Happy to oblige, jman.
Here are two reviewers with a clue, at least regarding Nicholson:

1. Less an actor these days than a grinning, dancing clown named JACK!, Nicholson bragged about not doing any research to play Costello (ostensibly based on notorious Boston Irish mob boss Whitey Bulger), and oh does it show. Given how hard people like Damon, DiCaprio and Famiga are working in practically every scene—the men do easily some of the finest work of their careers, while Famiga invests a throwaway role with uncanny grace and fierce intelligence—it's practically an insult to see Nicholson caper into his scenes to do his Jack shtick, all mugging and naughty-boy grins. With a clown like this, it's little wonder that scenes with him which should have been either terrifying, blackly comic or that weird admixture of the two which Scorsese long ago patented as his own, come off as neither, just a film going through the motions.

It's a testament to the rest of the cast that Nicholson's self-worshipping train-wreck of a performance doesn't sink the entire film. But for him, The Departed would have been one of the great films of the year, a fine piece of pulp fiction graced by superior acting and smart scriptwork. As it stands, the film is merely good, something one never wants to say about a Scorsese picture. By Chris Barsanti.

2. In Scorsese's place are the tiresome hambone antics of Jack Nicholson, and, for whatever reason, Scorsese indulges him completely. If it weren't for the gallery of standout performances by DiCaprio, Baldwin, Sheen and others, Nicholson would've brought The Departed down in the crash and fury of a performance that feels like a varietion on his already stale Witches of Eastwick schtick. Nicholson's meant to exude evil, but there's nothing remotely threatening about the guy; he's so busy hamming it up, all wide-grinned mugging and clowning around, that he forgets that true evil resides within a cool, composed, largely silent exterior. Consider, for instance, the marvelous Ray Winstone as Mr. French, one of Costello's right-hand men, who, merely with a glance, can get a guy to tremble and piss his pants. In all his films (Sexy Beast, Cold Mountain, The Proposition are highlights), Winstone's imposing stature quietly eclipses their lesser qualities. Unfortunately, Winstone is too marginalized a performer here, and time and again I wished that the role of Costello had gone to him. If Nicholson were ditched and Winstone cast as Costello, The Departed could easily have been one of Scorsese's most fascinating treatments of evil (and one of this year's best films). by Jay Antani

(I did not think *yawn* Damon, Baldwin, Sheen, or Marky Mark were anything above average. Especially the overuse of swearing in lieu of plot development. It took all the acting ability of Beaviss and Butthead to sit and swear at each other. Especially Marky Mark swearing at Leo D and the Marky Mark-Baldwin exchanges were a farce.) Get a script!

its a decent movie, but I thought dumb at some parts. Come on... only 2 ppl in the whole department knew the identity of the undercover? I am sure in real life there are fuckups, but this was just too dumb to even be realistic IMO.

I agree w/the poster above Jack is a clown, a great clown but not beleivable as a mob boss.

Dicaprio was a A+++ and should be the reason why ppl go watch the film

Not to talk too much about the movie, but this point doesn't make sense. The two people in that knew about who the undercover was were FBI - no one in the PD knew who he was. That was a point of battle between the feds and the department because the department guys thought they should be let in on it. I don't get why you even say this, "I am sure in real life there are fuckups". What fuckup are you referencing?

Oh and I thought Leonardo was the best in this movie. I thought Jack did a good job and I didn't mind his clowning (maybe because I know mafia/gangster people who are clowns:lol). I thought Marky Mark cussing so much was very fitting of the character. Matt Damon was good, but I thought he was the weakest actor of the group (and I think he's an excellent actor). For some reason, I think Edward Norton belonged in this cast.

Overall I give it a 8.7 out of 10.

The acting in that movie was pretty awesome. I give everyone an A+ other than that main chick and Nicholson. Nicholson I thought was too goofy for that role. When the movie was trying to be serious, he'd revert back to being The Joker or some ish.

But yeah that little guy from Titanic and Damon gave career performances.

I've watched alot of movies over and over again. I love movies with a passion. It's always been my dream.

As to many gangstas in real life being clowns, i believe you Kori.
However as to the actor called upon to play Costello as an evil gangsta, read what Wrinkleson himself thought:

"Originally, Jack Nicholson turned down his role in the movie, but after a meeting with Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio, he was finally convinced to play the role of Frank Costello. The main reason he joined the production was because he had previously done a few comedies, and wanted to play a villain again, and he considered the character of Costello to be the ultimate incarnation of evil." imdb.com

Sidepoint I don't know how any of you could stand it when in the course of losing the playoffs to the Lakers, during the game Pop would try to console and restrain Wrinkleson as he was going off on one of his sideline rants and possibly being ejected by the refs, altho god help us that would ever happen in L.A. Disgusting of Pop. Pay attention to your team that's losing, not this over adjulated spoiled clown. :nope
