I want to start converting video tape to digital on my computer...whats the best software to buy? Once I get it on there, whats the best editing software to buy? Any help would be appreciated.

do you have the hardware? You need a video editing card to begin with.

I will have to add the card. It apparently comes with the high end packages.

Good luck.

Oh, another alternative is to purchase a stand alone DVD recorder. They retail for under 100 and you can use them as DVD players as well.

Most video editing programs come with a capture mode. What type of tape is it? MiniDV?

pinnacle makes decent video software. i have hollywood studio pro, but king or slomo would be the people to ask. it was simple enough to use for me - i only make dvds from minidv stuff.

I don't have the camera with me...it's something like a "mini 8?"

I assumed it was VHS.

:lol I didn't even think of that. I was just thinking editing home movies.

How much are you looking to spend?

CC, if you want the easiest option, I would really consider the stand alone DVDR. You just plug the AV cables in and off you go. It is probably the least expensive option as well.

OK...we've already got a burner. You are saying that when I burn the video to DVD that I can then manipulate/edit the file without additional cards/software?

If you're looking to edit it, get an editing program. If you're just looking to put them on a dvd, hook it up to the burner.

As far as programs, the cheapest/easiest to learn is probably the Adobe Premiere Elements program. It'll be about 100-120.

If you are taking home movies & burning them to DVD format most people will prefer to have editing capabilities...Both Apple & Sonic have nice consumer programs for this...But in all honesty I have never used them... :lol (Where is Slomo)

Apple iDVD (http://www.apple.com/ilife/idvd/)
Sonic (http://www.sonic.com/products/Consumer/)
or $$$$$$$
Digidesign Digi 002 Rack Pro Tools LE Studio Firewire Audio Interface (http://www.samash.com/catalog/showitem.asp?ItemPos=0&TempID=1&STRID=11555&Method=2&CategoryID=0&BrandID=1325&PriceRangeID=0&PageNum=0&DepartmentID=0&pagesize=10&SortMethod=4&SearchPhrase=+pro+tools&Contains=%2Apro%2A+AND+%2Atool%2A&Search_Type=SEARCH&GroupCode=)
