SAN ANTONIO, November 21, 2006 - The Spurs Foundation has awarded more than $130,000 in grants to 13 area organizations for educational and recreational programs that serve South Texas children. The grants will help fund camps, educational and recreational activities, recreational areas, clothing and more.

"We just want all kids to have opportunities...opportunities to grow, develop self-confidence, be encouraged, be creative and learn about their potential in life. We're proud to reward the hard work of many deserving charities," said Alison Fox, executive director of the Spurs Foundation.

The charities that were chosen this year are: American Cancer Society (Camp Discovery), Association for Retarded Citizens (Arc), Big Brothers-Big Sisters, Boys & Girls Clubs, Boysville, Children's Shelter, Mission Road Ministries, Respite Care, Ronald McDonald House, Roy Maas' Youth Alternatives, SAMM Transitional Center, San Antonio Food Bank and St. Peter-St. Joseph Children's Home. In addition, each charity will be receiving a signed basketball from the Spurs team.

"Funding from the Spurs Foundation will be used to rent wheelchair accessible vans for field trips and purchase supplies for recreational activities and social events," said Cynthia R. Hamilton, development director of The Arc of San Antonio. "The goal of this project is to engage children and youth between the ages of 4 and 21 in social and recreational activities that improve their quality of life."

Spurs Foundation beneficiaries must be tax-exempt 501(c)(3) South Texas organizations requesting funding $25,000 or less for specific projects. The Spurs Foundation was founded in 1988 by the San Antonio Spurs to support physically, emotionally and economically underserved youth. Since its formation, the Foundation has donated more than $11 million in cash and in-kind donations to area youth organizations.
