« A satisfying win »
The San Antonio Spurs started the season with a W against Sacramento, 101-85.
Tony, what is your analysis of the game?
We could not have had a better start to the season. The entire team played well. It is a satisfying victory, even if we’ve had a difficult time getting in the game. With the pressure of the first game, it was a bit normal. We all felt a bit of pressure, but we found our rhythm rather quickly.
Tim Duncan has not lost his touch with 30 points, 14 rebounds.
As always, he was very impressive. With what happened in the Olympic Games, I think he has a lot to prove. He started like a gun and Manu (Ginobili) took the relay. His outside shoot was going in, and overall he played extremely well. Brent Barry showed that his 3-points shoot (3/6) could be precious for the season.
Personally, you were not as dominant…
I played my usual first game, relaxed. (Laughs) As always, I was not lucky with my offensive game. I am happy because I was extremely aggressive, even if I missed a few shoots, Tim and Rasho (Nesterovic) was under the boards. I missed 5 or 6 lay-ups but my teammates followed with some important baskets. It is not a big deal; I will come back Friday against the Lakers.
What did you think about Sacramento ?
It is early in the season; hence it is too soon to judge them. The schedule is not easy for them as they played Dallas then us and on Friday they face Houston. The Texas triangle as an appetizer is not a gift for the beginning of the season. There might be a little less enthusiasm in this team as compared to years in the past, but they remain dangerous.
You leave Thursday for Los Angeles. Playing the Lakers without Shaquille O’Neal has not the same flavor.
Every time we played the Lakers it was the talk of the town. It is not the same thing without Shaq but the Lakers remain a good team. They played extremely well against Denver for the season opener. Kobe (Bryant) is a team player and performs well on the offensive side. We shall see on Friday
