You would have to get some insight from someone who has been visiting the Spurs' Practice Facility. You could e-mail Johnny Ludden, the Spurs' beat writer. He has responded to our inquiries over the years.

Don't count on much playing time this year. The Spurs don't need him this year, and he isn't close to being ready to contribute. See - Oberto 2005.

They should pin this single post at the top with the subject "James White update".

Hello,
Is there any updates on the progress of James White or when we can expect some action from him? I believe the Spurs could use his athleticism tonight against the Mavericks especially on Josh Howard, Jason Terry, or Devin Harris.

Revolving door: The Spurs' inactive list isn't a list as much as a revolving door. Jackie Butler was in uniform for the first time this season one game after Eric Williams made his first appearance. Popovich said he will continue to rotate Butler, Williams and Jacque Vaughn on a game-by-game basis.
"I've made it simple, so even I can understand it," Popovich said. "They're just going to alternate.
"I'm just trying to show them a little light at the end of the tunnel, so the same guys aren't sitting there every night. None of them are playing, so why not let someone get in a uniform? So if there's some garbage time or if somebody does get hurt or for some reason if a guy gets in, maybe he shows something."
Rookie guard James White, Popovich said, won't be in the rotation.
"He's too young," Popovich said, laughing. "He deserves no respect whatsoever."

Tonight I think would be a good night to activate White for his first NBA game. Manu,Williams, and Butler should be inactive for tonight. Warriors usually play "small-ball" style with murphy occasionaly at center. Hopefully Davis will be out again and the spurs can get an early lead and coast the rest of the game.

As many in here have said before, it will be a bad thing if White see's the court anytime soon. He's a project, and thats that. Don't expect to see him have any type of major floor time this year barring some huge (and probably bad) suprises.

is it possible that white could be the ace up pop's sleeve come playoff time, when all other teams and players are tired and weary from a long 82 game season? Might not be a bad thing to have a super athletic, super rested shooting guard off the bench to surprise everyone
Even though he doesn't get any playing time in San Antonion....does that mean he can still join the NBA dunk contest and show people wassup????? :fro :downspin:

Pop sounds like he has him on the Stephen Jackson plan. My guess is that we won't know about White's progress until next season. Just because he is not playing does not mean he isn't making progress. We just won't know what progress he has made until he does play.

Express News lists Butler as the active player and Williams inactive. Who's right, you or the paper? Does either have an inside source, or are they both guesses?

I've been busy and haven't been able to watch the Spurs game's as much as I would like to...
Has he played at all? I read he's been travelling with the team. But has Pop put him in for garbage time? Has he shown flashes of anything yet? I'd love to see that sick athleticism come to fruition with the Spurs.

White needs a lot of work.
More precisely on his ball handling and jump shot.
He prides himself on defense, and will more than likely attempt to get playing time and stay with the team in that sense rather than solely on his freak athleticism.
He will still be in the Dunk Contest right????

Defense, an amazing work ethic, and a good 3-ball kept Bruce in the league a lot longer than some people expected.
I'm hopeful about this guy...I hope he eventually becomes a piece of the Spurs continued success.
Do you think the League knows about this guy like we do??? Hopefully they do invite him because its going to be a sick @ss all star weekend for da spurs when he wins the dunk contest.... :clap :clap :clap

His situation is very similar to what Stephen Jackson's situation was when he first came here. Like Jax did during his first year here he won't play but will learn the system and work to improve his game with the coaching staff. We really won't know how good he can be until next year. Then we will no for sure if this guy has potential.

The slight difference is that SJax played the season before in New Jersey and got some playing time and was able to show his strengths and weaknesses. I have no idea what White can and can't do at this point. But if he was already a stud its safe to say he'd be in the games. That's obviously not the case but the question is how raw he is at this point. Until, he plays its hard to say.

I would imagine White is busting his ass off in practice by hustling, rebounding, and playing defense.
Popovich knows what White can do when it comes to dunking and other freak abilties.
He wants to see White display other characteristics that will allow him to stay on the team, and apparently White is doing that.
We might not see White for a while mainly due to the fact that he is learning on the fly, and was not around during training camp.
The Spurs playbook is difficult enough to pick up on the offensive end, and extremely tough on the defensive end.....thats speaking of established NBA players, let alone Rookies who have not been with their current team during training camp.
Teams do know of White...they scouted him in the McDonalds All-American game, in Cincy, and of course during NBA workouts.
Once again, his poor season at Cincy, his lack of fundamentals, and inconsistent jump shot is what made him a second round pick and not a first rounder.

White was projected to be a lottery pick a few years ago in the same draft as LeBron, Wade and Melo...it's well known that he can dunk by all.

He was projected a lot of places in the late first round but, like many players, dropped. First pick of the second ain't bad, plus Indy dumped three overall second round picks to get him. I think a lot of people expected him to be visible this year, but he's disappeared behind the curtain with the Spurs. That's just as well.

Why is everybody all up on his nuts anyways? He has proven nothing in the NBA. And before that he was a great dunker and that is about the extent of it. Sorry to dissapoint, but he is work in project and may not even find a spot here at all. He is more of an insurance policy than anything else.

Let's review.
White got beat out by Rawle Marshall in Indiana.
Marshall has averaged 8mpg and 5 DNPs.
Indiana is barely a .500 team.
In the east.
Eric Williams has played well even while fat.
James White probably won't play this season barring injury or a runaway regular season record differential between us and our competitors. If you wonder whether the Spurs think he is worth keeping, check back in January when his contract will become guaranteed if he is still on the roster.
Please remember this and quit asking the same damn question every week.
