any recommendations on good doppelbocks? i love celebrator, and the paulaner salvator isn't bad but i was wondering if there were any others you may be able to recommend. my finacee works at the alamo drafthouse and brings me home a couple celebrators a week as her shift beers - i get to duck around the $10/4 pack price.

I don't know if it's available in San Antonio, but every time I go to Denver (Great American Beer Festival), I grab a couple of Thomas Hooker Liberators at the beer bars there.

Spaten Optimator isn't too bad either. I love Salvator but I prefer it on draft and a lot of places don't run enough through the lines to keep them clean so there is an off-flavor sometimes. That's why the Flying Saucer is a good spot for Salvator and Celebrator (one of the best).

I used to pick up Sam Adams Double Bock at HEB every once in a while. It was pretty decent for grocery store brew and well priced. Don't know if they still carry it though. They frequently pull Sam Adams beer from the Texas market for various reasons. I'm still pissed I can't pick up their Triple Malt Scotch Ale anymore. It was one of my favorite grocery store beers

i'm in austin, i'll head to central market to try and find a thomas hooker - they didn't have it at the grapevine closest to me. i'll also grab a belhaven wee heavy while i'm at it. they have salvator on draft at a couple of pubs/draught houses here like dog and duck and the draught horse - they clean their lines regularly, thank god. thanks!

Mmmmmm... I just bottled a batch of doppelbock 2 weeks ago. Will be ready for consumption this weekend.

How about Victory's St. Victorious? Left Hand's Goosinator? Lowenbrau's Triumphator is also quite yummy, but I don't think it's availble down here. Doesn't Hacker-Pschorr also make one? Animator I think it's called. Haven't seen that in a while. Talk to Giancarlo at Central Market and he may be able to arrange some more selections, fitting for this time of year.

FYI, Dodging Duck should have their Starbucks Coffee Nitro-stout on tap now.
