Season 2 is the most polarizing season, tbh..virtually everybody I have discussed with disliked it at first, primarily due to the sudden change in characters..however, personally, I'd rank it as my #2 season, after watching the entire series for the third time..
4>2>3>1>5
The last 2 or 3 episodes of season 2 is in the upper pantheon of television IMO..
The final outcome of Frank's family + the entire Greek persona is outstanding..

I wasn't disappointed, at all..the final episodes of season 5 are great, I loved the outcome of the series..I have it last due to the news storyline + the serial killer storyline, I didn't care for either, tbh..
It's superior to most seasons of any other show..

I actually think the first season of the show is the worst; my preferred order of seasons goes 4 > 2 > 3 > 5 > 1. Season 2 starts really slow though; much moreso than 1. Season 1 does have by far the best version of Down in the Hole for the intro, while Season 5 has by far the worst, lol. Season 2 has the original version by Tom Waits.

I stopped watching halfway through it. My mate who watched it says it is unforunately necessary to watch as new characters enter etc. But overall not a lot happens. I'm considering reading a full outline of the season online so I can just skip to 3, 4 and 5 which apparently are amazing.
The plot is quite slow and just didn't interest me, set at the ports. It could have been good but dragged on a bit.
I know a lot of people who quit watching the show a few episodes into season 2. It's a huge mistake, as Season 2 starts really getting great at episode 6 and beyond. Even the earlier episodes have their moments that are pretty memorable, like the scene with Zig, Frog, and Cheese. But episode 6 is where the second season really takes off, and as a whole it is incredibly strong. I'll admit to being really bored with season 2 until episode 5 though the first time through.

You can't really skip an episode with the series though: it needs to be watched from the first second to the last, and in a lot of ways resembles a great novel more than it does a tv show.

So far I've learned from watching this show:
1) one has to hear every word uttered by the characters
2) understand the dialogue despite the heavy Baltimore street accent
If you miss either of the two, the scene shifts back and forth and it can get a little confusing if something important to the plot is missed or noncomprehended.
I've had to rewatch certain episodes twice now (first couple of the first season) just to get a general idea of the plot/character development.

Skipping a season is an absolutely terrible idea. While there is a whole new thread of characters and a new investigation introduced, the Barksdale storyline continues and you won't know wtf is going on in Season 3 if you skip Season 2.
Besides, Frank Sabotka is one of the best characters in the entire series.

For heaven's sake, don't skip a full season. Any full season. Even one you hate. Important stuff gets dished out often throughout the entire series and usually without a ton of fanfare. If you skip episodes or don't pay full attention, you'll miss the fun when all of a sudden an episode refers back to some little nothing that happened two seasons previous.
Season 2 is my personal favorite. By a bunch. It's much heavier on character development than it is on big/exciting plot moments, however, so depending on what interests you personally it might be boring. At least until you get accustomed to the new world they're in. I find it to be completely engrossing the whole way through, though.

I just didn't care about the people on the docks. I didn't care about them or their problems. Nick and Frank were okay, but everybody else was uninteresting and would never be seen again after the season (save for the Greeks and a cameo or two). I can't even jokingly claim to like Ziggy, although I do understand what his role was on the show.
The last two episodes were good, and the season finale's ending montage was great (like all the other seasons'). It's still great TV relative to everything else, but it's not great The Wire.

I thought Ziggy and his drinking buddy were the funniest characters on the entire show. The way he kept getting punked over and over again for continually trying to be a hard-ass was classic. Aside from that, the Barksdale crew storyline in season 2 was outstanding, not to mention the way the docks worked eastside into the equation.

Namond's mom is a complete bitch. She didn't give a damn about what happened to her son.
D'Angelo's mom seemed to actually care about him to an extent, even though she got him to roll over and take the years. Her abandoning Avon at the end of season 3 in the courtroom showed it.
Shit, season 3 probably had the best finale montage. I actually felt bad for Avon. The only person who would acknowledge him in the end was the guy he was feuding with for a large part of the season.

With more time to take in the show, I think season 5 could have used 2 more episodes. Marlo's reign and fall seemed way too rushed. Simon said HBO offered to give him a full season, but he only needed 10 episodes. I don't buy it. Writing and development seemed way too rushed towards the end.

