What We Hear

That center Chris Kaman is going to sign the five-year, $50 million, incentive-laden extension offer before Monday's deadline as long as he thinks Mike Dunleavy is going to get the sort of extension he is looking for, too. A big part of Kaman's insistence that Dunleavy stick around is because of his close relationship with assistant coach Kim Hughes. A new coach likely would want his own assistants. Kaman wants to be certain both Dunleavy and Hughes, whom he credits for much of his development, aren't going anywhere.

That second-round draft pick Paul Milsap, a forward, is ticketed for 15-20 minutes a game by Jazz coach Jerry Sloan. This is particularly amazing, since Sloan traditionally relegates rookies, even first-rounders, to the bench.

That former Spur Mike Wilks, whose personality and work ethic have endeared him to coaches and the media everywhere he has been, will make the Sonics' final roster.

That Boston's Sebastian Telfair is totally in the clear in the incident outside a club in New York in which rapper Fabolous was shot. Telfair was robbed outside the club. Telfair's agent, Andy Miller, said reports that Telfair made an angry cell phone call at the time (of the robbery) are "nothing more than hearsay." Miller called a report attributed to Telfair's cousin, Knicks guard Stephon Marbury, that Telfair had been robbed at gunpoint "just Stephon's delusional perspective on things."

That Marbury is using orthotic devices inside those $15 "Starbury" sneakers he has vowed to wear all season, giving his feet decidedly more support. The guess here: the orthotics cost a lot more than $15. Interesting to note that Marbury also missed a preseason game with a right foot injury, though Marbury insisted the shoes were not at fault. He stepped on another player's foot. If you've ever done that while playing hoops, you know it doesn't matter much what type of shoe you've got on. You're going to sprain something.

Chris Kaman has signed a multiyear contract extension with the Los Angeles Clippers, and a source with knowledge of the negotiations said the deal was for five years and $52.5 million.

The extension, which was agreed to and signed late Friday night, takes effect for the 2007-08 season and includes incentive clauses that could bring it to $55 million.

And it also includes a "trade kicker" that would give the center a 15 percent raise -- a maximum value of $7.5 million -- if he were dealt to another team. For Kaman, that's insurance he'll be staying in L.A., or at worst, compensated nicely if he's ever dealt.

It was believed a number of teams were considering offering Kaman a maximum contract next summer if he became a free agent.

"We are absolutely thrilled to ensure that Chris will be here and staying with the Clippers for a long time to come," general manager Elgin Baylor told the Associated Press. "He is one of the best young big men in the league and we feel that he will just continue to get better."

The deal also clears the way for the Clippers to begin talks in earnest with coach Mike Dunleavy, who wanted to be certain the team would commit to re-signing its core before agreeing to a long-term extension.

Kaman averaged 11.9 points and ranked ninth in rebounds at 9.6 per game last season.
