"... it was a test against a team that not only swept the Rockets last season, winning by an average of 20.5 points in Toyota Center, but that Van Gundy said "looked like a championship-caliber team" in its opener.
The Rockets got a spectacular all-around game from point guard Rafer Alston who not only had 14 points and 12 assists, but added four steals. Even though he let a bit of "Skip to my Lou" slip out, he didn't commit a turnover. He even helped hold longtime Rockets killer Jason Terry to an 0-for-5, one-point shooting night.

Alston was electric; Yao was unstoppable. In 36 minutes, Yao had 36 points, making 12 of his 16 shots, and all 12 of his free throws, capping his night with a fast break, alley-oop dunk of a Kirk Snyder lob.

The Rockets made some really good moves over the summer. While one game blowout doesn't make a season, I think they are for real in the chase for the WCF. Discuss.

Yao is so good at the line that he takes the Rockets technical foul shots. He is so much better this year at going to the hoop and his turn around 15 ft jumper is a thing of beauty.

Unfortunately, Alston looks like the point gaurd they've been missing for years. The West better watch out for these guys.

The Rockets seem to have guards that A) Actually pass to Yao in the post and B) can shoot the three. As a result Yao doesn't wear down fighting for position and can make people pay for double-teams early, resulting in easy scoring opportunities. That's a good sign for them. If they can keep Skip 2 My Turnover under control, they look like they'll be pretty good.

Alston had one good game. I'm not worried that he won't revert back to being his usual self over the course of the season.

Yao is a real concern and is a lock for first team All-NBA if he stays healthy.

It's early but the West looks tooouuuugh. Houston is very solid, caught a couple of Jazz games and they look damn good, rebounding out the wazoo, Lakers are vastly improved, Clips are there. Going to be a dog fight.

1 game doesn't make these guys contenders.

Alston is a headcase, as is Bonzi Wells.

That is a recipe for disaster in Houston.

Yao can be a real concern for Spurs because we don't have Rasho aymore.
I don't see a Spurs player who can play good D on him : Elson is too thin, Oberto is too small and Butler isn't known to be a good defender.
The good news for Spurs is that Rockets haven't a good answer against Duncan.

The best way to play Yao is to make him run up and down the court...something the Spurs can do very well.

I can see that. Even though he's a good free throw shooter I think you still need to be physical with him when he does get it down low. We have enough fouls to go around.

Make him run.
Be physical.

Logically you would think that recipe would have him worn down late in games.

They woould be up there. But unfortunately, I think injuries will kill them in the long run.

Somehow, I keep remembering that Yao played a lot of defense on Tim in last year's games. Tim usually didn't play d against Yao.

I'm surprised anyone knows what Iowa High School Girls basketball was. Half court 6 on 6. 2 dribbles and a pass.

Do they still actually play that way in Iowa? I thought they finally started playing standard ball many years ago.

BTW, they were still playing that way in Texas Girls HS in the late 70s. I don't think they switched until the mid 80s.

I think they transitioned to the 5 on 5 game sometime in the mid 90s.

I was surprised Van Gundy knew about the old 6 on 6 girl game. I grew up in Iowa when they still played by the old rules and I had to think twice about what Van Gundy was saying.

What exactly makes Rafer a headcase? I think that is just some made up shit right there. He has never been a distraction for any team he has been on. I will give you Bonzi, but dont drag Rafer in there

Not made up shit. He had, and caused, problems in Toronto. It's most likely the reason he's in Houston.
