View Full Version : The Official 'Where to Watch a Spurs Game' Thread

Ok, we all know that only San Antonio residents and rich people are able to watch all of the Spur's regular season games.

This thread is here for everyone or anyone to post the city and name of a sports bar in which non-nationally televised Spurs (other) games are shown.

Anyone want to get things started with sports bars in Austin?

Um, with all the petrol you'd be using going back and forth to Austin to watch games, wouldn't it be cheaper just to buy League Pass? It's only $160, right? That's about 50 gallons of gas. :lol

I don't think you could see it either way if you're in Austin and it is blacked out.

I imagine they play the game at the Tavern on 12th as well. Pretty sure they have some sort of dish. I've gone to see games at Pluckers as well, but that was a national broadcast game.

From http://www.nba.com/nba_tv/league_pass.html
What are blackouts?
Blackouts take place when a televised game is televised locally in your area via a regional sports network, or an over-the-air station. If a game is blacked out on NBA LEAGUE PASS in your local area, you should tune to your local station to see the game.
Why are there blackouts?
Blackout restrictions are intended to protect the local television telecasters of each NBA game in the respective team's local market.

THEREFORE, almost everyone who lives around San Antonio (give or take a 100 to 200 mile radius) who has purchased League Pass, will have all Spurs games blacked out in order to "protect the local television telecasters"

See the problem with Austin/San Marcos etc. is that they are out of the local area, so they don't get the San Antonio local channels. But they aren't out of the blackout area; so sometimes the games are blacked out on LP for them as if they were getting the local channels.

It's a stupid situation. If you don't get the San Antonio local channels, then you should be considered out of the blackout area. I don't know why they don't do something about it.

Who should we call to fix this for you guys?

If so, seems pretty shortsighted, great advertising dollars, and more viewership could be had had they just added the Spurs to this.

11-27-2006, 10:11 PM
An absolutely inane situation... I sent the following email to [email protected] a little over a week ago... of course I didn't expect much of a response and didn't get any at all... it's frustrating to me given how simple it seems it should be...

"I find it absolutely ridiculous that NBA TV as well as NBA League Pass blacks out the San Antonio Spurs games on Austin cable networks (Time Warner & Grande Communications)... Although I, as a Spurs fan, see what I would guess to be about 60 percent of their games per season (on FoxSW and other channels), I would gladly pay for NBA League Pass to see the other games... However, it seems that Spurs games are blacked out even though they are NOT shown on any local Austin channel...

I would love to hear a logical explanation as to why I cannot see Spurs games that pretty much anyone else in the United States can... to reiterate, I am willing to pay for these games and they are NOT being shown on any channel on Austin's cable networks...

Thank you for your meaningful response."

Johnny_Blaze_47
11-27-2006, 10:26 PM
The other major problem with San Marcos is that the city lies in two TV markets (SA's and Austin's). That's why CBS/NBC/ABC have both affiliates channels reaching into SM. The cable providers in town are forced to carry all six stations on their normal channels.

We get the FSN games. It seems like last year some of the games were on the WB if not FSN/ESPN/TNT/ABC, but none of them are on the CW this year, so we're probably missing every KENS5 and My35 televised game in Austin this year.

They black out Mavs and Rockets games in Austin as well. Those fans aren't able to see games on FSN either, so they can't get League pass or watch 90% of the games on a local channel. For baseball I think they black out Astros and Rangers games. Football blacks out Cowboys and Texans, I think. Not that you'd ever miss a Cowboys game here if you wanted to see one.

I don't understand how this city can be in the blackout area for three different cities that far apart. Do they black out the entire state just in case? I seriously doubt I could find any OTA antenna that would allow me to get Dallas, SA, and Houston games. The closest of those is two and a half hours away and the furthest six hours away? I doubt it's a distance thing or Northeast cities would have most of the Eastern division blacked out based on what they're doing here.

It'll probably be the most annoying in April when we only get four of ten games in that closing stretch.

austin CW has shown one spurs game already, but they have a disturbing commerical now where they advertise showing spurs and mavs games, cutting into the spurs only games they used to show... thank god for 1530 and/or sirius. :depressed btw stros games are always usually on FSN, channel 23 or 77 on TWC - if stros and rangers are on at the same time for FSN they show the other on 23 or 77.

also, CW doesn't show games on nights where one of their big shows is on - they will show stuff on friday or saturday but won't bump programming other days for it. they will occasionally show late west coast games that come on after CW scheduled programming on weekdays.

For DirecTV subscribers in Austin, we used to be able to pick up KENS re-broadcasted games on channel 2 (not sure what call letters), and the local NBC affiliate KXAN 36 and the old WB54 (before they became CW54).

Now it's pretty much FSNSW and the occasional ESPN/TNT national broadcast.

Pluckers on Research Blvd in Austin was very accomodating with the Spurs game. All the tv's had ESPN on waiting for the mavs/cavs game. I came in, sat down and requested the Spurs game be put on. For some reason my waitress had to ask like 5 people before the channel finally got swithced but she was very nice and the manager finally came out with the remote. She put the Spurs game on the little tv I was sitting by, then she was like "hell, I'll put it on the big projection screen for ya..." I was like SWEET!!!! so I'm drinking my beer and eating my wings when 2 girls and 2 guys walked in decked out in their mavs jerseys and shit... they sat down and looked around with a puzzled look, said something to each other then got up and left! HAHAHAHAHA, it was satisfying.

I found that the $159 for a season is a lot less than the difference between the Dos XX that come from Wal-Mart and the Dos XX that come from the sports bar over the course of just a few games. Especially here in Dallas where the notion of a cheap drink just isn't in these people's vocabulary.

i would, without hesitation, purchase LeaguePass if I could get a 100% airtight guarantee that I would not be in the black out zone.... but it's just not possible because the people running these shows are idiots.

I went to Legends once on ChumpDumper's recommendation.....they had decent burgers, and of course CD was a no-show.

i almost went to Legends instead... but pluckers sounded more delicious, plus they had 32oz beers for 3 dollars. I had three of them and then drove home, what do you think about that ruffnfnfnrreadyoozzstly?

so I'm drinking my beer and eating my wings when 2 girls and 2 guys walked in decked out in their mavs jerseys and shit... they sat down and looked around with a puzzled look, said something to each other then got up and left! HAHAHAHAHA, it was satisfying.

I thought if it didn't show locally on your FSN or KENS, or whatever channel Spurs games usually show on then you wouldn't be blacked out. If they don't show the Spurs games locally in Austin then you probably aren't blacked out.

read the first couple pages of this thread. It's an assanine situation but if you're within a 100-200 mile radius of San Antonio, you can be (and i have been) blacked out

Wow, that's just wrong. No reason to black out people who can't see it any other way.

what's worse is that you can't get a straight answer from anyone that works for League Pass. you'll get alot of ummmmmmm's and wellllll's and i dont know's when you bring up the black out subject. it's like they don't know any more about the service they are trying to sell than the people calling in trying to buy it.
