WASHINGTON - The Bush administration is intent on overcoming Democratic opposition to U.N. Ambassador John Bolton, the White House said Sunday, but top Democrats said Congress would not confirm the outspoken envoy.

"I think if (Bolton) actually was able to get a vote in the full Senate, he would succeed ... I'm still hopeful that we can get him through," White House Chief of Staff Joshua Bolten said on ABC's "This Week with George Stephanopoulos."

"He's been a good ambassador. He deserves confirmation, so we are following the rules," Bolten said.

The problem? The refusal to face facts. There isn't enough lipstick in the world for this pig. Bolton has zero chance of confirmation before the Congress changes, thanks to Lincoln Chaffee. He has zero chance after the Congress changes. Yet, this administration refuses to accept facts, and nominate someone else. They are going to have to have their noses rubbed in it with a NO vote in the new congress. Why? It's just stupid and stubborn from the folks that invented stupid and stubborn.

Why indeed. Republican leadership saw the writing on the wall. The U.S. is running short of fresh troops to win the war in Iraq, so the only real option left for Democrats now is some sort of withdrawal and restructure of our armed forces that could take years. So we get 'cut-and-run' Democrats, but lets face facts, even if Republicans had managed to hold onto both houses, staying in Iraq beyond 08 would have required Republican leadership in Congress and the WH to make a politically costly decision to reinstate some sort of military consciption.

Anyway, deciding to renominate John Bolton even though he has zero chance of Congressional approval is a continuation of the Republican political fascade that cut-and-run Democrats are weakening our nation by playing politics with our security.