Wee-Bey's fat wife?
Ugh. One of the most annoying things about the series to me from a writing point of view. There is absolutely zero leading up to season 4 that would indicate Wee-Bey had a wife or a kid or that he would have had even the slightest involvement in their lives. Needing a reason to tie the kids to the main cast always felt like too much of a contrivance (perhaps a reaction to negative feedback after season 2 introduced a whole new cast as their focus?) and kept season 4 from being as great for me as it was for everyone else.

I'm less annoyed by the fact season 1 didn't suggest a family life than I am by the need to shoehorn in a connection to Wee-Bey and the Barksdale crew.
It's not horrible, by any means. And, sure, maybe if you don't think about it too much you can accept that Wee-Bey had all this other shit going on behind the scenes in season 1 (though I stand by the fact it doesn't add up -- doubtful Wee-Bey was ever eating at the family dinner table or helping Namond with his homework at night, but he also wasn't a completely absent father based on his level of involvement in their lives season 4). But it's just one of those moments where you can too clearly see the machinations of the plot instead of just having everything fall into place smoothly.

I can understand him being a more involved father in season 4. The guy has nothing left by then with Bird, Dee, Stinkum, etc. gone and him doing life. And he's really only involved because Colvin is pushing on him. I don't see a way you tie the family into Wee-Bey in season 1. He doesn't bring them to the towers early on when Bubbles is doing the red-hat scheme. He doesn't bring them to the lake trout joint when they're celebrating Stinkum's promotion. He doesn't bring them to the party when one of Orlando's girls ODs. They can't be worked into the scene when Omar kills Stink and shoots Bey in the leg, nor the scene where he protects Avon from Omar. Nor the scene where he's taking all the murders in the interrogation room. Wee-Bey is one of the most one-dimensional characters of the first season. Now if it was a really central character like D'Angleo who has this kid we never heard of until Season 4 I could see the complaint, but Wee-Bey's just a supporting guy who wasn't explored in a lot of depth. And I love the Namond tie-in and how it explains the pressure he's under when he really doesn't want to slang. Plus how the whole game ties into making Prezbo's job a nightmare; I actually thought it was pretty brilliant the way they defined Namond.

Yeah Bodie kind of speaks for the viewer when he meets naymonds mom, and states that he understands now why naymond is the way he is.
Only its ironic because we are learning who he is, already knowing his mom and then realizing who his dad is, where Bodie is coming from the opposite, knowing bey, then realizing his mom is such a bitch

2. Bunk. Funny ass guy, consistently saying classic shit lol.
3. Freamon. Such a genius, highly intelligent.
4. McNulty. He should be higher on the list but somehow I started disliking him after the Serial killer issue.
5. Greggs. I love that lady and I really don't know why. I know she's lesbian on the show but something about her tells me she would make a great mom in real life.
Criminals.
1. Bodie. That's my guy, always a soldier all the way till the end. I love how he was one of the few to actually stand up to Chris and Snoop.
2. Omar. Just a clever guy who really couldn't be stopped throughout most of the show. I hate the way he went out though :(
3. Michael Lee. I believe Michael will eventually become a boss on the streets. He's one of those guys who doesn't have a menacing personality but will do whatever it takes to survive. (Tristan Wilds is actually from the city I live in now, so hopefully I run into him one of these days)
4. Chris. One Word to describe this guy : Relentless. He put in so much work for Marlo without asking questions. A loyal soldier all the way till the end.
5. Weebay. Funny guy, who also was loyal and got the job done. Very fitting to see him and Chris link up in the series finale.

Mouzone was one of the few weak characters on the show. There was never anything that would make one believe he was some kind of great muscle other than the talk about his rep, so seeing he and Omar portrayed as relative equals seemed forced. The only other character I didn't like was Nick Sobotka. Seeing him as someone who was able to negotiate with Cheese and intimidate Frog into not shorting him before The Greek had his back seemed pretty unrealistic. Nothing about Nick said person to be respected and feared.

Just watched the first 3 episodes of Season 2.
Tried watching it before but made it through half an ep. Seems better this time, dunno why.
Definitely worth keeping on to get to seasons 3, 4 and 5?
4 is clearly the best season. but dont know if you can wait till that far away. season 2 is hit or miss for people. by the time you get past 4 you;ll want to finish the series even if season 5 was mediocre.

