarter against the Detroit starters and again in the third.

On a side note, Nazr was just plain awful- even against the Raptor scrubs who never play. Nazr played 12 minutes and had 3 fouls, 1 rebound, and shot 1-6.

Rasho had a nice little game there tonight. Anyone who talks about taking away Rasho's minutes has not watched much Raptors play this season.

So, the first round opponent is decided tomorrow. If Washington can beat Indiana and the Bulls beats the Nets- it is Washington.

I'd give him all of Humphries minutes, and some of Rasho's.

Slokar's not a C, he's a PF. He's not strong enough to play C. He was stuck behind Bosh, Bargnani and Garbajosa all season, and with the team needing wins at the end, coach probably didn't wan't to risk putting a new player into rotation.
He has some nice skills, not just the jumper - he can play with his back to the basket too and his rebounding is pretty good. He's also smart, learns quick and is a good character. He lacks strength and athleticism though. Unfortunatelly being a poor man's Bargnani doesn't cut it when the team has the real one.
On the plus side: Slokar is a FA after this season. That's why i was happy he was signed this year - with Bosh and Bargnani on the team, he could be stuck in Europe for ages with Toronto sitting on his rights. This way at least he got some experience and a chance to showoff some of his talent and now he can sign with any team.

Pistons 100, Raptors 84:

For almost everyone, the game in Auburn Hills, Mich., was nothing more than a glorified exhibition. For Raptors rookie Uros Slokar, though, it was the chance of a lifetime.

With both teams tuning up for the playoffs, the little-used Slovenian, who had 20 career points in 19 games, scored 18 points in 30 minutes.

"I've been waiting all year for a chance like this," he said. "For me, every game might be my last, so I have to prove to someone that I can play. That went pretty well tonight."

TORONTO) -- It’s a modest enough banner, a patch of cloth hanging in the corner of Air Canada Centre but to players, management and fans, it might as well be dipped in gold.

The franchise’s first ever division title banner was unveiled Wednesday as a cloth cornerstone for the future. It is as visible a talisman as any to demonstrate that the Raptors are ready to ascend to the league elite.

“You look where we are and a lot of people who doubted us they just have to look at that banner,” said veteran Raptor Morris Peterson, the only player around when the team last appeared in the post-season.

“A lot of people who said we’d never get as far as we are now, they will have to look at that banner and they’ll have to think about that every time.”

“Toronto has always had great fans throughout our franchise history,” Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Ltd. CEO Richard Peddie. “Thanks to a total team effort by Bryan Colangelo, Wayne Embry, Sam Mitchell, the players and all the employees that make up Team Raptors we now have a way to say thanks to those fans for sticking with us.”

It was a simple thank-you, delivered, fittingly on fan appreciation night. “As a token of our appreciation for you coming out tonight,” Raptors star Chris Bosh told a darkened arena, “we want to show you something,” and pointed to the rafters.

A couple of fireworks later, a banner bearing the words Atlantic Division Champions was unfurled amidst rapturous applause.

“When you look at building a history, in the word history is the word story,” said president and GM Bryan Colangelo. “We’ve got a story that’s writing itself right now. You want to put up reminders of successes along the way. There’s been a lot of exciting basketball played here, but given the rebirth of the franchise and where we are today, we felt it was fitting to begin a new story and put the first of what we hope will be many banners up.”

“The players should be proud,” said coach Sam Mitchell. ”Obviously, we want to advance (in the playoffs) but you have to start building a winning tradition somewhere and to be the first team to win a divisional title, I think it means a lot.” Peterson, a seven-year-Raptor veteran, said the banner would be an inspiration.

“That’s going to push us even harder. We put one banner up even though people didn’t believe we could. We can put more banners up in front of people who didn’t believe in us.”

“That’s going to push us even harder. We put one banner up even though people didn’t believe we could. We can put more banners up in front of people who didn’t believe in us.”

Word. I believe. :)

Great picture of Sho. :)

If the Raps contain Carter, they should be fine. Jefferson has looked like crap since his return, and Kidd can only do so much.

Mikki Moore has been pretty good (20 pts tonight), and Boki is a 3-point machine. They gotta watch them too.

