He didn't get back on the break, got outrun to the hole by Jacque Vaughn, which caused AJ to immediately take a 20. AJ met Harris just inside the 3-point line, yelled at him for about 5 seconds, then marched back to the bench to sit down while the rest of the Mavericks seemed to have no idea what to do. Harris stood there the whole time with his mouth slightly open, as if he had no idea what was up.

Time will tell, but I still wonder if Avery's tough love will cause him to lose Harris at some point.

It's actually crazy how similiar Harris and Parker are. Both their games are quite similiar in that they are both young shoot first PG's who use their incredible speed to get into the lane to break down defenses. Both have almost no jumpshot (though Tony is changing that) and the tough love Avery is using on him is almost exactly like watching Tony and Pop on the sidelines during his first couple of years in the league. It helped Tony, and I think it may help Harris in the long run. Difference is, Pop put Tony into the starting lineup and then used tough love. Avery is doing it without giving Harris consistent minutes like that to advance.

PS. Get better Tony!! I really hope he plays against Dallas and it's nothing too serious.

Parker's status uncertain for opener

Web Posted: 10/30/2006 06:30 PM CST

The Spurs had just beaten Dallas Friday night to close out their exhibition schedule, and coach Gregg Popovich didn't need long to point out the team's biggest accomplishment of the preseason.

“Everybody's healthy,” Popovich said. “Hopefully we can keep it that way next week when we go up to Dallas.”

That task became more difficult Monday after Tony Parker sprained his right ankle during practice. X-rays were negative, but the Spurs want to see how Parker responds overnight before determining whether he'll have to miss Thursday's season opener in Dallas.

“He did a decent job on it,” Popovich said.

Parker rolled his ankle after stepping on a teammate's foot during the Spurs' scrimmage. He initially tried to walk off the pain, but needed some help leaving the court.

“We still have three days before the game,” Manu Ginobili said, “so we're trying to be optimistic.”

If Parker can't play, Beno Udrih will likely start at point guard. Udrih returned last week after missing most of the preseason with a sore right hamstring. Jacque Vaughn and Brent Barry can back him up.

“Beno's coming along pretty quickly,” Popovich said. “He's working himself into shape and now it's really important he keeps doing that and doesn't re-injure that hamstring.

“We've really gone slowly with him to make sure when he came back, he had strength. But he feels pretty good. Hopefully that will continue.”

Parker has already overcome one injury in the past three months. He broke his right index finger in August while playing for France's national team and wasn't cleared to resume working out until a few days before training camp opened.

Aside from sometimes being a little tentative to go for a steal, Parker hasn't had any problems with his finger. He was the Spurs' best player during the preseason, averaging 17.2 points and 4.8 assists in 22.7 minutes. He shot 69.6 percent from the field and missed only one of his 25 free throws.

“It's bad timing,” Michael Finley said. “We want everybody to be as healthy as possible starting the season.

“Hopefully, it's something minor and he can get over it.”

Parker has been pretty durable throughout his career. He's missed only two games because of injury (a bruised right shin and a left quadriceps contusion) in the past two seasons.

Parker did sit out the first seven games of the 2003-04 season after spraining his left ankle in an exhibition game. He also missed five games midway through his rookie year with a sprained right ankle.

Unlike other teams, the Spurs have remained relatively healthy during the preseason. Udrih and Eric Williams are the only two players to miss any time because of injuries.

“You can't be thinking about your ankles or your knees all the time when you're playing,” Ginobili said. “You just try to do the best you can, but you play aggressive and try to win, even in practice. That's what happens when you play hard.

“We were just lucky during the whole preseason.”

NOTEBOOK: Finley returned to practice Monday after a stomach virus caused him to miss Friday's exhibition game against Dallas. “It was a 24-hour thing,” Finley said. “It literally came in and went out.” …Popovich on the passing of former Boston coach Red Auerbach: “It just boggles your mind what he accomplished. But more than that, when you hear the stories of all those former players about what a character he was and what a great manager he was of people -- how he got people to do the things they needed to do, regardless of ego -- you realize what a special guy he was. He's like an icon in basketball. You just lost one of the most colorful people in the game.” …The Spurs won a franchise-record 65 games, but lost to Dallas in seven games in the Western Conference finals in EA Sports' NBA Live video-game simulation of the 2006-07 season. The Mavericks beat Cleveland in the NBA Finals. Popovich was Coach of the Year. …All Spurs' games shown on KENS-5 this season, including Friday's home opener against Cleveland, will be broadcast in HDTV.

Parker sprains right ankle, questionable for openerAssociated Press

SAN ANTONIO -- Spurs guard Tony Parker sprained his right ankle in practice Monday and is questionable to play in San Antonio's season opener this week.

X-rays showed that Parker's ankle wasn't broken, Spurs spokesman Cliff Puchalski said. He added that doctors expect to know by Tuesday whether Parker will be able to play Thursday against the Dallas Mavericks.

Parker

The Spurs will face Cleveland on Friday in their home opener.

Puchalski said Parker was doing drills Monday when he took a shot and landed on someone's foot. He didn't know if the 6-foot-2, 180-pound Parker would practice Tuesday.

Parker averaged 18.9 points, 3.3 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game last season.

In San Antonio's final preseason game last Friday against Dallas, Parker scored 20 points in the Spurs' 100-79 victory.

BTW asshole, you never said if you wanted that George Gervin Hardwood jersey for your house! I know your too short to wear it, but its still free and you can have someone taller hang it on your wall for you. :downspin:

So Beno could go from 4th PG to starting PG in less than a week? THAT has to be some kind of record.

Hope Tony will be OK.

Man, just heard. I hope it's minor. That sucks...It puts a damper on the game against Dallas, if Parker isn't playing.

Devin looked like shit. What happened to that guy?

He hasn't played much this preseason. He had a bad hammy for most of it so I'm guessing (hoping) that he's just not all the way back to 100%. Regardless, I think Avery loves Anthony Johnson and it will be very tough for Harris to start at point guard anytime soon. Mavs will need Harris vs. the Spurs if they meet in the playoffs though as there's no way Johnson can hang with Parker.

Last night on ESPN NEWS it said he was questionable. If he just tweaked his ankle, he could probably play its still two more days.

Agreed, my guess is that his prognosis improves and he starts. His minutes might be limited, but Beno should be able to step in. That's just my prediction...I hope I'm right.

I'd be surprised if he played. Pop is not gonna get caught up in doing whatever it takes to win the 1st game of an 82 game season regardless of the opponent. There's absolutely no reason to play Parker if he's not close to 100%.

It's against the Mavs, everyone in the Spurs organization wants to win it.

I've sprained my ankle 3 times this year since June, it sucks. I guess my left ankle has never recovered, my last sprain was terrible, it's been a month at least and still isn't 100%.

me, too.

I was on crutches when TPark gave me tickets to game 7 of the Mavs/Spurs series.
It keeps getting reinjured and mine isn't 100% yet either.
I hardly ever get injured and when I do, I normally bounce right back, but my ankle seems different. I hurt it before playing ball back in high school and it did take me a while then as well.

It's possible.
The sprain is real but it's not a big injury.
Yesterday, Parker was quite optimistic about this injury and was just happy that it was not a big sprain like the one he get at the start of the 04 season.

Were you at the game or watching on TV?

If you were at the game, which color won the dot race or whatever the hell Dallas does?

Pop isn't going to risk Parker getting a greater injury. Beno will play. And the Spurs will win without Parker and get inside the Mavs head.