'The Wire' creator David Simon "ashamed" at Trayvon Martin verdict
The Wire creator David Simon has said that he is "ashamed" to be an American after George Zimmerman was acquitted of murdering Trayvon Martin.
The unarmed 17-year-old was shot dead in Florida last February in a case that caused outrage and highlighted race issues in America.
The jury accepted Zimmerman's claim of self-defense and delivered their verdict last night (July 13), leading to many high-profile public figures expressing their anger at the outcome.
Referring to America's 'stand your ground' law, which permits the use of force in the event of an "unlawful threat", Simon wrote on his website: "You can stand your ground if you're white, and you can use a gun to do it.
"But if you stand your ground with your fists and you're black, you're dead. In the state of Florida, the season on African-Americans now runs year round. Come one, come all. And bring a handgun. The legislators are fine with this blood on their hands.
"The governor, too. One man accosted another and when it became a fist fight, one man - and one man only - had a firearm. The rest is racial rationalisation and dishonorable commentary.
"If I were a person of color in Florida, I would pick up a brick and start walking toward that courthouse in Sanford.
"Those that do not, those that hold the pain and betrayal inside and somehow manage to resist violence - these citizens are testament to a stoic tolerance that is more than the rest of us deserve. I confess, their patience and patriotism is well beyond my own."
Simon added: "Behold, the lewd, pornographic embrace of two great American pathologies: Race and guns, both of which have conspired not only to take the life of a teenager, but to make that killing entirely permissible.
"I can't look an African-American parent in the eye for thinking about what they must tell their sons about what can happen to them on the streets of their country.
"Tonight, anyone who truly understands what justice is and what it requires of a society is ashamed to call himself an American."

Finished season 2. I can see the complaints but don't agree. Season 1 was clearly more character driven while 2 was more story driven with how the drug trade extends much further than the towers. It was weird to see less of McNulty but liked additions of Frank, Nick, and the Farakhan motherfucker. I absolutely saw Ziggy doing something crazy but didn't think it'll happen at that very moment. I really thought he was gonna get straight murdered. Poor Frank.

Season 3 of the Wire in the books and fuck, was that an incredible season. Up there with the last and first season of The Shield. Great new characters in Marlo, Slim Charles, Cudi and Carcetti. The development or devolution of Stringer and Avon relationship was a sight to see. Poor String. Even though he was a **** the whole time you can see he was tired of the gangster life. So many riveting scenes like Bell confronting Avon about D'Angelo, his eventual death, Marlo killing Devine in straight cold blood and him sitting down in the courthouse. Just kept me watching for 5 hours straight (today at least). And Omar remains a must watch whenever he's on screen. Oh yeah, does anyone NOT cheat on their wives in this show. Damn. Anyways. Easily the best season of the series so far and I have no idea where they can go from here.

Ok. Wrapped up the entire series and I thought season 5 was fantastic. The newsroom angle had me really intrigued. Watching a second empire crumble just like Avon's was great. Omar death was poetic because Omar probably started the game just like that kid did. By killing someone at an extreme small age. It's a shame because I remember watching Omar last scene years ago before I became interested in the show. So when I saw him walk into the store, I knew what was gonna happen.

Either that, or when they did that prostitution sting and he was banging two of them when the police bust in. :lol
Don't understand the hate for Season 1, it's still my favorite--aside from the Brother Mouzone scenes in 2&3 it's the best imo. The finger-wagging scene between Avon and Daniels is still a great moment every time I see it. A virtually unknown nemesis until that point

McNulty is just a great character. (I vote here and now for a True Detective Baltimore w/ Jimmy and Bunk.) I think right now I rank 'em as 4,3,1,2,5. But the middle 3 are always flipping around for me depend on what I've watched last. 5 is always at the bottom though. The whole made up serial killer angle from season 5 was just too much of a stretch for me; made me think Simon had such a hard on to prosecute the press that season that all the blood left his head and he missed the obvious - not even Jimmy McNutty would pull that shit.

