I think it comes down to a good GM and good coaching. We have both.

One or two players of superstar caliber can materially affect the NBA team while a similar talent situation in the NFL is spread over 22 or more players--not including the kicker who can play an important part in winning games and championships.

We are already an aging team which doesn't give us many trade options. Look at how many players we have who are in their 30s this season (Duncan, Horry, Bowen, Williams, Elson, Finley, Barry, Oberto and Manu)

Contrast that with those in their 20s who can contribute significantly in the immediate future. (Parker for sure--MAYBE White, Beno and Butler.)

Our great hopes for the young Euros we drafted to bail us out are proving to be somewhat ephemeral and maybe years away.

Yes the talent level is spread around in the NFL, but at the same time most teams have a few big money big impact guys. It's like that in the NBA too. My point was the Patriots don't have those big money big impact guys...with them it's more plug-and-play because they have GREAT coaching and a GOOD front office.

I don't see why the Spurs can't do that as well. Kareem was great, Magic came and kept them great, even after Kareem left. Why can't Tony Parker be our Magic?

We're in a hell of a dilemma for the future. Unless Duncan goes down with an injury for a year and puts us in the lottery, we're going to continue as high level contenders with terrible draft position.

Drafting at the 25-30 position every year eventually erodes and ruins your roster--unless you can keep finding unknown jewels like Parker and Manu to draft. We've been able to exploit the overseas player market, but that's becoming less likely as other teams extensively scout the world for players.

Our only hope is that Isaiah Thomas remains in charge of the lowly Knicks and makes some more stupid trades.

ANd the NFL has 7 rounds of drafting so the Patriots reference is pretty far off. Magic wasn't a hall of famer until later in his career.

The NFL has more rounds to draft in because they have more players on the roster. Impact per round is about the same. You still have late round picks in the NBA who pan out into solid players, some even dominate.


To expect to build a championship team around TP isn't unfathomable.

No, his value was already greater than two 2nd round picks, unless those picks are as good as Ginobili. Manu really created a lot of scoring chances. Sean Elliott made the comment a couple of times about how the ball movement really improves when Manu goes in.

BTW, the game changed from a deficit to a lead early when Manu, Beno, Barry, Oberto, and Elson were in there. Good times.

Avery was underpaid for years I think that year was a make-up year for all the years of service that the Little General had given them.
