Looks like Adelphia won't be carrying NBA League Pass this year. This friggin blows as I am in NY and will be stuck watching a handful of Spurs games during the regular season.

Because of this I am thinking of switching to satellite and was wondering if aybody had some info on what the drawbacks are. I know I'll end up paying more for my cable modem now since you have to carry basic cable. Anything else? What are the pros and cons? Which is better, Dish Network or DirecTV?

i have directv donnie. the cons are that if it is raining cats and dogs, you could lose service for a few minutes here and there....also you gotta position the dish facing the southern hemisphere....at least here in SA you do. so make sure you can do that.

good luck.

We had DirecTV for a long time and I really liked it. I'd definitly take that over Dish Network. It's true you can lose service due to weather. Remember that playoff game a couple of years ago we won against the Lakers cause Robert Horry missed that 3 pointer at the end of the game? Our dish cut out as the ball was in midair I had never been so pissed at DirectTV.

I used to have DirecTV and now I have digital cable. I prefer DirecTV as it is a little cheaper and I like the screen organization better. I think the pornos are a little raunchier as well.

don't go with freakin BITCH Network, which is what DISH is, i had a run in with them and it pissed me off, they switched me off my San Antonio locals and gave me freaking Austin TV. I don't live in Austin, i live closer to San Antonio and i want my news from there. What the hell would I need Austin TV for I wouldn't go down to Austin for nothing?

i like Directv also cause they give me the NFL TIcket if thats your cup of tea. Dish don't have that.

Plus Directv has better Adult Channels :D

100% satisfied Dish Network customer here.

We pay $65 a month for the 150 package, plus the HBO package, plus the HD package...which ain't bad, considering I found an old Time Warner bill from 97 before we moved out of SA and we were paying $55 for like 48 channels and ONE HBO and Showtime channel.

I had DirecTV at my parents house and I loved it!

At my place you have to pay out the wa-zoo and jump through flaming hoops to get a dish, so I said F-it, got the very basic shit and my RoadRunner, and I guess its alright.

I have been satisfied with Dish for several years. Check out Dish's and Directv's packages and see which one best fits you. As for cable modem, it might be cheaper to go DSL, though you have to think about how to get your local channels.

FYI I got a DirecTV 3 room DVR system from Circuit City last night. It came to $270 but with the rebates I am basically getting it for free. They're coming out Thursday to install it.

Thanks to everyone for the advice.

congrats, welcome to the great world of sattelite!

Youll love it everynight being able to watch good shows for practically free, the payments each months are jack zilch.

For those who want to avoid "gothchas", what do you get with Time Warner (besides internet access) that you don't get with DirectTV? Apparently there are some people who have both.

Time Warner

DirectTV

I still have basic cable and dial up service.

I think next year I'll join the real world.

My family is thinking of switching to DirecTV from Time Warner.

We have digital cable along with HDTV and Road Runner and pay about $115/month.

We basically want the local channels, movie channels and sports, on-demand stuff if they offer it and HDTV for at least two rooms, maybe three.

Think we can do better than TWC? Who should we shop at or are there certain things to look for? Also, Mouse, we might be willing to take that box off your hands if it works with our service.