Down 85-82 with seconds left on the clock and possession of the ball, Childs mistakenly thought his team was down by 4 points, instead of 3. He immediately sprinted past half-court and attempted to draw a foul on an off-balance 3-point shot, rather than passing to a wide-open Delly Curry. The Raptors subsequently lost the series, and Grunwald subsequently forgot to resign Childs.

However, his second tenure with the Nets was disastrous, as he was suspended by the team for being overweight and out-of-shape at the beginning of the season.

In 2002, Childs also made the news when he was robbed at gunpoint in an incident at a Manhattan nightclub owned by Sean "P. Diddy" Combs. He allegedly lost over $30,000 in jewelery and cash.

What a wonderful experience for Rasho. When he got traded, Rasho talked about how excited he was about this new challenge. Raptors proved many doubters wrong.

Slokar (http://www.courant.com/sports/hc-nbaup0418.artapr18,0,3357225.story?coll=hc-headlines-sports)

Holy cow! I can't believe I missed this last night. Uros was awesome-

18 points ( 7 of 10 from the field; 1 of 1 from three range :clap; 3 of 4 from free throw) 3 rebounds, and a steal

Probably Saturday afternoon in the crappiest time slot- especially if they play the Wizards. Game 2 can't be Monday night as the ACC is booked, so it could be Saturday and Tuesday- not confirmed.

I think game 2 should be on different nights, but the Raptors could end up on NBA-TV for game 2, again depending on whom they play.

Confirmed:

Game 1 - Sat April 21 New Jersey at Toronto 12:30PM ESPN
Game 2 - Tue April 24 New Jersey at Toronto 7:00PM NBATV
Game 3 - Fri April 27 Toronto at New Jersey 7:00PM ESPN2
Game 4 - Sun April 29 Toronto at New Jersey 7:30PM TNT
Game 5 * Tue May 1 New Jersey at Toronto TBD
Game 6 * Fri May 4 Toronto at New Jersey TBD
Game 7 * Sun May 6 New Jersey at Toronto TBD

All times are Eastern.

At least they don't conflict with the Spurs for you Angel, but game 2 is on NBA-TV and game 3 is on ESPN 2. Even against the Nets, the Raptors still get the worst TV coverage.

I wanted to come this summer but had some financial set backs.

So my new plan:

Slovenia is going to qualify for the 2008 olympics and I am going to go see them play in Beijing ( my mom works and lives there so I have somewhere to stay).
Then I am going to go to Slovenia on my way home.
Is Slovenia on the way from the China to the US? Oh well, it will be for me. :lol

I would like to take this time to acknowledge how damn wrong I was about the Raps this season. Very early on in this thread, I stated that I believed Sam Mitchell would be the first coach fired and the Raptors would be a poor team for awhile.

I was wrong. The Raptors have become a good (and I like this) entertaining team. I am pulling for them to beat the Nets and make some noise so that Colangelo gets the credit he deserves for assembling a team that can morph into something real VERY soon.

Sam will still be the coach, I figure he'll get re-upped for two years, so I was wrong.

Garbajosa is my new favorite rookie foreigner and I'm hoping he can return to the player he was following his injury.

Go Raptors.

Maurizio Gherardini and a Slovenian Connection

It was like a little “Slovenian connection” here the other day.

Sixteen graduate students from the University of Maribor were visiting Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment trying to get a closer look to the marketing plans, the community programs, promotions and sports management side of the MLSEL business.

They also got to meet with Rasho Nesterovic and Uros Slokar and talk about their experience here: they were really excited as they took a picture with the two of them at centercourt .

Following the game, as we were talking about our next playoff opponent, New Jersey, we ended up realizing how another Slovenian, Bostjan “Boki” Nachbar, was going to cross our path soon, after playing a mayor role in the Nets’ season

I first saw Boki as a 16-year-old in an exhibition game at the “Ghirada” facilities at Benetton: we had invited two teams from the his hometown to play against our junior teams. The other prospect on the team was Sani Becirovic, a year younger than Bostjan, later drafted by Denver in the second round and today at the helm of the Panathinaikos team who will be playing in the Euroleague Final Four in a few days, one of the top combo-guards in Europe.

A year or so later the opportunity came to bring Boki to Benetton. I remember traveling to a small town right by the Slovenian border to meet with his father, Bostjan himself and his agent and try to convince them all that we, at Benetton, would have been the ideal option for his growth and development. It was already clear to me, as I had seen him again a few times in action after that very first game in Treviso, that he had all the tools needed to become a good player.

