On a fresh installation of Windows XP Professional because that's what I'm going to be doing when I get home tonight.

I usually do this every few-six months, but was kind of forced to this time by problems relating to IE7.

Linux

I've always wanted to try that. Maybe I will try it with a dual-boot once I get everything setup in Windows.

Linux can't write to NTFS partitions, so unless you want all of your data to be read only, make 4 partitions: 1st partition for Windows, 2nd linux, 3rd linux swap-partition, and fourth data. Make sure the data partition is FAT32 if you want full read & write access to it from both operating systems.

When I had a crappy system before I would reformat more often.

Wish I knew about that NTFS problem a little bit sooner. :lol

I am going to make a fresh partition to backup my data because I don't keep my external HD connected all the time.

Even if you only install Windows, it's always a good idea having at least two partitions, one for the OS itself and the other for your data (office files, mp3's, pictures). In that way, should you have to format/re install Windows, there's no need to move your data files. I'd also recommend having a third partition as swap space.

If you're going to try Linux, be sure to install Windows first. Linux can deal with an existing Windows and set your box for dual booting but Windows can't do it the other way around.

Saludos.
