View Full Version : Are the Utah Jazz for real?

Ok, even though it looks like they're going to lose again tonight, the Jazz still have the best record in the league (12-3). They're getting the job done with excellent execution, great point guard play (Deron Williams is third in the league in assists), and all of the while, AK-47 was injured for a substantial stretch in their schedule so far (If I remember that correctly).
Are they for real? Can they sustain this pace throughout the 82 game season? Are they just a 'hot' team at the moment, or are they a real contender? Should we be concerned as Laker (me) and Spurs (all of you) fans?
Discuss.

fuck the Jazz. they will collapse and miss the playoffs. they are a very average team. Boozer, and AK-47 are very overrated players that are better as second options, than the #1 option. Deron Williams is good, but not good enough to lead this team to the playoffs in a tough western conference.

Overrated ? Seems like you only know and watch Mavs ball. They are underrated if anything.

I can see them making the playoffs in the 6-8 slots. I don't think they're a team that will win > 52 games or finish with one of the top four seeds.

They're good. They have one of the best coaches in the league. They play physical and freakin' dominate teams on the boards.
But then again, they started off hot a couple years ago and then ended up one of the worst teams in the league. Bump this thread again in January.

To hijack this thread for a second, what coaches are championship quality coaches? I'd only place Phil Jackson, Pat Riley, Pop, AJ and Sloan in that category.
If you want regular season wins, I'd put Nellie, Flip and D'Antoni on top of that list.

i agree with this assessment, they will make the playoffs as long as they're healthy but they will probably be bumped in the first round

Pre-season I had them winning the Northwest with 48 wins. I stand by that.
Mostly I'm pissed because I knew Deron Williams would be a fantasy beast this year but missed him in my leagues and couldn't get anyone to trade him to me. :lol

They look good for now, but in the playoffs they' ve got no chance to come to the fainals. They will not have enough power in the playoffs.

a weird team. Some very good players and balanced offense, and their rebounding superiority shows that Jerry has them hustling. When their shots are falling, they win. But it's hard to say what the team's personality is, with no clear superstar or signature style. How are they so different this year than last? They'll probably make the playoffs but probably not past the 2nd round.

They are good but they are coming back down to earth a bit now, with their losses to the Warriors and Magic. Spurs i expect to win tomorrow night in Utah because they always bounce back strong having a day off after a loss. Jazz have a very well balanced team, but no big time superstar to really carry the load when they need big shots. Now the Pistons did not have that big star either but they at their best were awesome on D so they made up for that. I see the Jazz going for around 53 wins this season and losing to the Suns or Mavs in the playoffs.

Historically, with the Jazz, Okur goes off on us.

i think they didn't lose a game when they score 100 pts(12 W).
so the Spurs must show their best defensive plan to win over them. Must contain Boozer, who ave 24pts 12 rbds.(they lost a game when he scored only 4pts vs GS).
bad news is, they're the current #1 defensive team based on blocks, rbds, and steals combined. Expect them to harrass & suffocate Duncan when they meet esp now that Manu might sit. And AK is now back in their line-up.
i only knew today Boozer actually born in Germany:D

We'll find out just how "real" the Jazz are after Wednesday night's game in Salt Lake.

I could see the Jazz being a real pain in the butt IF their frontline and PG stay healthy.
They've got good talent on both sides of the ball and Sloan's a smart coach.
I think the big problems they have had with fades the past few years have been caused no PG and injuries to Boozer and Kirilenko.
We'll they've got a pg now, and Boozer, Kirilenko and Okur are young and can put up some big numbers. If they's stay healthy they'll be a pain, and they'll be a tough out in the playoffs IMO. Don't be surprised if they play a little dirty either...Stockton and Malone didn't learn all those dirty tricks on their own...that was the kind of player Sloan was too.

I think D. Williams is only going to get better as an NBA floor leader. He really makes that team go and he is a clutch performer. Who knows about Boozer? Right now, there are few playing better than he is. If Williams, Boozer and Okur can stay on the floor and healthy, they should be pretty good all season. Problem is, they haven't had consistently good health and the desire to play through some of the injuries.
(Edit: just saw Whottt's post. I agree.)

The Jazz are so fucking overrated its rediculous. They still do not have a true go to guy, much like the Bulls. They always start well. However, I think they will make the playoffs because they are in the second pussiest division in all of basketball.
So a guy who averages 23 and 13 with 3 assists on 55%+ shooting isn't a go to guy?

can boozer stay healthy
since he is playing well will the owner who has been ticked at boozer before now trade him because his value is higher

I think any Jerry Sloan coached team is going to be professional and execute well. But they're young. VERY young. I think when we put the pressure on them. EX: When we have Bruce on Deron Williams in the 4th quarter they'll fold.

They have no shotblocker that can do a good job on Duncan. Millsap might be one, but Kirilenko will surely have more minutes.. so I think we'll take this one considering that upsetting loss in GS

After 15 games.
Let's wait to see his stats at the ASB before deciding if Boozer can be a go to guy.

Fair enough but if he is averaging those numbers by the all-star break and beyond does that mean he is a go to guy? wanted to know what people base this on.

To me, being a go to guy isn't only having great stats. Marion was a 22/12 player last year but was far from being a go to guy.
To me, a go to guy is a player who can score or put one of his teammate in a great situation only when you give him the ball on offense.
Duncan is a go to guy : he can score against everybody in the post and he has enough passing skills to put one of his teammates in a great situation when he is doubled or tripled.
Having a go to guy in playoff is very usefull because teams have done a great tactictal work to stop the opposite team's plays. A player that can break a defense only by his talent is very usefull in this case.

Sure they're for real. Hopefully they can stay healthy. Three of their main players are pretty injury prone.
