How does UT end up playing an opponent with a 6-6 record?

Mr Dio
12-03-2006, 11:19 PM
By having fluke teams beat UT in a yr when other teams WISH they had a 9-3 down yr.

It's all good though.
I remeber when ags thought the Alamo Bowl was a godsend.

Iowa travels well that why they were chosen.

Iowa does indeed.
Not like the Huskers but they do bring it.

Iowa travels well that why they were chosen.

Iowa was chosen, because the B10 has 7 Bowl ties. Iowa finished 8th in the B10 at 2-6 in conf, but the 7th place team was Indiana, a 5-7 team that was 3-5 in conf.

Therefore, for purposes of Bowl selections, Iowa was the B10 #7. 2 teams were chosen for the BCS from the B10, thus making Iowa the #6 B10 team for purposes of Bowl selections.

The pecking order of the B10s Bowls is: BCS, Capital One, Outback, Champs Sports, Alamo, Insight, Motor City

BCS has 2 (Ohio, Mich)
Cap 1 - 11-1 Wisc
Outback - 8-4 Penn St
Champs - 8-5 Purdue

The remaining 2 Bowls both had 6-6 teams. The Alamo Bowl gets to pick whomever they want. They were left with two 6-6 teams, Iowa and Minnesota. From what I understand, Iowa was chosen not so much because they travel well, but because it is perceived that Minnesota travels poorly. There was not another Bowl eligible team from the B10. The conf's other Bowl (Motor City in which they face he MAC Champ yearly) went to 7-5 Middle Tenn St.

Bowls can negotiate with the confs to get who they want, and it is fairly common. OSU was chosen over ttek in 2002 for Houston (a higher Bowl when they had a sponsor) even tho ttek beat us and had better record. The same happened this year, when the Indep chose OSU over KState, even tho KState beat us (and UT) and had a better record.

One of the reasons the Alamo wanted UT or OSU is that they travel very well. The AB lost its title sponsor and must sell seats. Iowa does not travel SUPER well, but apparently better than Minnesota. They have had the benifit of playing ttek in their last 2 ABs, and ttek sells the Alamo Bowl very well. It is also the main reason the Alamo did not want ttek - they did not want a 3rd tteck/Iowa AB matchup.

I wonder if Texas will be favored in their bowl game against 6-6 Iowa?

I think they have the largest early line of any Bowl game so far at -11

Be careful, Horn's. As Nebraska showed last year, you have to show up to play to win the game you don't deserve to be at.

Of course, Nebraska last year is/was a tougher opponent than Iowa.
