This is only our 3rd game of the season so far....and let me remind you this is the first game that Barry is actually playing well in those three games. It's way to early to write off Finley. He's just warming up :smokin

The minutes should go to whoever is playing well. Right now it's Barry so the minutes should be his. I expect Finley to bring it like he did last year so I'm not worried about him yet.

Finley started off slow last year.
Aint worried one bit about Fin.
If you forget he had a darn good game VS Dallas

Finley had the worst numbers of his career last year and sucked? I don't understand why everyone keeps "wanting Finley to play like he did last year." He had good playoffs...but during the season he was terrible.

Barry is a much better shooter. If both Finley and Barry lost their athleticism than Barry wins easily by pure shooting alone.

I agree. Barry is only a better shooter when he actually pulls the trigger. I'll take Finley being overly aggressive on occasion over Barry passing up wide open shots.

From the ASG on Finley was great. It just took him some time. For the first time in a long time he was on a new team, in a new city, and in a new system. Once he settled in, he was huge for SA. He is a much better player than Barry. Period!

Well, it can only help the team if both of them are playing well, but like in the past when the Spurs have had championships, the vets have come through in clutch times. I like how Barry is stroking his shots, and it looks like Finley is hitting the front of the rim quite a bit, but both these guys are pros and each one will find a way to contribute. I'd really like to see both of them out there. I think Pop is going with the hot hand. ANd right now that's Barry.

Well, it can only help the team if both of them are playing well, but like in the past when the Spurs have had championships, the vets have come through in clutch times. .
Ironically enough, it didn't happen last year.
There is one major difference between Barry and Finley...
If Barry isn't scoring he won't hurt you with bad shots, and he'll usually find someone else in a position to score if he's handling the ball. This is what Barry can do...this is why the people that like him, like him.
Barry can pass, he can run the break and he can get guys easy baskets...he always has this skill(except for a brief stint against the Mavs when he choked).
Finley will shoot it like he's Jordan whether he has made a shot all night or not.
That's the main difference between them...and that's the reason one is given carte blanche to suck by Spurs fans and why the other one isn't.
I don't think there's anything admirable or ballzy about jacking up shots like you are an MVP when you can't hit the side of a barn...Spursfans think it means a player has balls and heart.
I'd just like to point out that we did win a title with Barry as basically our guard and SF back up rotation against a gritty and tough team while a 3rd of the team was injured...and we didn't with Finley against a softer and healthier team.
And I've never seen Barry miss a late shot to tie or win the game, or fail to make a winning pass in that situation...I haven't seen Finley do it yet.
Finley played well in big moments against the Mavs...but if you look, his shot was not there when we needed it most against the Mavs.
That's just my take...and I'm not saying Finley sucks because he doesn't...but neither does Barry, and Barry can do more when his shot isn't falling than Finley can.
Finley does one thing better than Barry..score. Barry is the better passer, shotoer and ball handler. I think he's also the better rebounder now as well(Tim Duncan and Horry are the only guys on our team that have pulled down more boards in a game than Barry). Neither one of them are going to make an All NBA D team.

Wasn't it Finley, not Barry, who came through and gave us that 3 pointer against the Mavs last season in Game 7 that tied the game after being down 20? And wasn't it Finley's versatility and atheleticism that allowed us to use him to guard Dirk, and why Barry wasn't given a lot of minutes during that series?

Actually, in game 4 Finley hit a 3 toward the very end of regulation to give ths Spurs a 2 point lead. In game 6 he hit the 3 IN DIRKS GRILL to ice the game. In game 7, a couple possesion before Manu hit that 3, SA was down four and Fin hit a HUGE 3 to cut the lead to one. That combined with his cluth shooting throughout the series (not to mention huge dunks!) goes to disprove your "his shot was not there when we needed it most against the Mavs." opinion.

11-05-2006, 08:21 PM
Actually...if you look, I said he played well in big moments in that series but his shot and play was not there when we needed it most.
I remember his big zone busting dunks...and the impact they had...but there was another part of that series.
I mean the 4th quarter and OT of game 7...and he didn't.....he pretty much sucked for the only time in the series in that situation...and this may seem kind of harsh, but all the other shots don't matter if he couldn't do it when it mattered most. Barry is exactly the opposite...he may suck for the entire game, but I feel totally comfortable with him taking those big shots...I've never seen him suck in that situation yet...when he takes them.

I think it was probably Manu, but even if it wasn't...I know Finley missed shots down the stretch in OT.
And wasn't it Finley's versatility and atheleticism that allowed us to use him to guard Dirk,
Woooweee.....Dirk only averaged about 40 points and 20 rebounds on 99% shooting...shit, imagine if we hadn't defended him well.
and why Barry wasn't given a lot of minutes during that series?
I don't know...why don't people get out of the way of trains when they are about to get hit by them?

Spurs with Finley = 0 titles.

He is NOT a better defender than Barry...Not in the scheme of defense that the Spurs play. He makes everyone around him better...whether he passes up shots or not. This is something that Finley just can't do.
But its people like T Park and company that make it a lot easier not to even take seriously. Because they just don't get it.

Well to be fair...Barry sucked against the Mavs last year, but I think had more to do with being forgotten in the rotation and then all of a sudden being asked to do more than anything else.
I like them both...Finley earned my respect last season, he's got a great character, he plays hard and I like him. but everyone always treats Barry like he is the team bitch when he's one of our most efficient players...Finley is not a guy I would ever want taking shot to win a game...Barry is.
The first time Barry played on an elite team that team won a title....Finley's played on alot of elite teams and most of them had an ignominious ending or did things like blow 3-0 leads.

Finley is what they wanted Barry to be....they didn't want a passing type who is good at setting others up and just kind plays between the spaces and fills in the blanks.
They wanted a spectacular type who goes out and scores 20 points in a quarter...
That's just the way it is.
Again...I like Finley, I just wish Spurfans didn't have such a hate on for Barry.

Pop knows that it's a rare game where both Barry and Fin are going to be clicking. In most instances last season, and certainly in the playoffs, Pop went with the guy who was knocking down the perimeter jumper early and gave him the bulk of the backup SG/SF minutes.
I think both guys bring different things to the table and both are capable of taking over games. Fin has been awful in these last few games (i should know...I have him in 2 of my fantasy leagues and have dropped him), but I have no doubt he will hit his fair share of big shots for us this season.

Two months worth of stats in the stretch drive last March and April
combined for Barry:
fg's 76-149 53%
treys 40-87 46%
Playoffs vs Sacto 60% fgs 55% treys playing just as many minutes and taking just about as many shots as "FinDog" -just making a lot more.
Findog has some good games vs Dallas in Round 2. So lets annoint Findog captain and give him 35 min per game. :elephant
And don't bring up Barry contributions to the 2005 Championship run. Something "Barrdog" has been a part of. Unlike someone else. :downspin:

Barry has more skills but smaller huevos than Finley. The reason his minutes usually suffer is because he passes up open shots within the framework of the offense. That's one of the fastest ways to invoke Pop's hook.

Where did I say Pop was flawless? He isn't. He is, however, the keeper of the minutes, and if you want them, passing up open shots within the offense isn't the way to get them. Barry was guilty of that one for pretty much 1-2/3 seasons until he got some cold JR Smith water dashed into his face.

had to include him WITH Derek Anderson to make the trade work.

Why not talk aout the trade to get him back?

Their presence on the court will depend on a game scenario
If Timmy is double teamed a lot, Barry comes in
If they need some athleticism, or If they play against the Mavs, enter Finley
Both are great pros, both are versatile ; they are just different types of players
