Mavs F Josh Howard out 2 weeks with sprained ankle

November 7, 2006

AP - Nov 6, 10:25 pm EST

DALLAS (AP) -- The struggling Dallas Mavericks will be without Josh Howard for two weeks because of a sprained left ankle.

Howard was hurt Monday night in the second quarter of a 107-104 loss to Golden State that dropped the reigning Western Conference champs to 0-3 for the first time since 1993-94. Howard stayed in Dallas on Tuesday while teammates left for a three-game, six-day road trip.

An MRI taken Tuesday showed a second-degree sprain.

The two-week time frame means he'll miss at least six games. He could return Nov. 20 at Charlotte or at home the next night against Washington. The native of Winston-Salem, N.C., likely will aim for the game in his home state.

Howard was Dallas' second-leading scorer last season and among the team's best defenders, capable of covering point guards to power forwards. Greg Buckner will probably replace him in the starting lineup.

That sucks for them.

Hopefully he recovers quickly.

In the meantime, AJ is going to have difficulty avoiding an 0-5 start.

No, no, no. You don't get it. THIS is the karma for all of the Dallas fans enjoying Tim's ankle and PF woes over the last two years.

Howard commented he was thinking of Bruce Bowen when he sprained his ankle.

Cuban is sending tapes of Howard's thoughts to the league office.

What are the Mavs doing wrong? Why the poor start?

They are the last team I thought would have a slow start, with their loss last year and increased depth.

Besides the bad news on Howard, anyone get a load of the flagrant foul committed by Jason Terry on Monta Ellis of the Warriors. Dude went for his head on a layup. It's quite possible he'll face further action from the league.

.....and they call Bowen dirty. This is not the first time I've seen this from Terry. Everyone remembers the groin punch to Finley during the WCSF.

I hope he gets his.

Remember the 03-04 Spurs? They went 9-10 in the first 19 games.

They are the last team I thought would have a slow start, with their loss last year and increased depth. The Mavs have always been about their mental makeup. I think maybe they're still hung over about the loss in the Finals.

They've got too much talent to not bounce back. But it's got to give Spur fans hope that the core still seems to be soft.

And lost in the WC semis. If the same happens to Dallas - all the better.

Dallas is still going to be a top 3 team in the west come April. It is fun to watch them struggle, but not fun to watch someone hurt an ankle. Hopefully that heals well.

Remember the 03-04 Spurs? They went 9-10 in the first 19 games. That was a Spurs team coming off a championship, and without DRob (and Kerr and Ferry to a much lesser extent).

This is a Mavs team coming off a Finals choke, with all major contributors back, with the biggest significant loss being what, Marquis Daniels?

Exactly. And they haven't won a championship because of that. Duh. :rolleyes :lol

That sucks for the Mavs. However, they're too talented to not make the playoffs. I have a feeling that they'll all be clicking during the second half of the season.

I think Sean Elliott's assment is right on the money. During the Raptors game, someone mentioned their spanking in Houston and he said he doesn't expect them to be nearly as good as last year...something to the extent of having a Finals-loss hangover.

I think it might be a real hangover.

We've all seen the pics of Cuban and Dirk getting trashed after winning the West last year. What is it now, 7 losses in a row?

Even if it is temporary, I still smile when I look at league standing and see that the Mavs have the worst record in the entire L.

I smile even more when I think about Cuban being scared to raise the banner on opening night against the Spurs in favor of doing it against a weaker team, then getting beat.

Now all I need is an announcement from Mack Brown that Matthew McConaughey is banned from UT sidelines forever and this will be a great day.

They're too good and too deep not to be top 4 in the West, and by the end of the season I'm sure they will be, but the way they are struggling right now is surprising.

I thought they actually got significantly better over the offseason.

After Wed nights game @ LAC, they travel to PHX. It's possible the Mavs may not get their first win until Sat night vs Portland.

I'd be perfectly happy if the Mavericks never won another game in their entire existence. Since that's not gonna happen, I'm going to squeeze every ounce of joy I can out of their misery while there's an opportunity.

Mavs 0-3 :elephant :elephant :elephant

I think the Clips will beat them tonight. By the end of the season they will be playing better, but I don't think they will be as good as last year. The have lost some of their athletic ability and we have upgraded ours.

Are you referring specifically to Elson v. Marquis Daniels? Or maybe it's Butler and Daryl Armstrong? Sure they're playing poorly, but where's the loss in athletic ability? I don't see it.

Don't underestimate Portland's pride. They've got some good young talent, they certainly don't want to be known as the team that got beaten by the Mavericks.
