Do any of y'all experience a lot of screen-tearing in your games? What resolutions look best to everyone?

I get a bit of noticeable tearing, but I don't think it's my monitor (Samsung 24" Syncmaster 244T). I don't notice tearing at 1920x1200 on my PC games on the same monitor, but when I run my 360 at 1280x1024 over VGA or 1080i over component, I get noticeable tearing in NBA 2k7 and Oblivion.

Since games render to the 360's framebuffer in 720p, it seems like this should be the best choice as the other resolutions require upscaling from the box. I'm wondering if your games look best in 720p.

Of course, frame by frame, the cleanest picture is over VGA, but the tearing is impossible to ignore over it.

Are you getting it in all games or only specific ones? I would figure that it's due to the fact you're not running the max res on the monitor, and then on top of that, the 360 isn't matching the refresh rate of the screen. If you're not getting a constant 60fps, then you'll see more tearing ... I have this problem on my laptop when I run stuff at a smaller res.

I use a Sony 60" HD television. I know nothing about 360 on a pc monitor.

I just brought my 360 in today to Best Buy.
It wouldn't load the main screen. The Xbox 360 logo would come on, but then it wouldn't do anything.

Luckily Stacie bought the Protection Plan, and they gave me a new one off the shelf with no questions asked.

I haven't had problems with any of the graphics. I've got it hooked up to a 65" HD in the living room, and haven't seen any issues with tearing.

Actually, it was the monitor. I got sold a defective one by newegg.com, which burned out in 5 freaking days. On the positivie side, they're giving me a full refund RMA right away, so I will continue doing business with them. Considering everything I've ever ordered from there before has been perfect (and I've built at least 7-8 PCs using parts bought almost entirely there), I'll just chalk this bad monitor up to coincidence and maybe bad luck or the jerkoffs at UPS who delivered it.

What is tearing exactly?

Tearing usually occurs when not enough frames can be drawn to the framebuffer in time to match the monitor's refresh rate. When the monitor displays a frame, you might see one frame at the top, and the previous frame at the bottom of the picture. I can't find any screenshots to show the issue right now. In PC games you can usually turn on the triple buffer to minimize it. In this case, it looks like the monitor was just defective, and wasn't matching the fps the 360 was generating, because tearing is very minimal on my 360 over my CRT.