Just finished binge watching The Wire. I didn't recognize him. Lol.
I did notice a few of the actors were cast on The Walking Dead.
I liked the series, but not as much as most people. There are a dozen or more series that are better.
I watched Orange is the New Black before this and laughed pretty hard when i noticed Nick was pornstache. :lol
Actually didn't mind Nick though. He just seemed like the competent cousin that was always trying to bail Ziggys dumb ass out. He was alot more like Frank than Ziggy. Even the drug dealing he did for his family just like Frank did what he needed to do for the union.

Marlo and Snoop are annoying as hell. Chris is really the only one I like from the Stanfield crew. The way Snoop talked always came off as forced to me but apparently that may just be how that bitch is, since she got busted in real life too. :lol

Just finished the series. Stayed away from this thread until now, cause spoilers. :lol
What a show. So much intricacy. I can't wait to watch it again and find all the parallel threads that run from the first season to the last. Beautiful.
2 is underrated, but so is 5. People who said that McNulty wasn't stupid enough to pull off the serial killer stuff, well, he was hammered when it got into his head, and he was desperate. Desperation and alcohol do strange things to people.
4 > 3 > 2/5 > 1. I thought 1 just took too long to get wound up and wrap the audience up in the character's lives. I'm sure upon rewatching it'll be better.

Season 2 is incredible. The scene where Cheese punks Ziggy and steals his car right in front of Frog when Zig was trying to act hard after getting shorted was incredible. And Omar clowning Levy in court was classic too. Season 2 is second only to 4 for me.

I liked both characters. I though Marlo was a bit of Stringer and Barksdale. Snoop grew on me quite a bit. Marlo's scene in the final episode where he finds out that Omar had trashed his reputation was great."My Name Is My Name!"

Any of you been watching the marathon in HD on HBO Signature? I'd only watched a handful of episode before. I have to say that this was a pretty good show. Kind of a shame it never got any love at awards time.

I finally watched this series early this year. Very good but it is amazing how dated it seems these days.
Only thing I didn't like was the Hamsterdam story line. Just so unrealistic.

I watched for the first time last year. From a pure entertainment standpoint, Bunk and McNulty might be two of the best series cops ever casted outside of True Detective. Just wait until you get to the "fuck" episode.:lol

Spoiler for Spurraider season 2-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They fucked up by offing D'Angelo so soon into the series. He was one of the most funny, most dynamic character in his short run.

No, they didn't. He served his purpose. He was good in season 1, and then he was done away with in season 2. Seasons 3 and 4 are the best in the series, so D'Angelo being gone was irrelevant. Stringer and Avon weren't in season 4, and that was amazing. There are other characters who filled D'Angelo's role just as well.

I honestly thought D’Angelo would last longer, but I was fine with his death. Also caught me off guard because they portrayed him as the sympathetic one and just kill him off. I knew at that moment this show would be special.

There was a really subtle reference back to it when Landsman sees "Rawls sucks cock" scribbled on the bathroom wall and chuckles in a weird way but yeah, I was almost sure the show would pivot back to that but it never does :lol

Decided out of the blue to watch it again. This is the first drama series I've ever gone back to rewatch.
Even though I knew how great it was, I'm surprised how much I had forgotten. It really hasn't lost anything and is almost as enjoyable as the 1st time through.
It's got me thinking I'll check out Breaking Bad and Sopranos again. I'll personally be interested to see how I rank these after seeing them back to back to back.

Yeah...Sopranos is the one I'm least excited about. Mostly because I already binged it when I watched it the first time. Which I didn't have the benefit to do with Breaking Bad. Watched the season as it came out then waited the year (or more iirc) to see the next season. So I'm looking forward to seeing it without the huge gaps. I might actually watch Bosch 1-4 again. After all that, season 5 should be out.

i've watched sopranos/wire/mad men for the first time in the last 1-1.5 years.
sopranos and mad men are not really binge shows imo. episodes are more or less self contained stories, especially in mad men. those are slower, character driven shows. the wire was great. it was admittedly difficult to adjust and watch these shows after stuff like game of thrones or breaking bad
breaking bad is the ultimate binge show. every other episode seemingly ends with a cliffhanger

Never seen Wire or Sopranos
Saw a couple Breaking Bad & had my attention (might go back soon)
Game of Thrones lost my desire after episode 4
