It has been a long day. There was a little bit of a snag at the end but both sides fought through it. Nice job, everybody.

Excellent. Tim Duncan will have some real help through the rest of his prime. Also this franchise will have a little consistency in its major personnel for a change.

Spurs, Parker agree at 11th hour
Johnny Ludden
San Antonio Express-News

The Spurs reached agreement with Tony Parker on a six-year, $66 million contract extension with less than two hours remaining before the NBA's deadline Monday night.

The NBA had to approve the contract by 11 p.m. Monday or Parker would have been a restricted free agent at the end of the season. Following Monday's practice, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich informed Parker that franchise chairman Peter Holt had agreed to improve the team's offer from $64 million to $66 million.

Parker, who had privately told Popovich a week ago that he would likely compromise at $66 million, agreed to the financial terms. The two sides were still negotiating the structure of the deal late Monday evening.

Parker's contract matches the six-year, $66 million deal David Robinson received in 1995 as the second-largest in franchise history. Tim Duncan signed a seven-year, $122 million deal in July 2003.

By extending Parker's contract, the Spurs locked up the core of their team for the foreseeable future. Duncan and Manu Ginobili, who signed a six-year, $52 million deal in July, are under contract through the 2009-10 season. Rasho Nesterovic and Malik Rose have contracts that run another five seasons. Brent Barry recently signed a four-year, $21 million deal and Bruce Bowen is signed for at least three more seasons.

Though the Spurs and Parker appeared to be only $2 million apart, negotiations hit an impasse the middle of last week when Holt declined to increase the team's $64 million offer. On Friday, Popovich said he was disappointed with the decision and urged Holt to reconsider.

TIMVP can you elaborate on what the snag was, not that it matters now, but I'm just curious.

Kori Ellis

It wasn't a specific snag. At one point late this evening, they didn't know if they were going to run out of time because they were hammering out all the details and clauses all the way to the time it was completed.

Wow! It was a close one but I felt all along that there was no way that $2 million was going to keep us from signing Parker. It just doesn't make sense to get that close and not find a way to close the deal. Our core is set and everyone will have a chance to mature together and get a continuity that most teams never achieve. I'm slightly concerned that TP is looking to add some international hardware (French National Team) to his trophy case. I'd prefer he work on his game every summer and not risk the wear-and-tear, especially now that he has his new contract. Hopefully the organization can communicate effectively to him that the type of investment they've made in him can not be risked by having him participate in international competition.

Hallelujah! I'm very happy that Peter Holt reconsidered and did the smart thing. It's comforting to know that the core group of talent has been secured for many years to come. Here's to more championships.

Many thanks to everyone who extolled their true feelings about this situation within this forum.

I take back what I said about Holt being an a-hole.

YEAH! Glad for all spurs fans to get that core locked for a long time! And Tony could be a key in 5/6 years for Spurs transition, he would only be 28. Good for a long & lucrative future!

Only hope that Parker could play time to time with the french national team, great for us and for NBA notoriety all over France. (even for Spurs by developing is leadership (what he is within french national team))

Horry is not coming back next year... and also we will have the MLE...

We'll have the capability to sign Scola and Brown, but it's hard to know if Holt will spend the money after committing to two long-term deals this offseason. I suppose it depends on how much they will cost.

If Scola has a great year over there and demands the entire MLE and if Brown explodes and commands $4 million per season, it's hard to imagine the Spurs signing both of them.

If Devin will come back for $2-3 million and Scola wants half the MLE (although it hard to say if the MLE will even exist under the next CBA), it makes lots of sense to bring them both back.

The point is that Holt is flirting with luxury tax territory. I can't see him being too excited about that. If signing Scola and Brown will force him to pay the luxury tax (again, if it even exists in its present form under the new CBA), I'm betting that he won't do it.

It's certainly possible that the Spurs will need to choose between the two, but it's too early to tell. We'll have to see what both players command.

My guess is that the Spurs will continue to make serious attempts to move Rose, as the problem with him all along has been the size and length of his contract.

But now that this deal is over, what are we going to haggle about next summer? I suppose we can always talk about trading TP and Manu now.

Marcus Bryant

Probably the loss of Devin Brown.
