Near the palace lived a young peasant woman and her husband. Sadly, the husband did, and the woman was reduced to begging. The king saw her day after day and took pity on her.

One day, he had the widow led into his court to appear before him. She was bathed and dressed in the finest linen. He told her, "Young widow, pick any of these young noblemen, and they will ask for your hand in marriage."

Each of the noblemen was young, handsome, strong, and had great wealth, including his own manor. The woman looked at each one. Finally, she said, "I would like the hunchback who works in the dungeon to be my husband."

The king was stunned. "Widow," he asked, "why would you want to marry such a man, who can offer you nothing and leave you in poverty, when any of these noblemen will gladly wed you?"

"Your highness," she explained, "I used to work for the Houston Texans."
