I know in the past yall have said my Maxtor is a piece of crap and I will go out in about a year. Well, I have had the hard drive for about 1+ year. I saw this at best buy http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8004679&productCategoryId=pcmcat33200050001&type=product&cmp=++&id=1155848396138
I should of went for it. Can I find something similar to that round now?

Is this the same as the other? http://www.buy.com/prod/seagate-barracuda-7200-10-hard-drive-250gb-7200rpm-100mbps-ultra-ata/q/loc/101/202701408.html?dcaid=17379

You should still check. When I went to Best Buy last night to get Rainbow Six Vegas, there were still a few of those left. This was in LA, but maybe the stores in SA got a lot of them too. You still have time to check since BB is open until 11:00. That HD is $20 more online.

Yah, I haven't checked at the store. I don't think I will tonight. I just checked tiger direct. They have some good deals on hard drives. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/Category/category_tlc.asp?CatId=8

Those deals all have rebates though, and their 250GB Seagate isn't as good as the one BB is selling (it only has an 8MB cache). If you're looking for a similar ATA hard drive, newegg has almost the same hard drive for $80 + $6 shipping, and I think no tax since it's based in CA. It's the exact same drive you listed from Buy.com.

Yah, I only saw that it was 8mb cache. Is there any other good 250 GB ones that are similar to the one at BB on tiger direct? I'm all right with the rebates tho.

How are the Western Digital Hard Drives? I'm looking at this one now.... Since its on sale and I have a lot of Best Buy gift cards.
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7615967&type=product&cmp=++&id=1130985130674

I'd still like to get the Seagate, but its at 133.

I'm looking at my order sheet from Tiger Direct when I got my hard drive.

I have a Maxtor 160GB EIDE HD 7200/8MB/ATA-133.

Isn't there like 2 different Hard Drive types. SATA or ATA. I don't know If my computer will be compatible.

Also, I'm looking for some more RAM. Right now I have Ultra 512 MB PC3200 DDR 400MHz CL3. I don't know If there is something for cheap on BB that will go with my computer. So some help will be nice.

Here's a picture of SATA ports (they're the four bunched together orange ones with the L-shape inside)

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ECS/PF5/images/sata.jpg

If you don't have these little connectors on your motherboard, you can't use a SATA hard drive. If you do, SATA is a better buy, because if you ever upgrade your motherboard, you're going to have a lot of SATA ports and very few IDE ports (for ATA aka PATA drives).

http://www.newegg.com is usually the cheapest and best place you'll find. Make sure to buy DDR and not DDR2, as they're not compatible. Also, the lower the CL number, the better... i.e.,. CL2 RAM is way better than CL3 RAM. Best Buy will have crap RAM for sale at premium RAM prices.

The best brands of RAM are Crucial, Corsair, and Mushkin. Only Corsair won't cost you an arm and a leg though (unless you buy their best sticks, which are quite expensive).

That WD looks like a pretty good deal at $80 since you have free SATA ports. Not as good as the Seagate Fillmoe posted, but not much worse.

not to hijack the thread or anything, but i'm looking to buy a new computer tower. I'm happy with my monitor, speakers, and just about everything else (could use a new mouse... but that's minor) any clues as to where i could find some good deals? i used to know a guy in dallas who built custom computers for cheap but i've lost contact with him. any help would be appreciated.

If I get this new hard drive, It wont be hard to transfer my music from hard drive to hard drive correct? I have my music on my MP3 player, but I need my folders to be the same on my new hard drive. When I tried to sync my music from my mp3 player to my hard drive, just the music files showed up. Also, do you think Its a good idea to run a fresh copy of XP on the new hard drive. I think thats what I'm going to do. To bad I don't have Vista yet...

Setting up serial HD's can be a headache, especially if you buy them OEM and have to look up the drivers yourself. If your a novice, I recommend you stick with EIDE since it's easier to partition, format and boot. As long as you get one with a 8mb cache you'll be alright, just look for a spin rate of at least 7200rpm. I recently purchased a new Maxtor 200gb, 8mb cache, 7200 rpm for under $55/delivered on ebay, just bid on new HD's only from sellers with lots of feedback.

Ideally, you want to set up windows on new hard drives since they are free of errors. Transfering music files should be as easy as slaving your current drive and moving the music files to your new HD destination folder on Itunes or whatever software your using.