I liked him from the beginning as a person as well and I could feel that sort of a bond of trust developing as we were getting to know each other. He sounded very committed and you could feel his desire to succeed at the highest level.

In the beginning it was not easy for Bostjan in Treviso. As a matter of fact we decided to loan him to the team in Maribor for one season to let him play some minutes and gain confidence with his game. As he finally joined Benetton, he realized that it would not have been easy for him to find significant minutes on a winning team with a lot of good players.

But he was always patient, worked on his game all the time and smiled, even if he thought he could do more and play a bigger role. In his second last year, he came up to speak with me and tell me his concerns. It was a short conversation. I told him to be patient, to keep working, I thought he would be ready when the chance came: he nodded and always kept a smile on his face.

The next year, his final year with us, he was terrific. With Mike D’Antoni as a coach, we won the Italian Cup, the Italian Championship and reached the Euroleague Final Four. Boki’s patience had been rewarded and the NBA dream was becoming a real one.

And his NBA career has somehow been similar to the one in Treviso. He has been with different teams, he has once again patiently waited for his chance to come and today he shines for the Nets.

Boki, friend of mine... Best of luck, you deserve it... But not in this series...

Rasho Nesterovic, acquired in a trade with San Antonio as part of the Raptors' big off-season rebuild, leads the team in playoff experience with 56 games.

"We just have to come out and play our game, not get distracted with those people that are talking things like we can't beat them," said Nesterovic. "We've proved them wrong. Nobody predicted us to be in the playoffs anyways, and we are here. This is where the fun begins."

According to NBA stats (http://www.nba.com/playerfile/radoslav_nesterovic/career_stats.html) he played in 54 PO games.

I picked somewhere (maybe here) that Rasho is only active player with 7 (or is it 9) consucetive PO apereances (besides Duncan and Horry). Not that this should mean much, however it is interesting.

I am not understanding Coach's line ups. I may be at a disadvantage because I haven't been able to see games to know rotations.

T Park
04-21-2007, 01:30 PM
Well Angel he doesn't have much to work with :lol

The loss of Garbajosa was a big one.

Rasho instead of Bosh?

Angel, love, even you don't whole heartedly believe that one :lol

angel_luv
04-21-2007, 01:31 PM
Rasho would have had that rebound... put him in now!

:pctoss

angel_luv
04-21-2007, 01:32 PM
Great pass Bosh. I was so afraid he was going to shoot.

angel_luv
04-21-2007, 01:32 PM
And a dunk! Hallelujah!!!!!!!!

angel_luv
04-21-2007, 01:34 PM
Bosh needs to draw the double team and pass. He is not making shots today and we can't wait for him to warm up.

This game is hard to watch.

angel_luv
04-21-2007, 01:37 PM
This is what I am talking about Raptors. Go boys! :)

And to clarify T-Park. I think Chris Bosh is a star and the team most definitely needs him.
I just don't want him shooting this game because he is way off.
And if he wasn't going to get rebounds I would rather have Sho in there because he likely would get them.
Neither Sho nor Bosh have been scoring factors really so it is about screens, passing, and rebounding for them today- at least I think.

I wanted Sho in at least for a little, even with Bosh because Bosh doesn't have play off experience and it was showing.
He needed to calm down.

04-21-2007, 01:39 PM
I need a rebounder in. Please- take your pick Coach.

T Park

If Carter makes both, that could be the game.

IMO, dissapointing first game for the Raptors.

He is. It is so hard because he is on the enemy team but whenever he scores or steals, I feel proud. :)

Thank you Bosh! Defense!

angel_luv
04-21-2007, 01:56 PM
Goodness... ill advised shot ( another one) by Bosh and where were my rebounds?

angel_luv
04-21-2007, 01:57 PM
I think Bosh thinks the only way to take over a game and be a leader is to score.

angel_luv
04-21-2007, 01:58 PM
Holy cow!

angel_luv
04-21-2007, 01:58 PM

Valiant effort to comeback. Let's carry the effort into game 2 and throughout the series.
We'll be all right. :)

I remember back in 05 when the Spurs lost the first game to the Nuggets and then went on to win the series and the Championship.

Dajmo Raptors! :cheer

Props to Nachbar. He was awesome. :)
