View Full Version : Notre Dame @ Southern Cal

thoughts:

notre dame has played garbage teams since getting wasted by michigan. USC's defense will be, possibly, the best they face all year and USC's offense should be able to take some momentum from the last two big wins against Cal and Oregon.

prediction:

Southern Cal 35
notre dame 17

yeah, USC just held Cal to 9 and notre dame's offense is marginally better than theirs while notre dame's defense is not very good.

35-17 USC

I think that ND's offense is more than just marginally better than Cal. Since I am a notre dame fan and will be at the game I am going to pick the upset in a shootout.

ND 45
USC 42

I just can't believe I will be there. JGW I am assuming you have been to a game at the colisuem, How is it?

i have been to about 10 games there total, i suppose. i would go whenever i did not have a rugby conflict.

i think you will have a great time! i am jealous you are going. as for the coliseum?...well i think its a grand place, all kinds of fans, thats for sure. its kind of hard to answer that question...what stadiums have you been to before?

i think kyle field is louder and probably has "better" fans, but the coliseum is a special place, no doubt, and the fact that you are going to be there for notre dame...it should be INSANE!

It should be a great game. I don't think USC is a lock but I like them at home.

I went to the game in 2000 and I saw George Wendt. He was cool but a little disappointed that the Irish lost. Trojan Fans were yelling Rudy is a fag after the game which I thought was pretty funny.

Thanks for the info. I have been to quite a bit of A and M and UT games. I went to ND and Michigan at the Big house, but was sitting in the ND section. ON Saturday I will be sitting in USC section since the guy I am going with is USC alum. I heard that if can take the shit talking that the USC fans are great to be around. I am fully prepared to be bombarded with trash talking espcially if ND is losing, but I think that is what makes the games fun.Am I being mislead? should I expect to get beat to hell for wearing a ND jersey?

thats a good prediction. i flirted with 35-21, and that should probably have been my guess. but i'll stick with 35-17...i think the USC defense is going to really give nd some trouble.

not to mention Pete Carroll is 19-0 in November for a reason.

you'll be fine as long as you're not obnoxious. every nd game i have been to has been fine. of course, you could get stuck by the obnoxious drunk, but otherwise you'll be fine as long as you are not too outspoken. the trash talking is harmless since most of the bad stuff is saved for ucla and cal. enjoy your time. stop by alumni park if you don't have anything else to do.

How does it ruin the BCS? Michigan is in by default if USC loses to ND. ND has no chance of making the national championship game.

If Florida wins out, i don't see why USC is a lock over Florida.
For BC$ t.v. ratings, yes i see why.
Wouldn't you longtime USC-Notre Dame watchers say throw out the "favorite" title? Ie last year. It took a greasy illegal Bush Push to get SC past ND.

Imagine if USC beats ND then chokes to UCLA. :elephant

College football needs a playoff in the worst way. An 8 team one. Even a 4 team one would settle a lot.

everyone keeps talking about the push...and i don't know why:

1. he might have scored anyway
2. great drive and game leading up to the final play
3. do you know how many times that push has ever been called in CFB?....none

1. Meteor could have come down and struck Leinart in. Yes he might have scored. Wasn't looking good -at all.
2. yes it was. Does not change push.
3. Never? Even N.D. coach is alleged to have said that is what he would have wanted his running back to do.

4. So why not remove it from the rulebook? Add pushing from behind is a go.

...maybe they just should allow it b/c it has never been called (penalized) in the college ranks. in fact, players are always pushing QB's in the back on QB sneaks...it happened in that same game actually...suppose we'll never know if Quinn thanked his teammates or not...not to mention the block in the back on the punt return for TD.

so bottom line...USC made the final drive, we won. game over.

Carrolls were much more low risk in this years game, only 1 yd each.
I think Weis should have grabbed the 1st half field goals, altho 46 and 49 are certainly not gimmes. That is why I asked how the ND kicker is. 4th and long and both times Weis went for it. Overagressive?

2nd half Weis more or less had to go for the 4th downers being down 28-10.
However they were short and close.
Inside 6 yardline twice on same drive at 4th and 1 & 4th and 2.
It worked, got an offsides and then a touchdown.

Anywho the botched onsides kick that SC ran in for a touchdown rendered the field goal story just a sideplot.

well, another issue, besides an aggressive mindset, is i think Weis thought USC was going to keep putting up numbers and that he would have to score TDs and not field goals to stay in the game. keep in mind USC scored on their first 3 drives.

well sorry I did not answer your question sooner, but yes ND's kicker suck past 40. Put it this way, if you look at the numbers the percentages are in notre dames favor going for it on 4th down and great than 5 than the kicker making a plus 40 yard field goal. Plus if Mcknight could catch the damn ball they move the chains, if anyone shriveled up in a big game it was Rhema. Samarjdza gave him the opportunity to be in single coverage the whole game and he did not have much of an impact, or atleast not the impact he should of had.

I did not cry in my beer, I bought a keg and toasted the trojans the best of luck in winning the national championship game. It is hard to be bitter about a game in which the team you were playing was just flat out better than you. If ND had given the game away I would have been more pissed off, but I firmly believe, especially after seeing them in person, that USC is really that good.

P.S. It is hard to appreciate their overall speed unless you are at the game, TV does not due them justice. Their defense is very very quick and have a great understanding of how to use their speed. They do not have a lot of wasted energy and motion when playing on the field.
