College acceptance rates: How many get in?
Updated 11/8/2006 11:48 AM ET
With acceptance rates under 13%, Harvard, Yale and Princeton are indeed extremely selective. But looking just at them gives a very skewed picture.

"When we read stories about how hard a time people are having getting into those very selective institutions, it's not the tip of the iceberg — it's the fly on the tip of the iceberg." says David Hawkins of the National Association for College Admission Counseling.

Using data that colleges reported to the U.S. Department of Education, Hawkins crunched application and acceptance numbers for 857 four-year, not-for-profit colleges in the country that accepted more than 1,000 students in 2004. In this chart, only 2.6% of the schools accepted fewer than 25% of their applicants, while 82.5% accepted more than half.

Some caveats: Data are from 2004, the latest year available, and because they're self-reported they are incomplete and subject to entry error. Filtering out colleges that accept fewer than 1,000 students cuts out not only scores of colleges with 100% acceptance rates, some with just one student, but also a number of highly selective schools, including conservatories and all-scholarship schools. The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, which is both, accepted 19 out of 330 applicants for a 5.8% acceptance rate.

To check individual schools, including many not on the list, go to the U.S. Department of Education's College Opportunities Online Locator at nces.ed.gov/ipeds/cool.

Blaze's Take: How bad do you have to be to be one of the THIRTEEN people not accepted by Angelo State University? I'm starting to feel a little better that I didn't let the paper's offer of paying me to finish school there sway me into staying in San Angelo.

Yes it's hard to get into, so that leads me to believe that a lot of people that might want to apply, get shot down before even actually applying. You know what I mean?

To check individual schools, including many not on the list, go to the U.S. Department of Education's College Opportunities Online Locator at nces.ed.gov/ipeds/cool.

I like http://www.collegeboard.com/ which lists this information and much, much more.

Umm, no, your "spot" would have gone to the next person in line.

I'm not sure that's true. Schools regularly admit more students than will actually enroll, hoping to meet an enrollment figure. If someone is admitted, but doesn't enroll, that's part of the calculation the school has already made in deciding how many students to admit. If the number of students who enroll is below the number the school desires, the school then turns to its wait list (if it has one) to fill out the class.

The numbers are also somewhat skewed, I'd think. I'd be willing to bet that a significant percentage of the students accepted at Harvard are also accepted at places like Yale, Princeton, Stanford, and Columbia.

Ubiversity of Chicago has really lost it's reputation in the last 10 years. I remember reading 7-8 years ago that the school was really concerned with the caliber of students they were getting, and how the school was going downhill fast. It used to be almost as tough to get into as Harvard or MIT.

Is there any doubt that UTSA is the worst university in the country? Of the larger universities, it's by far the easiest to get into. Actually, I'm surprised that 73 people got denied :lol

No offense to anyone who goes there or went there but I would be all for shutting that place down and starting over.

We're fairly open here at the University of Houston. But with system schools, we can send the worst of them elsewhere. I think we've raised our average SAT (critical reading/math score composite only) over 1100! (yeah, that's not great)

But do those numbers reflect the FTIC only or FTIC AND Transfers? Because we have a really high transfer rate into UH, that's why our average student age is 27. And transfer students generally have a higher acceptance rate into college because they've previously proven that they are capable of handling the work and have grades to back it up.

I know our program looks pretty whorish by percentages, but we're pretty selective. Of an average 1,000 applications each year, we accept around 60%, and annually 35-40% of the overall applicants actually attend. But the numbers translate to around 350 students, which, at a university of this size, is pretty selective.

Now, because we are The Honors College, a very large portion of students self select their out of applying, either because they are convinced they aren't smart enough or because they think we'll be too hard.

Shrug.

Oh, and then, I feel it incumbent on me to point out that difficulty getting in/low acceptance rates/presitgious do not always equal good education. You can get a good education anywhere (even UTSA) if you seek it. You will find the best people there to educate you. You can get a shitty education at Harvard if you don't push yourself to find a good one.

But since education is merely a commodity these days, UTSA is as good as anything else for a worthless bachelor's degree. Cheaper, too.

I like http://www.collegeboard.com/ which lists this information and much, much more.

Sweet Jesus ... I just looked up where I graduated from (13 years ago) ... and my senior year I believe cost per credit hour was about $282.

Fall 2006 lists it as $581 per credit hour. :wow :wow

What alot of people FAIL to realize is that a degree is what really matters, more so than where you get it from. USAA has tons of managers, directors with degrees from all over......from Big Ten, Big Twelve, Pac 10, Ivy league all the way down to smaller mid-major schools. If you have a degree and are qualified, the school you got your degree from is really secondary.

FYI

I got my degree from UTSA in 94.......I manage a group of graduates that collectively went to Kansas, Auburn, UTSA and Art Center in Cali.

Blaze's Take: How bad do you have to be to be one of the THIRTEEN people not accepted by Angelo State University? I'm starting to feel a little better that I didn't let the paper's offer of paying me to finish school there sway me into staying in San Angelo.

not as bad as the one person who did not get accepted into freed hardeman lol

Public funding is based on credit hours, so UTSA accepts almost everybody to get more/maintain funding. The downside is that the state is looking more and more at funding based in part on retention rates, which are terrible at UTSA because, well, they accept almost everybody, and the faculty are teaching real college courses. No, it's certainly not Harvard, but no one graduates only because they show up.

In the department I am familiar with, they do quite a bit to try to help the low-end students, but they end up flunking them anyway.

Hey, I went to Washburn for a year! Shuddup!

Traditionally, Washburn has been a LARGE commuter school, hence the high acceptance rate. The academics there are still good, however. Topeka just sucks ass.

That's pretty much what I've seen in the higher depts too.....I also guess this is why the graduation rate is really, really low for incoming freshmen.....
