This is true, afterall Asvel is not among the best european teams. They're to the Euroleage what the Atlanta hawks were to the NBA last year.
However!
The Spurs, I believe, will have a much harder time vs. Maccabi in Paris. Are they even in the Euroleague?
I thought they played in the ULEB league (lower league than Euroleague) this year?

All the NBA teams have had one of the new balls to practice with since the beginning of last season. So they do have some experience with it already.
Most complaints about it is that when it gets sweaty, it's super slippery compared to the old one.

10-05-2006, 04:41 PM
My thoughts on the centers today:
Right now, Butler looks like the 12th or 13th man. He's got to get into shape and get a little more active on D. He wasn't very good today.
Against Addeco, Oberto looked like a starter. Elson was pretty good on his screen-setting and rebounding. Elson on D was good positionally on helpside but he was a little soft on post defense. He played a lot in the big lineup (both 1st and 2nd half) with Timmy as the other Big.

I was very dissapointed with Bonner. I hope this was just shaking off cobwebs. I was impressed with Elson though, and Wow did Oberto look good or What? Maybe some minutes other than garbage minutes for him this year.
Mr. Body
10-05-2006, 04:47 PM
Oberto played scrappy. He'll get some O. boards and dump-down passes. Otherwise, he shouldn't foul as much as last year.
Elson wasn't terrible. He plays tough, despite looking smaller than you'd think. His positioning is already better than Nazr, and he'll probably wipe memories of Nazr away, all things considered, although he'll have a block only every three games or so.
Butler wasn't really there. Not a great start for him, but he's not used to a structured offense and defense. He's a veteran, but after all only played for the Knicks. If this game is any indication, we shouldn't expect much out of him at all, while Elson is a player who can find a lot of playing minutes. I'd expect Oberto to be supplanted as a starter, but get enough minutes off the bench.
Solid D
10-05-2006, 04:48 PM

I wouldn't say that just yet. Oberto played extremely well today with hustle rebounds, working to the open baseline spots to bust the zone, screening was solid, passing was crisp, excellent defense.

Oberto - Looked comfortable out on the floor. Played well with Duncan. Defense was improved. If he can get defensive rebounds, he might be a candidate to start.
Elson - What I expected. Can run the floor some. Get a couple rebounds. Isn't much of a threat to block shots and is weak around the basket.
Butler - Looked lost out there ... but then again he didn't get to play with the starters like Oberto and Elson did. Having Bonner covering your back is a big difference than having Duncan behind you. Showed good hands but will need to become more active overall.
Bonner - Looked a little nervous but had good energy. Did a nice job of working off screens.
Melzer - The king of the inbounds pass. Tall, long arms and can really pass the ball. Hopefully we get to see more of him.
Lee - Only saw a little bit but he had good body control and didn't rush anything. If he can be a point guard, he might push Beno for a spot on the team.

Adecco Asvel never ever win anything in Europe. They were French champs in a period when French were between 10th and 15th place in Europe BB.
Barcelona realy have problems preparing for new season. And after this summer USA BB performance on WC, I don't think this win against 76's will have any effect on their confidence.
